Uncle Bear's - Come, Sit, Stay - Phoenix

Whenever I'm out in East Mesa around lunchtime, I make a point to stop into Uncle Bear's Bar and Grill. It has an interesting theme, being named after the owner's dog, but the food is more than fit for human consumption.

The interior is done up with kennel panels and wood, but is very clean and inviting, with a large bar area and plenty of TVs to watch the big game.

Bring in a picture of your pooch, and they'll frame it and put it up on the wall with the hundreds of other happy hound pics.

While you are waiting for your food, enjoy some of the coldest beer in town and some peanuts served right out of a dog bowl. Order one of my favorite local brews, the 4 Peaks 8th Street Ale. Heaven in a glass. http://www.fourpeaks.com/

I have a hard time ordering anything but "Herd's Burger Style," I assume meaning that it is in the style of Herd's Hamburgers in northern Texas. I have tried to find more information on this quasi-famous Texas burger joint, but so far have come up empty.

The burger itself is a loosely compacted burger, the meat very coarsely ground. The flavor is outstanding, I get it with lettuce, tomato, pickle and mustard, then dip it in ketchup. I have to say it is one delicious sandwich. The fries are thick cut, and pretty good, although I think they should do potato wedges with this entree.

Here is the link to their website, it tells the story of the owner and restaurant through the eyes of the dog, an interesting tale, or should I say, "tail?" http://www.unclebearsbarandgrill.com/bs.html

That's a pretty good looking meal there. Although I must admit the dogbowl has a certain "eewww" factor for me.

    Desert Dog,
I like the peanuts served in the dog bowl, nice touch! All else looks good as well.
Anyone who cares enough to name their restaurant after their dog gets a few extra points with me!
Dean to Dean,"rouxdog" is in respect to my loyal, now departed, chocolate Labrador Retriever, Roux.

Most folks tend to "work" the meat too much when making burgers at home, less is best. Nice job DD, thanks.

DD I just took the time to look at their menu. It's much more extensive than I expected.

Herd's in Jacksboro, TX is worth the trip. The "Herd's Style" burgers pictured look a lot like the real thing. Herd's doesn't serve fries though, just chips. Most just order a second burger and a third to take home. Dr. Kent Bowman of Denton and Ryan High Schools taught all his students about Herd's famous hamburgers. Those who made the 2 hour trip were not disappointed and often returned the next weekend. Hope you make it out there!
