Utica Food flurry Fri, 02/18/11 4:11 PM (permalink)
After reading on a couple places in/around Utica, I drove the boss out so she could go to class at Suny IT and get more ed-u-mo-cated and I used it to do a food trip flurry. Her class was from 6-9pm so I started ASAP. I figured I would do a pizza places -
First I started at O'scugnizzo, it smelled great inside, I asked if they sold slices but I guess they stop at 2pm with the slices. The prices were very reasonable so I ordered a small sausage pizza. It took 25 mins so I took off for the next spot.
Franco's pizza- it was good, I got a couple of cheese slices from the counter, Nice buttery tasting crust but overall I thought it was okay
Back to O'scugnizzo from my sausage, I opened the box up in the car and just stared, I was like great, a tomato pie with no sausage. I took a piece and saw that under the sauce was a DISK of sausage. It was awesome, nice crust, good sausage and nice sauce. It really surprised me.
Then on to Nico's-  it was leaking grease by the time I got it back to the car, I soldiered on and ate it and the grease was all over- my shirt, chin, seat, box, so I give that a big thumbs down.
After all the pizza I thought I change it up for some hotdogs at the patio drive inn, 2 thumbs up for the 2 dog special fries and soda, one with cheese and onions the other with kraut, onions and spicy mustard.
For dessert a stop by Holland bakery for some black and whites which never disappoint.
All in all it was a good food trip, I felt REALLY VERY full and got the normal head shake of disapproval and laughing from the boss when I picked her up after class.

Jack211, If you make it back to Utica in season, Voss' BBQ is not to be missed.  Thanks for the report.

Yeah I am hoping to hit Voss up when it's alittle warmer. She's going to Suny IT for at least 2 years for her masters, which gives me plenty of time to really tear up utica and the surrounding eats
What about Riggies? Where should I go to have some? I'll be eating alone so maybe a place with a bar would be good so I could kill some extra time
      Thanks

Was the pizza from Nico's also topped with sausage?  I don't mind a little bit of grease but it sounds like that one went a little too far.  How were the crust, sauce, and cheese?

The Nico's pizza was straight cheese. I'm with you, a little grease isn't bad, especially with a sausage but this was CRAZY, it might have been the greasiest pizza I've had. It was like a waterfall. The sauce and crust were nothing special, in my personal opinion it was nothing special and just a run of the mill pizza

Hi Jack!  Thanks for the report and welcome to Roadfood (a bit belatedly!).  Lots of good eats in the Utica area.
1.)  Voss' BBQ - one of my faves and only open Memorial day to Thanksgiving.  No phone but the hours are shown in the photo with the review here of RF.
2.)  I haven't had Riggies in Utica in quite some time so not sure which is the best.  However, there is a place called the Rte. 69 Steakhouse in Whitesboro and they won the Riggiefest competition a couple of years ago.  When last I knew, my cousin, Bob, was the chef there (in the interest of full disclosure).  I hope to try them there this summer and report back.
Here are a few threads from my trips to CNY over the last couple of years that you might find useful.  If you have any questions, please feel free to send me a PM!  Happy Eating!

I remember visiting some college friends in Utica, many years ago. I remember they wanted to take me out for "Speedy's" (you know what I really mean), but I was aghast since I thought they had turned into druggies!
