Great idea. I'm heading there for supper. A couple of patty-melts, rare, with a large bowl of Bert's chili.

I had breakfast this morning in Crossville, TN at the Waffle House with my daughter and Mamaw Smith. I had the waffle and hash browns and daughter had hashbrowns covered, smothered and a bunch of other stuff. Mamaw Smith had a egg sandwich that she could eat with one hand. This is the first time she has been out of the house since her accident. I took her to Nashville to supervise my brother moving his daughter into an apartment for her second year at Belmont. Waffle house was very good. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

Sundancer, so glad to hear that Mamaw Smith is able to get out and about, even on a limited basis. Give her our best and tell her we hope she continues to improve and enjoy those egg sandwiches. We'll be heading to our local Waffle House late this evening, our favorite time to stop in for a waffle and hash browns, scattered, smothered and covered. We'll lift a forkful to Mamaw's continued improvement.

I'm glad to see they are finally moving north, three locations in eastern pennsylvania that I am aware of. I81 carlisle, I81 clarks summit, and Rt 22 allentown, by the airport. Are there any in the western part of the state yet?

I haven't been to a WH in at least 5 years. Last night at midnight I decided to walk across the street from the hotel in South Memphis and go to the W House. What a fun experience. Place was full of regulars and I was the only Caucasian in the bunch but we had a blast telling stories and jokes. I loved watching the "chef" who was quite skillful with a spatula and keeping the grill organized, etc. Certainly had the feel of a roadfood establishment, the food was excellent.

Artery clogging and tasteless, that's my opinion of Waffle House. I also find them the be universally filthy. If the food was at least tasty and well-prepared, then I might overlook the cleanliness or the outrageous and alarming amount of grease in their food. I've always found the food to be vile, and I never understood the appeal. Their sickening record regarding service to minorities is the last straw, putting Waffle House on my "AVOID AT ALL COSTS" list. To each his own, I guess. They have survived 50 years without my business for the most part, so I suspect they'll live without my patronage for the next 50.

I suppose. I just stopped at my exit ramp and had a WH ham and egg sandwich w/ mayo and a large orange juice. And I didn't see one of our posters, he's probably at Pierre's eating breakfast of French toast on a tablecloth with cloth napkins served by a tuxedo'd waiter. Happy 50th Waffle House - BTW - is one of the top 2 or 3 privately held companies in Georgia.

But, just how many positive votes are you willing to allot to Mr. Hoffman? That guy will post every twenty minutes if he thought someone were counting positive Waffle House comments! Well, let's see, I haven't been to the Waffle House since last week, so I guess things could have changed. I doubt it though. I would like to find a Waffle House that could measure down to Wigo's descriptions. I've never been in one that was dirty, let alone filthy, and, hey, call me tastebudless, but I find their food quite tasty. As to problems with minorities, all I can do is go by experience. I've only been in Waffle House restaurants in Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Mississippi, so I can't comment on other places. But, I've never been in one where there wasn't usually a mix of black, white and hispanic people -- not many Asians, although some -- as customers and employees. The Waffle House I go to most often lost its last black manager, though. He was promoted to a regional manager's job and is in charge of eight Waffle House restaurants. Oh, and I'll sure try not to post anything more about Waffle House within the next 20 minutes.

I can say the same. I have eaten at WH in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Tennesee and I have always seen a mixture of races both as customers and as employees. Crappy service in some, but everyone got the same crappy service. Thats a management issue, not a race issue. IMHO !

You can do what you wanna do and you can like what you wanna like. Personally I certainly enjoy the WH and I like their food and their management. I have enjoyed their food for better than 40 years. if you do not like it, do not go there and if you do, do like the Sundancer does and enjoy it. They have the best hash browns in the USA. I enjoy their breakfast and all the rest of their food. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

If WH was a one-off this forum would universally love it. But because it is a chain some have to pan it for that reason alone. Personally I too think that they have the best hashbrowns I've ever eaten. The rest of their food is OK. But when I'm hungry i can always count on the HBs. Tripled and scattered for sure, sometimes with chili & cheese, sometimes not. I've only eaten at them in WV, Va and Md but I've never found them filthy or discrimnatory. MikeS.

WH may be a chain, but they are definitely roadfood (almost every interstate exit in the South - and increasing therefrom), but one distinguished from the regular FF places in that you can get breakfast at any time and not in a styrofoam container. It's the old-timey diner atmosphere perhaps that sets it apart. Fifty years and thousands of locations says it all. Yesterday, the governor of Georgia took a stint as a WH cook to mark the occasion.

Waffle House may be road food, but at the same time it is hard to say that all WF's are great. Stated earlier was that there are 1,500 WF's throughout the country, and they cannot all have the best hash brown's, they cannot all have great service, and I am sure that some of them are on the filthy side of clean. In my opinion, they are really not true roadfood, and most people like to think that they are because of the history that they have with them.

From today's Columbus Dispatch. A sidebar to an Assocxiated Press story on the Waffle House 50th anniversary: Waffle House No. 966, at the northwest corner of Rt. 161 and I-71 (in Columbus), serves more customers than any other — still. Aided by its location near several limited-service restaurants and its size, the restaurant ranks No. 1 across the Norcross, Ga.-based restaurant chain in terms of customers served annually. "It’s still the busiest one on the planet,’’ said Judy Thomas Blanton, the franchisee for the restaurant and 29 others in Ohio. Blanton, a University of Georgia graduate who joined Waffle House in a marketing role before being awarded the Dayton-area franchise, said the number of hotels and bars in the area help keep the 11-year-old restaurant busy. Unlike most Waffle House restaurants, which have 40 to 44 seats, No. 966 has 60 seats. Operational improvements at the restaurant by Blanton’s brother Fred Thomas, who manages the franchise’s restaurants, have been expanded throughout the Waffle House system, company spokesman Pat Warner said. — Barnet D . Wolf Now, Judy did join Waffle House in a marketing role. As it happens, though, that marketing role was being a waitress. Judy, her brother Fred, and all the managers, district managers and regional managers work the counter, the booths, and the grill on various weekends and all holidays, including Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I was surprised to see Waffle House Headquarter's are in Norcross Ga,. the reason I am surprise that for 14 years I worked for a firm in Niles, Michian at their Corporate Headquarters. In 1984, this firmed moved to Norcross and only took along their top mangement. All of this firm's employees, customers, retirees, stock holders and Vendors were told that Norcross was chosen to be the home of their next corporate Headquarter's because Norcross was one of the Nation's most elite, high profile, political correct, places in the country to have your headquarters. I was surprise that Waffle House would be loacated in this area of elite, high profile, political places in the country! The reason I am surprised because of the posts and links that I have read on this page, it seems that Waffle House isn't one of the elite, high profile, political correct businesses in this country. Is there something here that I am missing? Garry
