Watermelon BBQ at Loveless in Nashville

I am from Pennsylvania and work at Lowe's unloading trucks. I always try to talk to the drivers about BBQ while I am unloading them. The other day a trucker stopped and told me about a place in Nashville Texas called the Loveless Cafe that mades the best ribs he ever had, I asked him what was so special and he told me that they put cut watermelons overtop of the ribs while they cook and let them drip on them. Is this for real? or was he just putting me on.
I googled and found the Loveless Cafe but nothing about
Watermelon Ribs.

Any help out there from the Teneessee Connection would be appreciated. Has anyone ever tried this or tasted them?

Thanks foryout time

He must never had been to the Ridgewood BBQ in Bluff City, TN!

However the Loveless is fantastic. I don't know the answer on the watermelon, but I betcha someone around here does. We have plenty of Memphis locals... Good luck getting the answer!

I have been to the Loveless Cafe several times in the past 7 years. I have never seen anything like what you have described.

In your opening post you say that the Loveless is in Nashville, TEXAS. Is that a typo? The Loveless Cafe that has nationwide recognition is on the outskirts of Nashville, TENNESSEE.

Here is the CityScape review and reader feedback on the Loveless Cafe in Tennessee. Maybe that will shed some light on your question.

My "Loveless Cafe" cookbook, written by the Sterns has the recipe for the barbecued ribs in it. There is no mention made of watermelon.

Thank-you all for your help you are right Al-The Mayor-Bowen it was a typo I was trying to do two things at once and I failed. It is in Nashville Teneessee. Greymo if your Loveless Cafe cookbook doesn't have it in, maybe the driver was just putting me on thinking I was a dumb notherner. Thanks again for your help and input.

The Loveless Cafe in Nashville has Georges Watermelon Ribs as a daily special every Wednesday so he wasn't pulling your leg. Go to the menu on their web site.

However, I can't find the menu that shows daily specials, just one .pdf menu...?

Wait a sec, duh... it's on the front page! But you have to WAIT for the flash thing on the right to go through its "slides", and you have to look today because it's Wednesday. HOWEVER I saw it once and I just waited another 5 minutes and it didn't show up again. However, I verify the existence of watermelon ribs.

You have to wait for the photo that rotates to come around to saying Wednesday's George's Watermelon Ribs, or whatever, then click on it. It's mainly photos of Fay.

Ok... I have now waited over 10 minutes! Saw Carol Fay about 50 times, but have not seen the special again. Good luck to those looking, I'm sure it'll come back some time.

Thank-you everybody especially cecif for all your help. I just found this one the net. I did see it on their Wednesday menu also. Would love to find the recipe but if it isn't in their cookbook I guess it is experimenting time as as soon as I find watermelon in Pa
THanks to all that helped me it is much appreciated

The Eat Your Way suggested the Loveless Famous Ham and the Fried Chicken. We had the Ham and the Watermelon Ribs. The Ham was good but not a retry, the Watermelon Ribs were incredible. The Ribs are smoked for 5-7 hours then covered in watermelon (for tenderness not flavor) and smoked another 5-7 hours. They are incredible not to be missed.

How do you smoke ribs for a total of 10 hours let alone 14 hours, without them falling apart? Are they using the rind and meat of the watermelon directly on the ribs? In other words are the just cutting up the melon and laying it directly on top of the ribs? Is this an attempt {although it may be very successful) to keep them moist?
I'm not knocking it, just curious. If it works I'd do it. Come on someone has to have talked to an employee that shared a little information on how this is done.
    Thanks

I am with you Dr of BBQ, I am on another forum and all they talk about is 3-2-1. I think that many hours they would fall apart or be like mush. I found that post on the net, that said they visited the Loveless and that is what they told them that they do to get the ribs so tender. I think if you put a boot on the cooker that long it would be tender. The trucker that relayed this story to me said he thought that they told him that they put cut watermelons over the ribs and left them drip on the ribs. Love to find out the answer to the watermelon mystery.

    Thanks Doc for your input

I used to and can make a watermelon BBQ sauce. I would throw the pulp and seeds into the pot and cook it down with the rest of everything else. I would put the sauce through a strainer to get the seeds out.
The tenderizing aspect of watermelon is possible. In Korean BBQ sauces, they use Asian Pear as part of the main and primary listed ingredients. Some fruits work quite well for doing this.

Isn't papaya, or something like that, a main ingredient in many tenderizers?

Nevermind... they make you think the biscuit recipe is in the book but don't include it. Don't think I'll be wasting my money on that one.
