Utah roadfood update

For our small population, we've had some great attention from the roadfood folks. Here's an update: Layton (Doug & Emmy's) SHOULD BE IN THE ROADFOOD BOOKS! South on main street, in the old railroad depot. If it's full, Sill's Cafe is a decent overflow stop....both have essentially the same menu, but the food is better at Doug & Emmy's. The "dont miss" breakfast is "Dale's Breakfast, consisting of: a dinner-plate sized fried-bread Utah-style scone with REAL honey butter, your choice of breakfast meat, two (or three?) eggs, and "SOS over hash browns". D&E makes their SOS with spicy sausage, so it's very tasty on top of the crispy hash browns....not just the same old white gravy. Tip: the locals will order a "full order of SOS over hashbrowns and a scone", and have those served in the middle of the table with two forks. Yum! Layton (C&R Maddox) This take-out is related to the famous Brigham "Maddox" roadfood stop. Great pie, wonderful crispy chicken without skin, and even turkeyburgers! Homemade potatoes and gravy, good slaw, homemade rolls and corn pone (cornbread sticks) come with chicken take-out meals. Brigham (Idle Isle) Still wonderful, and they've now added the world's best bargain salad bar ($2.00 with your meal). The rolls are still homemade, the pot roast is still unbelievably tender, and (yum!) canned green beans are better than frozen. Mom's (Salina) We've tried this place twice, but don't "get it". The honey butter is VERY odd, with eggyolks in it. Good honey butter consists of honey and butter, not a bunch of cheap additions. The chicken was fine, the salad bar was OK, and the manager/owner sat at her desk and stared at us.

The honey butter at Mom's in Salina tasted good. Sometimes when I travel I avoid overanalyzing things, so I made a point to ignore the ingredients on the bottle and just try it on their... did they call it a scone? It was delicious. We enjoyed our entire meal and look forward to going back when we pass through there. No restaurant can satisfy everyone. We found good eats at Ancestor Square in St. George. The "Painted Pony" was overpriced for what we had, but the Chinese restaurant below it is delicious and a great value. We didn't try the other restaurants there because we kept smelling the good Chinese food. We did try both Nielson's and the Iceberg on St. George Boulevard. Neither had good "before dessert" food, but Nielsen's frozen custard was very good. These may be Utah-based chains. In Moab, I think it's called the Moab Brewery, we enjoyed pub food and their house-made root beer.
