Vienna the wiener in Target dogfight Thu, 06/2/05 10:40 PM (permalink)
This was in today's Chicago Tribune:

"Vienna Beef hot dogs, a Chicago standard for more than 100 years, are going national in a distribution deal with Target Corp. Under the agreement, the food courts in 1,350 Target stores will begin selling Vienna's Chicago-style hot dog-complete with a steamed bun, mustard, relish, onion, tomato wedges, a kosher pickle spear, sport peppers, and a dash of celery salt. The giant discount chain also will stock the hot dogs in nearly 1000 stores that sell food and refrigerated items. The choice of what dog to sell in Target food courts came down to a battle between David and Goliaths: tiny Vienna vs Hebrew National and Best Kosher."

It says 1,350 Target stores, but would they be ones closer to Chicago, or maybe a little bit more out this way, like in Jersey? That would be nice! My boyfriend (from Chicago originally - way back) has been saying for years how great Chicago hot dogs are.

Sounds like a winner to me! But knowing our local Target, where the food court seems to be slow, they'll probably hack the dog and nuke it, vs. keeping it hot in a steam table..
(That and Costco being around the corner offering a dog and drink at near cost prices)..

If you have a Target in your area, you'll get Vienna.

Oh Well... I'm still out of luck. Nearest Target is over an hour's drive away. Nearest Super Target 3.5 hours away...

To bad you can't get same @ Sam's.

I was thinking that too. I'm looking forward to trying a Vienna dog an one of the local Targets here in NJ. But the food courts just look so sloppy and slow, I wonder if the "help" will bother to do things right.

I wonder if the Vienna Beef people realize they may risk their reputation by having so many new customers get thier first taste of the product not cooked properly and dressed all wrong at a Target food court. ---Ken

I remember when Nathan's of Coney Island fame went national .......... Being an "X" New Yorker and living in California I went flying to my local supermarket to grab a pack of them. To my disappointment the dogs were not the same, not even close to the real McCoy.
. Lets hope you folks that like Vienna will not be disappointed if the mass prodition of your favorite dog becomes just another Oscar Mayer hot dog ............. good luck

I hope not either... Vienna has always prided themselves on their quality... Hopefully the increased qty. wont change that...

Will we be listing Target Store's as Roadfood locations now? I miss Woolworths and their lunch counters sooooo much! Times they are a changing!

I called 2 Target stores in my area. One said that they do not carry Vienna Beef and that not all Target stores will, regardless of what the article said. The other location said that they will be getting Vienna Beef products. I'm looking forward to this. Even though the food court may not prepare them the right way, you have the option of buying the packaged product to prepare at home. I'm looking forward to buying a pack of these dogs to boil/steam and grill myself.

Here is my reply from Vienna Beef rep. concerning Target Stores:

"Actually I am in Woodstock, Georgia not Chicago and I run the food
service company on the east coast for Vienna Beef in Chicago. This means that I call on and service the big distributors (like Sysco, PFG, US Foods etc.) that sell to Hot Dog Shops, Country Clubs, Hotels etc, as well as call on and sell to chain restaurants. Selling to grocery stores in a very different business that I have nothing to do with, however if you live near a Super Target....Stay tuned, we should be on the shelves in all Super Target's by late May."

"Thanks for your interest in Vienna Beef."

I, too, called the nearest Target. They had NO idea what I was talking about... I am begining to think this is NOT a nationwide roll out with VB. What do you folks think?

If you folks look close your Target contacts are talking about SUPER TARGETS... there is a difference you know. A Super-Target is just like a normal Target, but with the addition of a grocery store. Not all Target stores are Super Targets

Yep. I know. I contacted the regular "Target" store near me. Not a Super Target, etc. The same did not know what I was talking about, i.e. food court, etc.

I really don't care. The nearest Super Target to me (that I would go to) is over 275+ miles away. The nearest Target, about 45 miles away.
I have NEVER bought food of any kind at a "food court", anywhere. This is only asking for trouble. I think VB is asking for same & possible brand "tarnation" if they let their products be prepared by the "chefs" at any such location.

I have two Targets very near to my home (and neither are Super - the two closest Super Targets are in Virginia). But I think that maybe you can buy a pack of hot dogs at ours since they do have a cold case and freezer, not sure and never tried. My thinking is this: that the food court in these two Targets would probably go with more of a local/regional supplier than something out of Chicago. I mean, it's New Jersey. I can more realistically wish for Grote & Weigel. I don't know what they use at ours, but I may become curious enough to ask. There's a boy who goes to my daughter's school that I've seen selling hot dogs there. I'm pretty sure he knows how to read a box (but you never know).

The only Super Target I've ever seen is in beautiful downtown Dranesville, VA. Fredericksburg is getting one, so if you're on I-95 in the future and want to see one, that's your best bet.
Charlottesville is getting a regular store. You would think we were getting a monorail or something.
Very cool about Vienna beef though. They're excellent dogs! Sounds like I need to make a Dranesville run soon.

I used to work for a printing company that printed the In-store signs, banners, posters and etc. vor Sears Brand Central!

When a new products, new line, or a new brand came out, Sears would have all different kinds of this stuff made. Then We took it to a company in Chicago, that mailed and/or shipped this to all of the Sears Stores. The local Sears store, didn't know about this until this new item or new promotion until they received the kits we had printed. Usually, thsy had the kit about 10 days before the Promotion or new Product went on Sale.

Could this be the same with Target, the local Target store won't know about Vienna Bef until about 10 days before they start selling Vienna Beef?

You’ll still be able to watch the fat poor people stroll by but with the added benefit of a roof over your head. I don’t care if they serve filet mignon; I’m not eating at Target.

Do you know why there aren't any Wal-Mart stores in Baghdad?

Because there's a Target on every corner.

The closest Super Target to Columbus, Ohio is in Indianapolis. I've only been to one Target store here and that was several years ago. I don't remember seeing any food court there.

Do you believe the Vienna Beef Company would change anything after 112 years of manufacturing hot dogs?

They would be stupid to do so.
