Wanted to share great concession window experience! Mon, 05/9/11 3:12 PM (permalink)
Hi kids, we made it back to Alaska after a grueling 7,000 mile drive in 12 days, with only some vehicle and equipment damage.
I wanted to tell you about the amazing people at Challenger Door who made and installed a custom concession window into our trailer.
We picked up our rig in New York, and after spending the night in Pittsburgh, we dropped off at their place the next day in Indiana so they could install while we went and purchased cook gear in Milwaukee. We had a one-day time slot, and they did the entire job in that time, which was complicated.
The trailer already has insulation, interior FRP walls, and electrical outlets which they had to remove and rewire. They also installed an outside customer shelf, as well as repaired our hood fan on the roof which had come off during the drive and punched a hole in the roof and the exterior skin of the trailer!

Our window is a custom upper-lower horizontal slider setup, with screens on all opening windows for airflow and mosquito management, and the outside cover was color-matched to the trailer's existing paint. The shelf is 14" with hinges and latches, all installed and perfect.
All this work was done custom, all done in the timeline we needed, and they did all the extra stuff - for around $1,600!!!

If you EVER need a window, go see Challenger - the Amish workers in the plant are some of the hardest-working skilled craftsmen I have ever seen.
Thank you, Challenger Door!

I don't hate to say I told you so. Ive posted about Challenger Door company several times here on roadfood and to my knowledge your the first to take advantage of their good craftsmanship and great pricing. They are truly good people.

How much was the window and installation excluding the repair work and rewiring?

You mentioned "repaired our hood fan on the roof which had come off during the drive and punched a hole in the roof and the exterior skin of the trailer".

That sucks how did that happen? Was it a problem from the builder or some sort of road mishap? Will your insurance cover it?

What are the dimensions of your window, and yes pictures would be great.

      Good luck
      Jack

The installation was $570 and that was with making the hole in the skin, cutting through the insulation, and the interior skin. that also included changing the wiring built into the wall. They had to make and install a header which they made up and installed without additional charge.
Included was installing the shelf on the outside and related hardware. They put the roof fan on at no charge. I'll need to fix the wiring for that myself, I just had them put it back and screw it down.

Apparently, a combination of road vibration plus pre-tornado winds (up to 70mph) was enough to rip the fan thingy off the roof. The unit 'seems' ok, but I have not tested it since I need to take the whole thing apart, look for cut or broken wires, etc... It's snowing right now, so I have to wait until better weather. I also discovered that one of the skylight vent covers got smashed when the fan went flopping around, I'm guessing I can get a replacement at an RV store?

Insurance is covering the damage to the truck but that's a different story. I'm probably not going to make a claim on the fan assembly unless the motor isn't working, but I think it's OK.

One more view. the window is 6'x3' and the uppers and lowers all open to the center, and all have screens for ventilation. The bottom screens also slide open to the center for passing goodies out to customers.
