Valentine's day Wed, 02/11/09 12:29 PM (permalink)
Hi what are you all doing for Valentine's Day.  We usually stay in and cook something but this year I am stumped and don't know what to make.  I would love to hear from you.

My wife makes me swear not to bring 'Sweets' into the house for Valentine's Day. I used to get a nice box of See's Chocolates..One for my Mom and one for Janet. Mother would establish a strict ration of one or two pieces a day from hers, making it last a month or more. Janet would fight getting into hers for several days after the holiday..Then it would simply disappear in a day or so. She has no will-power at all when she tastes candy or ice cream !!!(and I am certainly a poor teacher in this behavior!)

As far as MENU for THIS particular Valentines Day, We will be meeting with some of our Roadfood Friends in Memphis and will be doing a couple of fine BBQ meals with some Blues Music and Bar Food inbetween the major Stops.

For us Valentines Day centers on a Dinner out somewhere...not an easy task in this day of overcrowded selections.

In 30 years we have never made a big to do over Valentines, so just a dinner at home. This year we bought some fine lobster tails, something we haven't done in years.

If my boyfriend is here we're going out for dinner and then having a night at home.  However, he's planning on moving to Louisiana (he was supposed to have left a month ago), so if he's not here odds are pretty good I'll be curled up on the couch miserable instead.

We're going to a Doowop concert at our local high school, sponsored by the football boosters club.  We're going out with some friends to a local pub for burgers afterwards so no cooking involved.

Last year, we partook of one of the many Sweetheat Dinners done on Valentine's Day as fundraisers for churches, fire companies, etc. in our area.  It was delicious and we didn't have to fight the crowds in restaurants.  They're usually takeout only and you have to order in advance.   These dinners have really become popular in the last few years around here.

The church on our road is having one and menu for this year follows.  The food is partially made by the church and partially catered by Wegmans.

Choice of one in each group:

              Asian pear salad
              Shrimp cocktail
              Chicken corn soup

Flounder wraps with spinach stuffing, wild rice, broiled tomato
Pot roast, sweet potatoes, green beans amondine
Chicken cordon bleu, scalloped potatoes, pepper cabbage

              Cherry cheesecake
              Chocolate mousse
              Apple-cranberry crisp

I'm wondering how many restaurants that're normally closed on Monday are making an exception this year.

One of our favorites is Liliana's in Fitchburg and they're offering a special menu but we've decided to visit The Continental, which is just down the road (and for which we just happen to have a gift certificate).  After 22 years together I think I can get away with ordering the fettuccine with white clam sauce even though it's loaded with garlic.

Is the Super Bowl Party over yet?

Cool menu, especially the wine list.  Wine prices are on the steep side, running 2 1/2 times retail.  But if you buy $100 in gift certificates, you get $100 free.  That makes the mark-ups more palatable.  At half price, I would drink every bottle of this wine that they have...'97 Voerzio Barolo - La Serra, Italy $175 Not necessarily in one night though

                  Don't forget the garlic bread!

In our house, it all depends on how good someone's memory is whether we're going to have a great Valentine's day or not. Otherwise no plans.

Holy Crap Brad(ScreamingChicken),  Stay away from Liliana's.

The cost is $50 per person, and it includes a gift certificate for three dance lessons for each of you at Arthur Murray Dance Studio.

No good could possibly come from this.  It could end up as a Valentine's Day Massacre.  I could see it now.

Mrs SC - Oh how nice, we could take dance lessons.

MR SC - I ain't takin no stinkin dance lessons

My wife and I go "out to eat" at least 50 or 60 times a year. In 29 years of Marriage, Valentine's Day has never been one of them.

Often our Valentine's meal is Chinese Take Out. If it's a nice day I'll buy steaks and cook them on the grill. In any event, the Valentine's tradition is, she doesn't have to cook and I figure out an alternatve.

We watched the TV show "Modern Family" family last night and laughed at the scene where Phil and Claire were the youngest people in the restaurant at 6:30pm on Valentine's Day, because we'll probably be eating about 5.  That's out of practicality and not age.

I recommend making reservations for a romantic Valentines Day candlelight dinner at White Castle. But it should be done quickly, before all the seating is taken for this annual event.

If the place is booked, plan B should be a romantic trip to a McDonalds for a Chipotle BBQ Angus burger, there will be no waiting!

I shouldn't have mentioned the Valentines Day dinners at White Castle. I ended up having to go get half a dozen Castles with mustard and no pickles.

This year I'm doing nothing special.  Probably go out with friends and avoid happy couples.

If you really want to avoid happy couples drive down here and I'll treat you to a burger at the Gahanna Grill. I don't think there's ever anyone who's happy at the Grill. You'll have to pay for your own beer.

I will most likely have to work that night, so we wont do or eat anything special. My birthday is five days later, so we will celebrate both with a steak dinner at our favorite supper club- The 5 O'Clock club near downtown Milwaukee.

Ann, my birthday is 2/16.  I will celebrate that event along with Valentine's day with my Glee Club friends in Raleigh, NC on 2/18 thru 2/20.  No doubt we will overeat and perhaps over imbibe.

Paul-lots of great people born in February! I am especially sad that I cannot travel to the Glee Club meeting this year as I love Raleigh. We get down there every couple of years, and I just love the feel of the town.Enjoy your combined celebration!
