Water: How Do You Like It? Tue, 10/26/04 4:38 PM (permalink)
Seeing the various threads that have caused quite the heated reactions among us, I thought we could all share our thoughts on something we all really like: Water. Personally, I just can't get enough of it -- and call me crazy, but I have it every day.

Personally, I like mine straight from the tap. I prefer it cold, but not really refrigerated. Of course, I do have a Brita filter for that extra clean taste. I do tend to indulge myself most of the time and buy the large bottles of Stop & Shop seltzer, iced sparingly. I may even drop a wedge of lime in it when feeling feisty.

In fact, all of this has made me quite thirsty. Think I'll have a big glass right now!

Anybody else love water as much as I do?

Straight from the refrigerator water maker (well, not maker). Fill the glass with ice to the top, then fill in with water. Drink through a straw. Straight up.

      Grampy,
Thanks for opening a topic that Should prove safe enough for all! The Tap water here in Southern Indiana seems to "taste fine" without additional filtration. In SoCal, the High Desert Water had a real heavy aftertaste of chemicals..maybe from all the stolen cars dumped in the Aquaduct. There we did use bottled water (Arrowhead) for drinking.
Here , whatever the folks in PA,WV,Ohio and KY add to the Ohio River just seems to give our drinking water more "body". Shaken or Stirred it does the job!

Water? Water!? What the heck are we talking about water for???

Just kidding...I generally prefer mine without ice as long as it's cold. If I have ice, though, I went cubes, not shavings. No lemon, no lime. Water is typically my beverage of choice when eating, although with foods such as burgers and a few others things, nothing beats a Diet Coke for me.

I rarely drink my water straight. Normally, I turn it into iced tea before consuming it. But I do think it's worthy to discuss what form of water we imbibe.

I live in two locals these days: San Francisco (my home of the last 22 years) in the summer and Green Valley, AZ in the winter. In SF, I drink water out of the tap, cook with it and make my tea with it. The water source there is Hetch Hetchy Resevoir--a once-lovely twin to Yosemite Valley that nearly 100 years ago was dammed to provide the City with a water source. The water therein is essentially pure melted snow--literally "pure as the driven snow". Furthermore, with a sad history of so many people in SF with HIV and other immune system problems, the Health Department and Public Works Department are particularly attuned to making sure the water is clean and safe and stays that way.

The situation in Arizona is completely different. The water here comes from two sources. Most of it comes from wells--out of the ground in other words. Some comes from the Colorado River via the Central Arizona Project aquaduct. Both those sources are too polluted and suspect for my liking. Blocking my view of the western horizon is a large open pit copper mine run by Phelps Dodge. And this area has a long history of aircraft maintenance and other aircraft-related industry. Both mining and aircraft maintenance are seriously polluting industries well-known for contaminating their environment, including ground water. I don't drink the stuff out of the tap. I have a cooler and home delivery of bottled water for it from Sparklettes. I also have a Pur filter on my faucett and I use the product from that for, for example, boiling pasta or vegetables.

Straight from the tap into a jug - store in the fridge to let
chill to preferred consistency - into my favorite glass and enjoy....

I agree. I am not a water drinker...........too bad as it is so healthy. My pet peeve on water is when you go into a restaurant and they try to sell you this 500 per cent marked-up bottle water and try to make you feel cheap when you say "I will have tap water, please."

                      Dearfolk,
Am I lucky! In Athens, the Athens of Georgia, our water comes from the Middle Oconee River and contains about 31 ppm of dissolved solids. Now peoples, that's SOFT! Pilsen, Czech Republic, has water from a similar granitic source that comes in at 25 ppm, which is the reason for the city's success as a Pilsener brewing center.
Atlanta's comes in at 48 ppm, which is still idiotically soft. East Point (a suburb) gets its water from Sweetwater Creek and not the Chattahoochee River: theirs is 35 ppm. Douglasville's comes from Dog River and has something like 13 ppm: it is over and over voted the best tasting water in Georgia.
On the other end of the scale, Burton-On-Trent, England's water filters up through a bed of chalk, so it is absurdly hard... about 1150 ppm, which is why the city became a Pale Ale brewing centre. Morristown, Tennessee used to draw from the Havley Springs, which has something like 1247 ppm and comes out of a bed of limestone. I can only dream of the India Pale Ale I could concoct with that water....
My Daddy once said to my Mother: "Betty, I've been doing some thinking... there's just two things that can't be improved upon: a good glass of ice water when you're thirsty and a good honest hug." Since he's been gone since 1973 and she since 2001, I think I'll do the next best (available) thing and go have a good swig in a nonce; the hug'll wait for the right person and the right moment.
Marginally Thirstily, Ort. Carlton in Quite Liveable Athens, Georgia.
                      P. S. I haven't ever bought a bottle of water: our tap water is too good; I don't need to!

BTW, in the 9/03 issue of "Consumer Reports"; on its "Goofs"
page, there was an item on the placing of quart bottles of Evian
in Marriott hotel rooms with this nice little warning:
"This bottle of Natural Spring Water is provided as a
service for our guests. If consumed, $4.50 will be
billed to your room. Please Enjoy."

I really like cold flavored seltzer water. I also like Aquafina quite a bit. Not a real fan of tap water where I live, looks like what WC Fields had to say about his reason for disliking it.
I used to live in Hamilton, OH years ago, and they apparently won some water taste contest. Claimed to have best tasting tap water in U>S>

Water is my drink of choice with food. But like Spudnut said if it's a burger then a cola is my preference.

When eating seafood I like a wedge of fresh lemon with the water and I rub the peel side around the rim of the glass. If it's Mexican then I like to do the same with lime.

I live outside city limits and have a well - the water is great and always cold.

I love water too. I use my Britta filter when I'm "up north" and I get bottled water when in Florida for the winter--Zepherhills-I can't imagine not having lots and lots of cold water to drink.

Why anyone would,,,I mean you dumb...you call that water???

                                      Kidding.

We have one of those culligan water coolers at work. I actually use a 64oz mug, I must drink a gallon a day. I gave up coffee and diet coke as by three o'clock I felt like a dog.

I like my water neat as opposed to on the rocks. When it's hot I like my water straight up ("rocks" really hurt my teeth.)

The tap water in L.A. is pretty undrinkable so I drink Sparkletts bottled water. My healer (I know that sounds soooo LA but I've got some health probs that western medicine hasn't been able to cure) says that I need to drink at least 150 ounces a day, and I tell you that amount when you're not active and it's not hot is very hard to reach.

I'll drink tap water only if it sits in the fridge for 24 hours... We have chlorine and flouride added to our city water... If I drink it straight off the tap it gives me mild cramps... Though when I get into the country, it seems nothing beats fresh Michigan well water! (Ice Mountain steals our water about 40 miles north of here and bottles it).. Either way, I work outdoors during the summer and go thru gallons upon gallons of water every week.. Normally Aquafina, though I do purchase Ice Mountain now and then...

Filtered, poured into a chilled glass. Wouldn't want any ice to dilute it!

We go through so much water in our house, I'm constantly refilling what used to be a tupperware cereal keeper several times daily.. I love winter because you can get cold water straight from the tap! I also love the flavored sparkly water and plain sparkly water.. I can't get enough!

The colder the better. Brita pitcher at home, water cooler at the office. For bottled water I like Glaceau Smart Water, they have some really tasty refreshing light flavors that aren't sweet or artificial at all. One of those things you probably either really like or don't.. one of the flavors, for example, is Lemon Cucumber. For fizzy bottled water I like Talking Rain sparkling water, also naturally flavored without all the sugary ick.

When I travel back towards home in NY, I love cold tap water. I could drink it by the gallon. Unfortunately, when I am home in Florida, the tap water is absolutely awful, so I tend towards the bottled stuff.

Every time I crack open a botte of water, I recall the Penn and Teller Showtime episode of "Bullsh*t", where they debunked the bottled water myths. I thought the scene where they faked a water "sommelier" in a fancy NY restaurant was absolutely priceless. I can still see the looks on those folks faces when they showed that the water that supposedly came from the "rainforests of South America" at 10-odd dollars was actually poured in from a garden hose out behind the restaurant.

One side of my little town is well known for it's somewhat snobby attitude toward pretty much everything. Several years ago when my son still played football I was asked to help out with the concession stands on a hot day during a junior league football game. The football league kept the profits for the concessions, so I gladly said yes. It was an incredibly hot day for September, and we had a huge run on bottled water, which we were selling for $1.25 a bottle. (A nice little markup, I'm sure!) We ran out almost immediately, and I began offering cups of iced tap water to anyone who asked. I was amazed by the looks of absolute revulsion this offer usually brought. (Only from the women. The men weren't terribly concerned with where the water came from, as long as it was cold.) At one point during my shift I was back in a storage room restocking the soft drink cooler when I found a case of empty water bottles. I thought this was odd, and asked myself "Why would anyone keep a case of empty water bottles around?" The answer came to me almost instantly. "So someone can fill them and sell them for $1.25 at the junior league football game!" I decided that I was that someone and asked the woman who was in charge of the concessions if it would be okay. At first she thought I was kidding, but she soon realized that I was serious. "You can do anything you want. I don't know anything about it." I took this as a resounding "YES" and started cleaning and refilling the bottles, (they were dusty,) then walked out and stuck them into the big, ice-choked cooler with the "sports drinks". Word soon got out that we had a new supply of bottled water, and within fifteen minutes I had sold all 24 bottles. I'd make a big display of twisting off the cap before I gave the bottles to the thirsty fans, just so no one had cause to question why the seal was broken on the cap. In the end the junior football league wound up with an extra $30 in the treasury and the fans walked away happily lapping up their incognito tap water. To this day, the lady who ran the stand that day shakes her head whenever she sees me, even though she knows "nothing", and I never cease to be amazed at how easily people can be fooled.

You only needed to have Penn and Teller around to tape this episode and play it back for the snooty neighbors. I would have loved to see the looks on their collective faces as they devoured their tap water -- at bottled water prices!

BTW, I hope the statute of limitations is up on this endeavour of yours!
