Washington DC weekend Sat, 07/25/09 1:22 PM (permalink)
I searched the forums and there are great posts for the DC area.   Thanks but I'm hoping that I might get a few additional recommendations.....

I'm traveling to  DC next weekend with my family to tour the city.   I'm hoping that you can recommend a few places in downtown DC either near the Capital or surrounding areas.   We're looking for a few "stops" to fit into our jammed pack days of touring.  We will have access to the metro but don't want to spend a great deal of time traveling to and  from restaurants.

Thanks for any recommendations that  you think might fit into our Friday, Saturday and Sunday DC schedule.....

I haven't lived in DC since 2006, so maybe it's changed, but there's really not a lot of good choices for tourists in the Mall area.

Your best bet would be to eat in the area of the Verizon center, which is a few blocks from the National Archives and pretty close to other attractions. There's lots of restaurants in that area, including a Fuddrucker's which is probably my favorite chain for hamburgers. DC's chinatown is also right there, though the chinese food is nothing special.

Another option is the food court at the Ronald Reagan building, though I'm not sure how much of that is open on Weekends.

The only great non-pricy DC restaurant to recommend is Ben's Chili Bowl, which is several stops away on the Green line from the mall area. If your family loves Chili dogs, it's worth a trip, or if you want to see a historic African-American neighborhood, and the African-American Civil War memorial, that's another reason to go. If that doesn't appeal to you, you can skip it.

If you let us know where you'll be staying, I'm sure people here can give you pretty good dinner suggestions close to your hotel.

apparently, the Ronald Reagan building food court is open on Weekends. It's probably a good option, since you'll have a lot of choices.

We will be staying on SW 6Th Street just a few blocks from the National Mall.

        Thanks
