Hi.
The other thread was getting too hard to follow, and besides - it was getting in the way of the last trip report!

THIS SATURDAY - ROAD TRIP!!
The weather should be pretty good.

Plans have changed slightly, and are subject to change again, depending on everyone's input.

We suggest a Racine/Kenosha/Milwaukee meander.

Kewpee's, perhaps, for lunch.
Tenuta's for shopping and drooling.
Kringle hunt!
Mekato's Columbian bakery (35th & National in Milwaukee).
Dinner is still open. Thai BBQ? Ilijia's place?
Will there be a Kopp's run, even after all this?

Speak up, all you WI/IL people!!
Join us! Suggest places! Tell us times that are good for you!

    I'm in-no matter where we'd go

If we start in Racine or Kenosha, I'd suggest Kewpee Hamburgs in Racine

In Kenosha, I'd suggest The Big Star

or The Spot (sorry no pics)
followed by a stop at Tenuta's Deli, which btw, you never want to stop at while hungry http://www.tenutasdeli.com/tek9.asp?id=1&pg=blank

    or
if we met early enough we could go to Frank's Diner which closes at 2 and takes no orders one half hour previous http://www.franksdinerkenosha.com/index.html

Or dammit, McBob's works but then what do we do until dinner?

edited to add a cool link on LTH talking about Kewpee and kringles!

Once again - I have an appointment that will end around 11 AM. Therefore, I cannot be anywhere before that, and count in drive time.

I thought we were starting at McBob's in Milwaukee. Doesn't matter. I could happily do Kewpie's or the Big Star. We just need to make the decision as we may have some other folks who are not Roadfooders meet us wherever we start.

Still like the idea of Tenuta's/kringles/Mekato's Columbian bakery. Dinner up in Milwaukee sounds great and, as mentioned in the other thread, the flavors of the day at Kopp's are tiramisu and Butterfinger candy bar. So, yeah, we've got to stop there too.

We thought, since we were dong Tenuta's and kringle hunting, that it might be easier to just stick to that area, and then go into Milwaukee in the evening, instead of going back and forth.
Also, it seems it might be easier for the IL contingent that way.

I posted this to get something nailed down.
              Someone make a decision!!!!

                  OK!
                  Finally, some kind of order!

Big Star in Kenosha it is!

                  Time? 12.30?
                  Then Tunuta's and Kringle hunting.

Then Milwaukee for Mekato Columbian bakery treats and dinner.
Where are we having dinner? Ilijia's place? Thai BBQ? Old Carriage Cafe? Somewhere else?

Do we have any van owners? I certainly would kick in gas money if someone wants to chauffeur. If not, I've got a 5 seat Taurus if someone wants to ride with us. I assume the Illinois crew wants to meet at The Big Star.

Tenuta's is on 52nd St. aka Hwy 158 not that far away.

Darn it, I wish I was anywhere close to Wisconsin, because I'd sure be there for the kringle hunt. . I -will- be looking for pics of any found, btw. And it sounds like a wonderful itinerary!

OK, 12:30 at The Big Star, followed by afternoon activities. Now let's pick a time and place for dinner so the late comers will know when and where to find us. Any of the aforementioned options sounds good to me, although Thai BBQ is particularly appealing. Which one of these places puts us in the best position to make a Kopp's stop afterwards?

I still think dinner should be around 6ish, so as to have room for it, as well as give us time to get full fun out of Tenuta's and kringle hunting.

As far as where, I don't know. Mike says Thai BBQ is a bit small, so it depends on how many ppl are coming. We'd either have to call ahead, or choose a different place - one that can accommodate us all. It is near Mekato's, though!

You'd probably have to pass Kopp's on the way out of town no matter where we end up going, without too much trouble.

Thai BBQ has no large tables so they would have to join tables together; they should accommodate us w/o much of a problem. It would be good to know how many will join us as there are other options including a Vietnamese place that has a small but very good menu in the near neighborhood (14 blocks). There are 3 other SE Asian places within two blocks of Thai BBQ and a good SE Asian grocery store next door too. It's a very tired neighborhood on a slow upturn due to Asian immigrants and the Columbian bakery. It should be a very good Roadfood night.

Based on everything we're trying to squeeze in, I was thinking it might be even later, say around 7pm. If the number of people is going to determine the choice for dinner, maybe the answer is for the late comers to meet us in the Mekato's parking lot at around 6-6:30. We can get a final tally and make our decision there. Any thoughts?

                                        Later is fine with me.

There is no parking lot for Mekato's. It's all catch-as-catch-can street parking. Same with Thai BBQ and all those places nearby, if that's where we end up for dinner.

And I do suggest NOT walking from there to Mekato's. We're not exactly in the bestest of neighborhoods here.

There is no parking lot for Mekato's. It's all catch-as-catch-can street parking. Same with Thai BBQ and all those places nearby, if that's where we end up for dinner.
So the late comers can meet us in front of Mekato's.

We'll all wear our matching black leather jackets that say "Roadfood Disciples" with a crossed fork and knife on the back. No one will mess with us!

No Mekato parking lot. I'll check but it's possible that some of the kringle shops may not be open in the afternoon. If we have some Brewer game goers, they might then have a long time to wait after the game which I imagine should be over by 4, 4:30. I'd allot an hour max for lunch, an hour and a half at Tenuta's, an hour and half kringling and travel time, getting to Milwaukee by 4:30, 5 at the latest.

                                              Edited kringle news-
The only kringle place that matters (imho) O & H Bakery, is open 5am-5pm Sat. http://www.ohdanishbakery.com/ 1841 Douglas Ave. Racine, Wisconsin 53402 and while they all have their fans, pecan is most popular (and it is for a reason!).

                                              Some like Larsen's http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Overview.aspx?RefID=414 Open Sat. 6am-4:30pm.

There are some that favor Bendtsen http://www.bendtsensbakery.com/ Open 5:30-5:30

Lehmann's has its fans too. http://www.lehmanns.com/ Open Sat. 6am-3:30pm

Now before diabetes took me out of the kringle loop, I've tasted them all. Mrs MFL parents lived in Racine and at one time or another they all were sampled sometimes in a group setting like we are going to have, O & H took top honors but not for every flavor. I'll drive to whatever one you want but O & H..........................mmmmm.
I have a co-worker that used to live in the area and she says that Wells Brothers has the best pizza she's ever had (very thin crust) and to make it Roadfood worthy it comes complete with a bad neighborhood! Angelo's allegedly is very close.

That said, I'd like to state that the walk from Mekato's to Thai BBQ consists of crossing the street and ambling a half a block. No need for shivs or zip guns as the neighborhood is threadbare but not dangerous. You might see a wino taking a leak but you won't be asked for spare change, your wallet or your purse. There is a nearby restaurant, Asia Palace, that has long tables (and plenty of them), an in-house bakery that makes great french-style baguettes, and some very good food and even serves bubble tea (if you've had it, you probably are in love with it) but I've never ordered a meal without something messed up (language issue) and I've never been able to just pay the bill when I was done eating. The place would be best for our group meeting-wise but I just know the service will be frustrating. Thai BBQ is still worth any minor hassles. I say let's just plan on 5:30 and we can all scramble to make it at that exact time. We do need a final headcount though. I haven't heard from our baseball group recently. Are you guys still in for dinner?

I'm am going to try to get to the starting point to join you. I might take off after the Bakery back in Milwaukee (before dinner). I'll check back tomorrow to confirm the place and time. I did end up going to a memorial last night for a 39 year old buddy (since high school)and then another service today for a 57 year old co-worker that I've worked with for 20 years. I think I need a bit of fun this week, and meeting some new friends face to face sounds good!
