Unbelievable - another Dunkin Donuts

very soon, we will have another new Dunkin Donuts in Latham...that will make 5 DD's (could be 6 if the one in the Mobil Station stays open 3 doors down from the one being built)within less than a 5 mile radius.... In Latham, NY, there will be 3 (or 4) all on Rte 9 and 2 more on Rte 7 in Niskayuna....give me a break!!!

From my visits to the New England area, thats about right for the average DD penetration in the NE area (6 on a corner :-) and it's getting close to what I remember as the number of neighborhood bars on a Wisconsin street corner. (My college roommates parents owned a neighborhood bar in Manitowoc)

Apparently there are no territorial limits included in the franchise package. A poor business practice on the receiving end, but the more the merrier to the title corporation.

I read where Dunkin was ramping up their locations by the thousands in 2007-2008. That must the rationale. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

Probably the territory is owned by the same family...

I have three in my neighborhood by the Seaport in NYC. Not a huge fan of the dinuts at all, but Ilove their muffins for some reason. Now they've expanded into hash brown, sandwiches and personal pizzas. That's usually the "jump the shark" moment for most businesses. They just need to get Ted McGinley as their spokesman and they'll be good to go.

Jeepguy, I would hope that to be the situation (a family owning multiple stores) but I am aware of several times when (in the Subway chain) there was a one mile circle around a new store "promised" and shortly after another franchise was sold within the original limit...In fact within sight of the first store. There was no connection between the two store franchise buyers. This was the subject of a legal action that was part of a "48 hours" segment some time ago. I would hope that is a rare occurence, but once would be enough to cause someone serious business problems.

Dunkin Donuts sells franchises, not donuts. They even got the following domain name for their franchising pitch: http://www.dunkinfranchising.com I am looking around the 'net to see if there are any message boards or similar sites run by and for DD franchisees. I, for one, want to know how much money these franchisees are making.

No Dunkin Donuts here (we used to have one years ago, but someone ran their card through it and they never opened back up (a good sign?). We have one Krispy Kreme (thank God!) and it does a booming business; especially when the "Hot Now" sign is on. When they are piping hot they actually melt in you mouth.

Observers in Southeastern New England, home of DD, can tell you that when confronted with two DDs on the same street or intersection the true Dunkin junkie ("Dunkie") will swerve to the one requiring passage through as many lanes of oncoming traffic as possible, letting nothing get in their way. Dunkin isn't in the business of selling franchises. They are the vanguard of a nefarious plot to bring the streets of the nations's cities to a standstill. "Time to make the doughnuts, mwah-hah-hah-ha!"

Marlborough, MA> They must take the cake for the amount of shops in the smallest town. I will research it and let you know. I think they have 5 or 6 in town, that is only about 10 miles in diamter. Maybe not. I will get back to you.

It is interesting how about ten years ago it looked like KK would just overwhelm DD in Maryland. It looked as if DD would eventually fade away. Oh how times have changed.

Boston Post Road West....three within about a mile Downtown - one 85 toward Southboro - one 20 West before 495 - one 20 West after 495 - one (in gas station) That's seven...of course there is a Honey Dew and an independent too Actually I would bet that either Quincy or Medford would win in terms of numbers

Reminds me of the Louis Black stand-up routine where he announces he's been to the end of the earth. I believe it was in Houston where there is a Starbucks directly across the street.... "FROM A STARBUCKS!!!!" He later opines this would only be useful to alzheimers patients..."hey I could use a coffee...you?" I love the DD they put-up in Cortland NY (no..not really)...its at a triangle intersection where the two ends face each a prominant street...on the east end is the fugly outdoor cooler scabbed on the side of the building...why was that a good idea?

Another one opened up in our area last week, a mile away from another on the same street. Here, all of the units within a ten mile radius are owned by one family and every new opening brings a few more family members across the ocean to work in them. They bake the donuts and other products for all their stores in one central location, rather than on-site so their stores are less square footage (=lower rent) than they would be for an individual franchise.
