I can only hope that when they died they took their owners screaming in agony with them.

Not that I know of. Food and service issues, as far as I was concerned.

Oh, and the coffee was battery acid.

There was a Dutch Pantry in Columbus, Indiana at the interchange of I-65 and Indiana 46. We used to stop there on our monthly meeting trips to the college headquarters in Indy. it was a fine place for a pit-stop, and despite MH's disdain for the coffee our riders would coffee-up and usually order a bunch of the freshly prepared Apple Fritters doused in powdered sugar to take with us on the road. The fritters were more like large Hush Puppies with chunks of Apple in the sweetened dough than the Bear-claw things i see in the market-bakeries around here..

This was in the early 1980's. The last time I was there must have been about 1984.  I'd give it a 7 on a 10 scale for the fritters, and I don't care much for any coffee.

              Hello All,
The wife worked at a Dutch Pantry in the 1970's and
she says so much of the food was just boiled in a bag.
My father would take us there for special meals after
church, until it became so bad that he couldn't take it
              anymore.
              Take Care,
              Fieldthistle

I don't remember ever eating at one, but I had to google.  After seeing the pictures, a restaurant in Speers, PA looked like a Dutch Pantry.  There used to be one there, it's now Lorraine's Restaurant.

There used to be a Dutch Pantry here in Syracuse NY.  It closed in the 80s.
It is now a Colorado Mine Steakhouse Rest.

I remember eating at a Dutch Pantry in Pennsylvania in the early 2000s. It was close to I-80, so it was probably in DuBois, though it might have been Clearfield.

My biggest memory of the restaurant was that it was very messy - there were french fries smashed into the floor. The food was neither bad nor good, but the mess made us loath to return.

I don't remember the food as I was a child when we regularly ate at the one on I-70 up on a hill just before crossing from Richmond, Indiana, to the Ohio state line. I DO remember the gift shop and the hex signs they sold. I had almost a complete collection of the 8 inch sized ones. Lost them all later. As I have Pennsylvania German ancestry, the restaurant had meaning for me even as a child and even if the food was nothing special as some here state. As a child it was good enough for me. Although someone else posted this same online web address, I wish to post it too as I just found it today while looking up Dutch Pantry and hex signs:

Lots of history and some classic pictures of the restaurants.

Those remind me of the Apple Fritters they used to have for breakfast in the Navy. Tasty morsals they were.

I seem to remember one in Tampa, FL but although I may have ate there nothing stands out. Seems like the windmill was much larger then the one in the picture above.

I know this is a long dead thread, but I ate at one recently in Dubois PA and really liked it. It was an very good breakfast for a reasonable price. The WV location is gone now, unfortunately, but two remain in PA. You should make a point to stop off you are on I-80. Make sure to order the fritters. They are excellent.
