US-127 in Ohio

From Carl Reitz quote:RT 127 is a great road with lots of interesting places along the way to Greenville. Anything of interest on US-127 from Eaton south to OH-73 or so? I visit southwestern Ohio (Dayton/Lebanon) every August and if I'm coming in on I-70 instead of I-74 I usually take US-35 to Eaton and then OH-122 southeast from there, although if I have the time I don't mind a little bit of a detour. Brad, I wish I could help you with your question. I haven't live in the area for 13 years. IMO though Rt 127 is a wonderful road. Just north of Hamilton, just north of Seven Mile, is Darrtown where Walter "Smoky" Alston, former mgr of the LA Dodgers used to live. Take Rt 73 over to Oxford and Miami Univ (motto "Miami was a University when Florida belonged to Spain"). I wish you were going north of Eaton. Actually, where RT 35 and Rt 127 intersect in Eaton, go abouit 2 blocks north on 127, there is a wonderful Amish-type restaurant on the left, I cannot remember it's name. North of Eaton beyond Greenville, on RT 49 is Fort Recovery, site of one of the worst defeats by a US Army to the Indians. Little towns of Maria Stein and Carthagena where many relics of saints are kept. It's also wonderful farm country, cattle, hogs, cron soy beans and wheat. I'd love to live in that area.

Actually this is quite helpful, as I/we (sometimes it's a convoy) generally hit Eaton around the 11a-1p timeframe and it sounds like the Amish place might be a good choice for lunch. I suppose that we could detour north to US-36 somewhere in Indiana and then come into Ohio right at Greenville and then take US-127 south, too. And then on the way home I could take OH-73 west of US-127, go through Oxford, and jog up US-27 to Richmond if I have the time (gotta cover 500 miles in 1 day after 3 days of partying). Thanks for the insight! Every year it's a catch-22. I love getting off the interstate and finding the 2-lane state and county highways (the DeLorme gazetteers are invaluable) but at the same time I hate giving up travelling at 75 MPH... Brad

Brad, where are you coming from and why do you visit in August? How long do you stay in the area?

I'll be coming from southcentral WI; I live roughly halfway between Madison and Janesville. The usual route is I-90 to I-39 to I-74 to Indy, where I decide to either take I-70 east or continue on I-74 to the southeast (this choice is usually dictated by construction), eventually ending up in Lebanon OH through some combination of interstate, US, and state highways. The Trans Am Nationals (car show) are held the last weekend of August in Dayton and I usually arrive midday that Thursday and depart Sunday morning. I'd love to make it a longer trip but because of family vacations and an annual trip to Iowa at the end of April I just don't have the time. Brad

Thanks for the insight! Brad_Olson, if you're ever in Greenville, stop at Vint's Family Restaurant on Sweitzer/OH 49, just south of the Darke County Fairgrounds and on the same side of the street (west). To get there from US 36, take it east to US 127, then go north and exit at the first exit/OH 49 for Greenville and Arcanum (follow the Greenville signs) and head north toward Greenville, and it will be on the left with a green sign with yellow letters. Oh, and if you're in the mood for pizza, there are two parlors I have tried in Arcanum (southeast of Greenville on OH 49)--Pizza N Cream (I think that's the name) at the intersection of South and Main Streets (where ALT OH 49 turns--one of only a handful of bannered state routes in the Buckeye state) just east of the big red city building and Picnic Pizza just south of Sutton's SuperValu on North Main St./ALT OH 49 on the northern fringes of town.

Thanks for the suggestions! Hopefully I'll get a chance to use at least one of them. Yes, it's a long drive for a short vacation but it's a chance to get together with friends from all over the Midwest and Canada. We have a pretty good cookout on Friday night... Brad

That makes it all worthwhile. I get together once a year with all my old college buddies (this past Thanksgiving was 30th anniversary) in SW Ohio either in Cincinnati or at Miami U in Oxford Oh, actually at Hueston Woods state park. It's good for the soul and people now come from Hawaii, Calif, VA, Cleveland, and me from TN. Hope you'll take the detour and check out the Maid Rite. It' will become part of your tradition, Brad.

Brad, if you wanted the full effect of Rt 127, you could drive across northern IN & OH and get on the highway around West Unity and simply head south. This would be a heckuva roadtrip.

True, but that would put me too close to the Chicago area for driving comfort if I were to take I-80/90. I could see the possibility of taking US-24 and US-224 across Indiana and picking up US-127 outside of Van Wert, but US-24 across eastern Illinois is one of those drives that seems to take twice as long as it actually does as it goes through some serious flatland! That would be more likely for the return trip home, too, as my friends from Indy and Muncie probably wouldn't be too thrilled about heading north only to head south again. But as always, it's something to keep in mind. Brad
