sorry i'm brand new to this site, so I don't know who you are talking about. As much as I eat, I should have found this site a long time ago. I'm actually travelling from Augusta to Union, so anything along the way would be great.

        Supra,
Welcome to Roadfood. One suggestion I would make in your search for help in the S C area is to do a "Search" of the message boards. That should give you a lot of notes to start with.
Let us know if you need more info.

I did a search before I posted, but alas Union South Carolina didn't come up even once. I'll try a couple of the surrounding towns. I just thought I would see if anyone knew of anything. Thanks for welcoming me. It's always good to be around food lovers.

Back in the '80's, I had a college boyfriend from Union. He took me to Hearts- an old from the '50's drive-in burger place. If I remember correctly, at that time they still had carhop service. The food was good and the place was full of local people. Haven't been back in several years but as far as I know they are still in business. I have heard that Midway BBQ is good but I've never been there, maybe someone will know about it.

                suprawynn,

Hey. David Smith is Susan Smith's ex-husband. We are so famous here in SC for so many things, lol! I don't know about Union, sorry. If you come towards Charleston let me know.

Funny. I drove through Union yesterday around lunchtime. Cruised all the uptown streets and saw nary a single restaurant!

Well, wait. There was a Bantam Chef near downtown ... There are chain places out on the bypass.

I drove out highway 49 to Lockhart. Old mill town on the Broad River. There was a sign "Lockhart Cafe (next to Post Office)" but try as I might I could find neither.

Good luck to you in your new home.

Thanks for the help. I'm planning on running into Spartanburg to try the Beacon Drive In. I'll probably try the 50's drive in also. Luckily I'll only be making business trips to Union. Maybe somebody knows some good places in Augusta Georgia?

                      HUNT,
YOU DIDN'T LOOK IN THE RIGHT PLACE! THERE USED TO BE 2 OR 3 UP ON THE NORTH SIDE OF DOWNTOWN. THERE'S PROBABLY SOME MORE ON THE SOUTHWARD SIDE AS WELL. NEXT TIME YOU'RE THERE, ASK THE POLICE... THEY MIGHT EVEN ESCORT YOU TO A GOOD PLACE YOU'D NEVER FIND OTHERWISE... THE TOWN'S TOO BIG NOT TO HAVE SOMETHING.

GETTING LOST IN LOCKHART IS NIGH ONTO IMPOSSIBLE. THE CAFE NEXT TO THE POST OFFICE IS WELL WORTH CONSIDERATION: IT'S OFF ON THE OLD HIGHWAY, A COUPLE BLOCKS OVER. THAT'S ABOUT ALL OF TOWN THERE IS.

Good luck to you in your new home.

YOUR POSTING WAS ENJOYABLE. I HAVEN'T BEEN TO UNION SINCE I STAYED THERE IN THE OLD FAIRFOREST HOTEL, 15 OR 20 YEARS AGO. BY THE WAY, I'M NOT SHOUTING AT YOU... I'M USING CAPS TO DIFFERENTIATE.

                        suprawynn,
Yes! Williams' Restaurant on 12th. Street is decent, and there's another meat-and-three of similar mien across the street. That's right about where Fenwick crosses, if I remember right. Unless the entire area has been bulldozed or something.
Out in the valley, along old U. S. 1, you'll find mom-and-pop eateries in almost every village. That area HASN'T been bulldozed!
Not far from Augusta over in S. C. is New Ellenton BBQ, an all-you-can-eat place. I'm unsure of days they're open, but I think they're open through the week.
There used to be a diner on Walton Way not far from the Medical College. I don't know whether it's still there or not.
Town Tavern downtown is more of an upscale place, but they have a good lunch menu.
A local chain called Wife Saver will definitely do in a pinch. There's one right kitty-cornered from the Medical College on I think it's 15th. Street.
Now we await Augustan posters. People, surface and introduce yourselves!
