Very Good Chicken Thu, 04/30/09 8:31 PM (permalink)

Back in the nineties there was a place called Kenny Rogers Roasters that went in at one of the malls in Springfield. They had the best chicken I had ever tasted at a fast food restaurant, heck any restaurant. Their side dishes were awesome. This place was backed up into the parking lot every day it was open during lunch and dinner. This went on for several years while it was open. Because of their popularity I was very surprised they went under. I have never seen a place so busy in all of my life. Their roasted chicken was almost as good as home cooked and their side dish of red potatoes was finger licking good. I wonder if that has been used enough? I wonder what happened to their recipes because they were worth having. Those little red taters were one of my favorites and they also had some kind of veggie I normally would have passed over but theirs was great. I believe it was some kind of spinach dish and I hated that green grass crap until I tasted theirs. Oh well, I wonder what they put in it to make someone like me actually eat the stuff and think it was good? I read that a hotdog place purchased the chain when it was in bankruptcy. In any case, their food was worth an honorable mention even if they are gone.

I guess they're not really gone.  Two interesting points:  (1) KRR was another venture by John Y. Brown that couldn't sustain its U.S. market, and (2) it was bought by Nathans.

At one of our local malls, in the food court, is a Nathan's/Kenny Rogers. I haven't tried it. I'm afraid it just won't be nearly as good a what I remember from years ago. Another mall has a Nathan's/Arthur Treachers. When I first had Arthur Treacher's 30 years ago it was good. I tried it recently from the Nathan's in the mall and was very disappointed.  Does Nathan's own any other defunct chains from the 90's?

This topic reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer goes ga-ga over Kenny Roger's roasted chicken.

According to wikipedia.com, there is only one official Kenny Rogers Roasters (with the legendary rotisserie chicken)
I've been to that location, and it's in the Ontario Mills Mall, about an hour east of L.A.

It's in one of those huge "Mills" malls...think Sawgrass Mills, franklin mills....

all the other roasters in the U.S are combined with Arthur Treachers or the like, and do not have full menus..
          (no rotisserie chicken, boo hoo)

For some reason, there are still tons of them in the Phillipines...

Don't know about the roasters but back in the stone age when Kenny first popped up it was fried chicken---pretty good---- but if memory serves they had the most wonderous buttermilk biscuits----heavy sighs. moans-------------

"No Jerry! I need that chicken, I gotta have that chicken, you leave
those roasters alone, Kenny never hurt anybody".

For fast food chicken, I eat Famous Recipe quite often.  But I really like Popeye's spicy chicken (when I can get it - there are none around where I live).
