Unlimited budget Tailgate party Mon, 01/17/11 5:06 PM (permalink)
This topic must have been touched on before, but I'm too lazy to check and don't remember one if it was...so, lets hear your menu, I'll start it with 2 items first, Mimosas with real OJ and Moet Chandon Extra Dry, and Stoli Bloody Mary's with killer juice! Then we need 10 pounds of crispy Broadbent bacon, sitting around for munching with cheese bisquits. Need some marinated tenderloins and marinated lamb kebobs for the grill. we will need about 10 lbs of 10-15 to a lb. devained and steamed Shrimp in beer and Old Bay, and a 3 lb lobster for everyone. On the smoker we started the huge meaty Beef ribs early, and got the brisket chili simmering. Getting ready to put on the Tri Tips alongside the 3 and down Baby Backs on the BBQ and don't forget the Peanut oil for the deep fried Turkey that will hang in there with the spicy crisp fried chicken. we got 10 cases of Harp on Ice along with 10 Fosters. Can't forget the sidesThe 5 cheese Mac, collards, and corn bread, which is as good as the garlic cheese toast, make sure we have plenty of thin sliced potatoes for hpmemade seasoned chips, which are a compliment to the sizzling garlic sausages. Forget desert.
Any suggestions?

I do not know that I would want to add to that selection.  Sounded really good to me.  Are we all invited?

REAL Tailgators don't drink Champagne! Replace Moet Chandon Extra Dry with Grey Goose for Screwdrivers! And Baileys Irish Cream and Coffee for the morning games.
      Everything else looks OK.

Even if I had an unlimited budget, I woudl still want beer.  And I don't mean fancy microbrew beer (which I like) I mean ice cold American mass produced crap.  To me that's what you drink at a tailgate.

You guys! You guys! I grew up with the original tailgating on the lacross fields outside the Yale Bowl. It was called tailgating because of the dropped tailgates on the station wagons. And the food was simple, came in picnic baskets and included such things as finger sandwiches, cheeses and fruit. The beverages were Martinis, still wines,  champagne and sodas. As far as I'm concerned anything other than that is not tailgating it is gorging and getting drunk.

Michael, that's when you hung out with the la-di-da gang at Yale.
My experience was at West Point...Vince Lombardi was assistant coach.  Girls had big yellow MUMS pinned to their School Blazers, plaid skirts, bobby sox and loafers.  Cadets went from wagon to wagon grubbing food---it was a thrill to get away from 3-square Army Chow.

The Ford wagon had wooden sides and the tail gate had deviled eggs,
and hero sandwichs (on real NY rolls), and antipasta salad and beer.
                    No finger sandwiches----yuck.
On Brave Old Army Team !!!!

Oh, I wasn't hanging out. I was selling souveniers, pennants, mums and programs. And I'd get over there after filling our driveway and back yard with cars at ten bucks a pop for all games other than Harvard and Princeton, when the price would go up to $20 early and $50 late.

And yes, women in camel coats (with mums) and heels, men in camel coats and ties -- proper dress for a college football game. Oh, and thanks for the reminder about the deviled eggs.

In this case, I don't think history will repeat itself, that said, I will add deviled eggs to the menu, I love them!

Then there are the pre=game and post-game parties on the boats that tie up at the University of Washington football games. But that's not tailgating.

I would love to attend your party, ctf. Sounds wonderful!! I have to agree with Mr.Hoffman-my parents met at a tailgate party in the 40s at Ann Arbor, and indeed there were smoked oysters, finger sandwiches, cocktail peanuts, and of course, martinis.I still have my Dads sterling silver college martini shaker!

It all sounds eastern effete and Great Gatbyish. I don't think they do it that way anymore. It is mostly a grill, a brat and a beer from what I have seen. A true station wagon with tailgate is history. SUV don't have tailgates. Pickup trucks still do. Team jerseys dominate.

They do that at Orangeneck University (Tennessee) too. It's Boatgating!

The DC., Md. and No. VA. area is one of the wealthiest in the nation, and some folks like to show it off.

I'll tell you what Davydd, there are some Redskin tailgaters that make my menu look like lite lunch, folks spend a fortune trying to outdo each other. The DC., Md. and No. VA. area is one of the wealthiest in the nation, and some folks like to show it off.

Several years ago, John Madden wrote a book called "Ultimate Tailgating" covering tailgaters at NFL games. A really fun read! Full of recipes too!
I especially liked the guys at the Steelers Games who had taken the engine out of an old car and turned the car into a grill. Wonder if Buffetbuster was involved?????

I say unlimited budget. Pay all expenses for CTF to cater your next party.

'09 my sister invited us up to Nashville for a game. there group always has someone cater the party. the responsibility rotates per game. just simple affairs and there is no parking  to any amount at the stadium. They take the grills away and all. Makes for simple get togethers. Well long story short, they invited us for this Dentist of the group always puts on these outragous affairs. They never know what he and the spouse are doing next.
Will have to get with my sister for the menu. It was a sitdown 8 course meal. She says he does this every year it is his turn.
All I want is a grilled Brat and a Cold one.

I suspect the type of sporting event has some effect on the style of the party, with baseball being the simplest, the NFL somewhere in the middle, and major college football the most grandiose.  Isn't there an SEC football game (I want to say Georgia-Florida but that might not be right) known as the "World's Largest Cocktail Party" or something like that?

If I had an unlimited budget the only thing I'd want would be a chauffeured private bus with a bathroom.  The food and drink would be unchanged.

                                                Screaming Chicken,
You are correct sir. The "Worlds Largest Cocktail Party" is held in The Gator Bowl in Jacksonville FL every year for the GA-FL Game------HOWEVER!!!!---- THE Politically Correct Administrations of both schools are trying to discredit the name and get it referred to as something more "Socially Acceptable". They claim it gives a bad impression of the drinking habits of their students and Alums. It seems that College Kids don't drink much anymore!

I am too drunk to remember what the new name is!
