From everything I've heard you should stop at Chubby's barbeque in Emmistburg, Maryland if you are planning on visiting Gettysburg. Check out the photos of food posted here by chewingthefat.

Chewing the Fat is a regular contributor and often posts pictures of his food.  It all looks spectacular and I think a visit to support a fellow poster is a good idea. I'm trying to work a visit into my summer plans.

As for the BRP we drove it a few years back. It's absolutely gorgeous however we found that it got a bit tedious after a while. We found about 4 hours was great. More than that we started to get tired and just wanted to hit the hotel. It may also be because we were all hot and sweaty after our stop at Grandfather Mt. It's worth stopping at.

You've said where you are going but not the routes you will take. I really hope you will accept the advice already given to avoid interstates if your objective is anything other than getting from point A to point B rapidly (and on I-95 even that can be frustrating).

If you are using smaller roads in the Piedmont (eastern foothills of the Appalachians) in Feb., you might well be thankful to have all-wheel drive and just about every US rental company would be delighted to provide a small SUV with all-wheel drive, often Ford Escape. If you aren't familiar with them, these are fairly basic but competent vehicles with lots of luggage/cargo room. I rented one for a trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming in the Rockies and it did fine.

What you might need to fear more than the frequent light (a couple of inches) snowfalls is the less common ice storm in which rain falls, then freezes on the ground (and tree limbs and everything else), building up to an inch of ice. You just shouldn't try to drive on it. It's not worth it.

If you do take interstates, one route from Washington DC to Lancaster Pa is I95 to 695 (Baltimore Beltway) to 83N.  G and M is not far from I95 off of 695 in Linthicum MD and it has excellent crabcakes, often written about on this board.

Not far off 83N (Shawan Road to York Road) is Andy Nelson BBQ.  Sometimes mixed reviews here, but I've always liked the pulled pork and brisket.

If you take Rt 30 from Lancaster to Gettysburg, there's Famous Hot Weiner in Hanover Pa.

A bit out of the way off of Rt 30 is Texas Hot Weiner Lunch in Hanover,  If you choose to go here, you can also vist the downtown location of Famous Hot Weiner and do a comparison taste test.

As has been posted, just south of Gettysburg on Rt 15 is Chubby's BBQ. You can't go wrong there.

          Hi everyone,

Wondered if i can get some advice.

I have been a watcher since at least 2006 on the forums and website as I have a fascination with american food and when visiting have sampled what I can.

Next spring I am organising a road trip for myself and 2 other friends to arrive in Washington DC and drive down to Atlanta (hopefully!) on a route first going a bit north to Amish country around lancaster - visit Gettysburg (we are followers of military history also!) - down the blue ridge mountain trail and then carry on to Atlanta - we could change and head east after mts though towards Richmond etc instead!!

Any thoughts of roadfood places to stop at - ideas of towns etc to stay in that have great roadfood places - and some good breakfast places in particular!!

I personally would love to try some real bbq - cannot get anything good in the UK - apart from a few "american" styled restuarants that try to do it although I cannot imagine it would be as good as the real thing.

          Thks for any help!!

          Paul

In Atlanta (my home town) Harold's bbq is the real deal! Don't be afraid, it's in a dicey looking area, but well worth a visit. The Silver Skillet is EXCELLENT if you are here for breakfast.

You didn't read his later comments. He's NOT going to Hotlanta.

Also you mentioned snow. Well it snowed pretty good in London not long ago and all over the States are having a pretty good winter.

Hello - not sure when you're getting into DC and driving to Lancaster, but one of my favorite actual vintage stainless steel diners is right off of 95 in Aberdeen MD, The New Ideal. I had a great crab cake sandwich there last year, and really love the authentic diner ambiance.

                The New Ideal Diner

Also, when you're in the Lancaster area, I recommend another vintage diner Jennie's in Ronks PA (slightly west of Lancaster, on Route 30). You will get lots of food for your money and can try some regional delicacies like hot bacon dressing on your salad. This is the first place I ever saw Scrapple being served- and while my husband is a fan of this pressed meat product, I am not - but "when in Rome"!

                Jennie’s Diner
                2575 Lincoln Hwy E

                (717) 397-2507

Finally in the Lancaster area - if you are curious to try a sample of shoofly pie but might not want a whole pie or slice, head to the Dutch Haven on Route 30 - I think it's right next to or close to Dienner's mentioned above. When you enter the Dutch Pantry - a wonderfully tacky gift shop from back in the day - shaped like a windmill (!!) - they will hand you a sample of this sweet pie with a fork, to tempt you into buying a whole pie. It's also a great place to pick up some kitschy souvenirs.

Since I'm a newbie to these boards I can't post links - but if you want to see some photos and read more details about these places you can check out my website RetroRoadmap.com.

Hope that helps and you have a wonderful trip to the US!!

By the way here is Dutch Haven's web site...I don't agree...it's NOT the best Shoo-fly pie...but it is good...and as stated above you get to sample it first....
