The $2 deal at Target is a good deal, but I think that I have a better one. I have recently been making business trips that take me out past Hot Dog Annies on Rt 56 in Leicester, Mass on a regular basis. On Wednesdays, they do 4 dogs for $4, instead of the usual $1.20 each. Annies is a true hot dog joint that is 56 years old this year.

I used to stop in there when we lived in MA. They have pretty good food.

Thank goodness I live in Chicago and don't have to deal with this on aNational level.I don't live far from the factory/outlet store on north Damen ave.and can get what I need. By the way I think the Vienna Big Beefs are the Best.

P.S. if you really want a discussion-Try to get Midwest Potatoe Chips (Jays) on the West Coast . Impossible! I had to order from the factory direct to get Red Hots.

As I understand it, from what I pick up when I go to the Vienna Factory store to pick up my hot dogs from the deli and eat lunch, is that the Hot Dog going to Target is specially made/formulated/created for the roller grill and Target.

I have tried them, and while they are of the same calibur of the great Vienna products, they are not the "Official" Traditional Chicago Hot Dog like the Natural Casing hot dogs are. Man, just typing this is making me hungry. In comparison to other hot dogs off the roller grill, the Vienna dog at Target was almost, dare I say, orgasmic.

As for some of you speaking of opening hot dog stands, it is my understanding from a friend of mine who has an official hot dog stand in chicago, that you can call up Vienna and talk to, it's either sales or marketing, and they will hook you up with just about everything you need. He got a book about opening a stand and signs and a sales guy and a customer service rep. He loves his Vienna. It is one of the few companies around that is willing to help out the people on the street selling their products.

Finally had the Target deal with the Vienna dog. My Target has had the "deal" for some time but it was not Vienna dogs. IMO it is a good deal on a good dog, but in my local area, there are 4 places that I prefer, even if they cost more. In no particular order.... Georges Coney Island in Worcester www.hollyeats.com/GeorgesConeyIsland.htm , The Hot Dog guy by the old church in W. Boylston, Hot Dog Annies in Leicester www.thepulsemag.com/Dining/hotdogs.html , (Annies comments are mixed in withother good stuff) and the hot dog cart in the parking lot at Ray's True Value Hardware in Millbury. All are in Massachusetts.

i live near a target in royal palm bch florida and if you think eating a vienna hot dog off of rollers sitting next to 3 other brands all day is good save your trip, its like walking in to a hot dog stand and asking for ketchup and mayo on your dog, just something you dont do.

Vienna hot dogs are finally in my Super Target in Houston. They come 6 to a pack and were a nice treat. No natural casings, though.

All Vienna Beef retail products are skinless. Natural casing products are for food service(restaurants & hot dog stands). However, they can be purchased at the factory store in Chicago.

With that, I admit I don't understand the whole Target roll out. I agree the food court thing with the roller grill is a joke. To quote Vienna Beef rep:

"YES, we made a special product for Target, one that is the exact same quality but can hold up on a roller grill. In return they took our small family owned privately held company national for the first time in 112 years."

But, WHY are natural casing Vienna's available to only food service vendors??? This makes no sense to me. Someone please explain. Why would VB market their skinless hot dogs to the public and not the natural casing variety???

sugarlander, after seeing your post, I checked out a local Super Target. (I live north of Austin.) First time I'd ever been in one, and it was an interesting experience. However, I DID find what I was looking for; an 8-pack of Vienna Beef Wieners !!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the tip; you've made me and a couple of my Chicago friends very happy.

I just bought some jumbo viennas from the target near me for about 2.30 for 6 jumbos. I boiled/steamed them, put them on poppyseed buns and they tasted great, but not the natural casing.

Just came back from the local Target in Montgomeryville, PA where they had a 6pack/12oz for $2.29. Unfortunately, the expiration date was 12/13/05 so I didn't buy any. I'll try again.

In light of my experience at the Montgomeryville, PA Target as referenced above, I decided to try another Target nearby in Warrington, PA on Rt. 611. Same result. Same expiration date.

Hi Paul,

I just returned from a week's vacation in Vilas County Wisconsin(the real northwoods with no computer). I was in the process of editing that post and must have deleted it, so here it is again: All Vienna retail products are skinless. To purchase a natural casing Vienna Beef product, visit the Vienna Factory Store in Chicago. Natural casing hot dogs cost more to produce. Retail natural casings are more expensive. Boar's Head, Nathan's, and Usinger's are three natural casings sold in the Chicagoland area. They're also the most expensive(Boar's Head leads the group). Natural casing dogs in my area are a hard sell. They sit on the shelves, become out dated, and then discontinued. As a consumer, if I want a natural casing Vienna Beef hot dog, there are over 1400 hot dog stands.

Not up here in Maine!
My dinky local Hanaford in Skowhegan offers Jordan's, Kayem's, Beans's, and Old Neighborhood NC 'dogs in both colors year round, and they may not fly off the shelf but are steady sellers. Must be that Saturday night suppah.....

Is the deal still going on? My local Target still sells dogs, but I have not noticed the Vienna sign recently. BTW there was a nice short story in Gourment recently. It tells how Viennas are made, and what makes them so good.......Bull meat. No cows or steers need apply.

$2 for Vienna Beef dog and soda
$3 for Vienna Big dog and soda
as of two days ago at Escondido, CA Target

CSD: As they didn't have any 'Big' dogs at the time, we got the other. The sign didn't specify that Vienna Big dog is beef. Hubby and I got into the debate of whether or not VB does non-beef dogs? Didn't bother asking the snack bar staff as they could barely perform their jobs as it was. I figured you could settle it for us.
(I say, "Why would a company named "Vienna Beef" make non-beef dogs?")
Thanks!

All Vienna Beef hot dogs and Polish are 100% pure beef with the exception of one foodservice(commercial)foot long Maxwell Street Polish. It's unavailable to the public for retail sales. I know of no Chicago hot dog stand that serves them. The Target retail Vienna Beef hot dogs are not sold in the jumbo size.
