There's nothing wrong with 6 bucks for a loaded quality hot dog, fries and a bottomless drink. Having had my own business for many years, I long ago discovered there are some customers who will bitch about the price if you picked up their tab, hired a limo to take them home, and had a 5000 dollar a night companion waiting for them when they got there. I cleaned that up a whole lot from what you'd hear if you were in my establishment by the way. I'm so proud of myself.

Congrats on Big Dawgs American Grille !!! Mrs Benzee and I make a yearly visit to Gettysburg and we will be planning a fall visit this year with our newest addition Joey " Baby " Benzee . Probably will not be before our big Jersey Hot Dog Tour on Sept 17th . I will let you know when we will be visitng the area , would love to stop in and visit with a fellow roadfooder , especially one in the business!! Gettysburg seems to draw me back every year , haunting really to stand on the same battlefields that thousands of soldiers died in July of 1863 . Benzee

quote:Originally posted by rllgthunder I decided up front not to do Kunzler dogs because they are available in any local grocery store around here. Besides, I have found only a few companies that make footlongs that my local suppliers carry. Anything that needs to be special order puts foods costs out of the picture. I have also been told by our wait staff that people are asking which dogs are all beef or pork/beef mixed. Oddly enough, the pork/beef mix is proving to be just as, if not more, popular than the all beef. Could be the PA dutch influence? As of today we've been open two weeks and sales are climbing at a steady pace. The double throw fresh cut fries, hand blended shakes and chili are getting very good remarks. Having the homemade chili available in a cup or bowl served up with or w/o beans is proving to be a good choice for us. Customers are filling out comment cards and of the 60+ cards returned only 4 negatives have been reported (5 if you're the one who doesn't like country music). Of these four, 2 are suggestions for adding items so they are more constructive than not and very good suggestions overall. The only two negatives are about price (from a grandfather/grandson) but if you're looking for a $1.59 dog we're not the place you're looking for. Our special is a jumbo dog with chili/onion/mustard on a steamed oversized roll, a half pound of fries and a bottomless drink for $5.99. I'll have a website up sometime in the future. For those passing through Mechanicsburg we're called 'Big Dawgs American Grille' and we're located at 5206 Simpson Ferry Rd, just off Rt 15 and near the PA Turnpike/Gettysburg exit. Just wanted to let you know that I finally stopped in tonight for dinner. Enjoyed what I had, a #1 Chicago style (hold the peppers) with fries. Couldn't finish the fries there were so many. Good luck with the store. You sure have a lot of competetion where you're located.

Drew, Thanks for stopping by! I'm happy to hear you liked the #1 and if you have any suggestions please feel free to share them with me. I've had many positive responses and just a few negatives but both give me information to improve. You might have noticed we now have a 'chili pup' special. This special is two (2) small 10 to 1 dogs with chili/mustard/onions with an order of small fries for $4.99. This came about from alot of older people telling me they love the food but the portion is a little large for them as well. In response to this we offered this special and it is turning out to be a great seller for customers who want to split the special. It does mean a slightly lower ticket sale but it increases repeat business so the volume makes it worthwhile. We will be adding some new specials as well very soon. 'Chili cheese Nachos' featuring deep fried flour tortilla chips, a few dinner specials (hot roast beef and turkey sandwiches with mashed potatoes) and sweet potato fries are a few being tested in the kitchen right now. Competition is really tough here and we have considered moving to Carlisle but will not make a decision for a few more weeks yet. Access from the main road is a prime concern due to heavy traffic since it makes it tough to get in and out especially at lunch time. I thought that the rain today would make for a slow day but we really got hammered.

Sorry, just curious. Thanks Weenie Girl Check out www.hatfieldqualitymeats.com/products/hot-dogs.htm You'll have to go out east to buy them, since they're not sold at our Walmart's, Costco, or Sam's Club in the midwest. Sincerely, CSD

It's interesting how much difference there is all over the country when it comes to food! I had thought Hatfield's meat products were a nation wide brand but I'm seeing so many different names here on Roadfood that I've never heard of as well!

Just wondering how your business is doing. I just find your post when searching the web. Curious? - Why wouldn't you want the world's greatest hot dog - Vienna Beef! The reason they are so expensive is that they have never sacrificed their quality, unlike all the others listed. Vienna has used the same recipe since 1893 and it's still 100% BEEF. As beef costs rose, other manufacturers added wheat and soy to their hot dogs, not Vienna. Another interesting fact you may not be aware of - Nathan's is not a manufacturer. They actually have their hot dogs made by more than one company. HHHMMMMM......
