Phatphil, While Holly provides an invaluable service, one of my criticisms of his site is that he rarely mentions brand or content (pork? Beef?) of dog, let alone the size of the frank served. Steak places will say 18 oz. Angus beef Porterhouse, etc. I really believe dog places ought to, also. Why hide it? The Bear

Screenbear, I grew up in CT and I don't even like the Snort and Giggle or the other popular Muckees = Yuckees. This is just my opinion I'm sure I'll catch a lot of mustard for saying that, but we all have different tastes.

I know this may be sacrilege to some, but I think Targets snack bars have them. I know in the Super Targets they supposedely do Chicago Style Dogs, but even in our regular Target here they promote Viennna Beef dogs on their signs.

Yep I grew up in CT too and my folks loved those darned Grote and Weigles. Almost made me give up hot dogs. I hate them... I mean I'd rather have a salad then one of those things... and that is saying something. Living in Maine after for a few years got me curious again but the red hots didn't bring me back into the fold. It wasn't till I moved to Chicago that I remembered what a good dog was (from my days on the CT shore, not at home).

Stagger, Out of curiosity...is there another dog that you believe has a taste similar to Vienna Beef's? Reason I ask is that my jury's still out on that Chicago favorite. I won't say that I don't like it. I just can't pinpoint the taste. The Bear

Hey Yall! Here is a tip when in Las Vegas, a cart in front the sports book at the Gold Coast casino has Viennas for 99c. Only during the day, lots of toppings! No chili though. Joe

Jordans, Kritchners, and Kayem are different formulas from the same packing plant. The Kayem NC 'deli dog' is the pick of this lot. Bean's is an small local packer, but their red 'dogs contain too much non-meat/meat bi-product filler for my taste. Old Neighborhood 'dogs are the best red 'dog up here (IMO). We had Grote & Weigle 'dogs in the local supermarkets for a while, and I tried both types available; I wasn't impressed. FWIW, I think the best 'dog in Maine isn't a red 'dog, it's one of the grilled 'dogs served up at Bolly's in Holowell. Top

Well I've never found anything quite like a VB but I do typically get the shorter, thicker Nathan's at my local market (as opposed to the long skinny ones). The dog has more smoke than a VB but the spice level tastes right... or as close to right as I can find at Price Chopper. I'd be open to suggestions though if any of you have a better suppliment to A vienna. As for Red hots I do know that, as with all things, there is great variation from one to another and I *do* like them but it wasn't the eye opening expierence that I had in Chi-town. Then again I suppose I should take a ride to Bates (my old College) and cruise up to Holowell and try a Maine dog again now that my dog love has been rekindled.
