My boyfriend grew up in Hudson, New York and moved here to Charleston, SC about 10 years ago. He was talking the other day about some hot dogs he loves, can't remember the name, but that they had really red skins and that he can't ever find them here. I want to suprise him and order him some but I have no idea where to start... can anyone help me? i guess i want to know what the best Red Skin Hot Dog is in New York

Not sure... i think he said you had to go upstate to get them... the only thing he said that was identifying was that they had really red skins... i told him that ive seen the hotdogs with really red skins in the stores downhere andhe said they weren't the same, that he had tried them all and they just weren't the same

There are other brands that are very red in color, but I don't believe they are upstate NY brands. http://www.mainelobstershop.com/redhotdogs.html Hope you find what you are searching for!

I think neon red dogs have pretty much disappeared except for parts of New England (Maine in particular). I associate them with franks n' beans (not a personal favorite) more than dogs in rolls. Good luck.

I believe that they are called Glazier. My daughter was in that area and brought a 3 lb package home for me. The remainders are buried in the freezer. I'll dig them out and find out where they're made.

I don't know if they make it as far as Charleston, SC, but there is a manufacturer in eastern North Carolina known for their flourescent red dogs -- Carolina Packers, the dogs are sold under the name "Bright Leaf." http://www.carolinapackers.com/index.shtml

Tough one, Upstate dogs though plentiful in variety, seldom resemble what you are describing. I think the key here is Hudson, NY, it is not Upstate enough to escape the dominance of NYC style dogs. Even the NYC style dog is not really red, it just tastes different. To track it down I think we need more information: Natural casing or skinless? How many dogs per package? Expensive or cheap? All beef or a meat mixture? Most true upstate brands are a beef, veal, pork mixture. I have heard of but have never encountered very red dogs from Maine, but I have encountered this type of very red dog primarily in the South. By the way I would love to see an Upstate, NY hot dog tour. In fact it could be a grand combo tour. Albany to Buffalo, hang a left at Buffalo return trip enjoying PA specialty foods.

Hmmm, they had some red dogs on the Travel Channel hot dog show. Just tell your BF that you heard there were some some red hot dogs featured on the TC show and then you'll get the right name. Kinda devious but.... for a good cause. :~) Joe

Hi. Check out the review on this site for Voss' Bar-b-que, Its under the hot dog listing in restaurants. Thye serve Honest John's brand hot dogs. I've been there many times and I remember them being really red. Voss' is in Whitesboro, NY, but the hot dogs may go to other restaurants around the region as well.

How about Kayems? You can get the natural color online, but NOT the reds.. I have emailed with the Kayem people thru their web site, and they insist they taste the same, but to me they dont. I havent tried to get them yet, cuz 23 bucks for shipping still leaves me cold...... I used to get them in Massachusetts.. in the deli, they came linked together, but I see they have them packaged differently for their website. Those are the only New England dogs that I can think of that are red... Good Luck... and that is a great surprise. Let us know how things turn out.. http://www.costore.com/kayemdeli/productenlarged.asp?peid=59&pid=397242

They are called Glazier hot dogs. They are produced by the Glazier Meat Packing Company in Potsdam, NY. They have a natural red casing and are loaded with garlic. I live in Arizona and I have my parents ship them to me 10 lbs. at a time. They are awesome. There is a grocery store in Malone, NY that I think will be able to help you. They might even ship them. Yes, these are the ones! My daughter picked them up in Malone. They are beef and pork. More garlic than most dogs in this style, but not more than a kosher style beef dog. And yes, they are bright red.

There's a large Polish-American population around Malone - they grow potatoes among other pursuits. I wonder if that spicy red hot dog is a result of their influence? cheers, John

To add to a upstate N.Y. hot dog tour you should start on the eastern side of the Hudson in Troy....Famous Lunch, Charley's and Jimmies all on Congress street, then go West young man.

An upstate NY tour needs to start in Middletown, go to Kingston and Poughkeepsie, and Saugerties, and maybe Troy for the next stop for hot dogs. I guess about two weeks would be needed to just get started on upstate NY. Cheers, John

I saw that it was an old post but I found it while doing a google search looking for the dogs myself thought the info might be usefull to someone. I was born in Plattsburgh N.Y and now live in Colorado and miss some of the food that is only found in that part of the country Like Michigans, Poutin, garlic baloney, etc. I just ordered five lbs of the hotdogs and a quart of thier pickeled sausages for $30 plus $33 shiping. Expensive snack but it will be worth it.

Hi, I'd bet the farm your boyfriend is talking about Glazier's Hot Dogs (labeled frankfurters) from Malone, NY. I grew up in Malone and they were always a staple for the grill. I bring back 5lbs to Maine whenever I go home to vist my family. An earlier post was correct; D & M Market will ship them to you. Don't forget to get the recipe for Michigan sauce (goes on the dogs). If they won't give you the recipe just e-mail me and I'll send it to you.

I remember as a kid in central N.Y., pilgrim hot dogs were pretty red and if you boiled them the water would turn red. They were the cheapest brand in the store. For really good hot dogs try the link. in 2002 they were rated as the best hot dogs in the US http://www.liehsandsteigerwald.com/ sausages
