Wawa's sandwiches Sun, 01/13/08 11:00 PM (permalink)
Over the last few years,Wawa'a has become a roadstop for us when we're travelling. Something for everyone...and their made to order sandwiches..using the computer to custom-place your order with tons of variations is a cool idea...great stuff for a great price. They had a concotion over the holidays where they stacked turkey and dressing and potatoes and cranberry sauce in a bowl!!!!
What do you guys think?

Uncle Bens sold that "concotion" years ago in the frozen food section, turkey, dressing, potatoes, green beans and cranberry sauce" nothing original on Wawa's part.

I enjoyed the Wawa on my recent trip to New England. Clean, good sandwiches and convenient.

I'm waiting for someone to ask "What the heck is a Wawa?"

answer is : It's like a 7-11, (only better), with based in , you guessed it, Wawa, Pa, where they even have a dairy farm there that makes ice cream.

I do enjoy some of their Wawa ice cream flavors.

The nearest Wawa is only 1/2 mile away from my condo.

The newer Wawa's are being built as "super wawa's" with gas stations attached. And clean bathrooms inside.

I agree that the set-up they have with the computer that enables you to tell the sandwich-makers exactly what to put on there is a great idea. I wouldn't go to them for something like an Italian hoagie, because there are so many better options for something like that here in Philly, but I'll go to a WaWa on occasion to get a turkey-blt hoagie.

When I was driving I stopped at the Wawa in Allenmtown every now and again because it was the only decent truckstop in the area. I enjoyed it very much. You can get a salad and fresh fruit 12 months a year. Yes, I would try the turkey bowl. They have very good food there. I can never get enough turkey anyway.

              Ellen,
We have had Wawa's in CT for many years. Most were conv/deli but nothing like the one in Allentown. Since though all the area Wawa's have sold out and become Krausers.
My fav Wawa ice cream was chocolate marshmallow.

I have never seen a WaWa store in CT., but I have seen quite a few Krausers. One has just taken over a "Quickie Mart" type place about a half a mile away. The computer inovation may be helpful, but I still see myself becoming stuck in line while somebody takes their time picking Lotto numbers.
I don't see this place generating enough business to support a sandwich maker, and the cashier cannot leave the register.
If I see one or the other named places on a long stretch of highway, I would check it out. I like truckstops and their atmosphere.

Here's a dirty secret of mine. Whenever I am on a long drive and take a snack and rest break, I will check out the frozen burrito section. They are without a doubt pure junk, but I can't get enough textured vegetable protien to go with my Sun Chips and bottled ice tea......
Regarding the ice cream selection, do they make milkshakes?

Wawa's is a favorite stop of mine anytime I am in Pennsylvania and Virginia. They are generally very clean and I sure do enjoy their concept of ordering sandwiches and they usually have a very good selection of other goodies.

Wawa is all over NJ. Most of the ime for me it is a quick milk, soda or quick sandwich place while on the run. I would not substitue a really Sub for what Wawa makes, but it is good. Coffee selection is very good.

One of the things I really miss about NJ is WAWA. I cannot wait to move back to NJ and get my daily fix! I would visit WAWA at least daily when I lived in NJ-sometimes more than once a day-before and after work. Whenever we are in NJ we bring the coolers and stock up on WAWA fair-in addition to other yummy NJ foods.

Wawa sold out to Krausers quite a few years ago. If you ever travel Rte 34 there was one in Derby and one in West Haven in the middle of the road. The one in West Haven used to make awesome eggrolls.
The last time I had a shake was when McDonalds had the golden arches built onto the building. They always left me too thirsty.
As far as truckstops, the major chains are so commercial that they have almost lost all their appeal. The TA in Branford used to have a very nice restaurant. The waitstaff made it a very nice place to go. Since they remodeled, they did away with the restaurant and put in 2 fast food places.
Brother, when I have driven up to 11 hours straight with only short bathroom/walkaround breaks I want to relax in a cushioned seat or booth while I dine. I dont want to stand in a fast food line waiting for people who are not trained in customer service but as a mass production machine part, to screw up my order of food flavored salt. One of the neat things about truckstop restaurants is that they will serve any meal anytime of day. They never bother you to hurry and eat and leave. That's why alot of them have horseshoe shaped counters. So you can order your meal or just a cup of coffee and bs all you want. The best ones are the mom and pop places. All the courtesy plus very good food.

Wawa stores in NY and New England were sold to Krauser's, but not the company (i.e., Wawa, not Krauser's, still owns the Mid-Atlantic stores named Wawa).

I drive by both of these places when I go to the V.A. hospital. The one in West Haven is directly across the street from it. I will check them out as it just so happens that tomorrow I will be going to the hospital via Rt. 34. I'm a sucker for eggrolls. I'll stock up on them if they are still available and if they look good.

I certainly hope that those stores are better than the one I mentioned in my earlier post. It is no different from what it was prior to the name changeover and I never went to that place to begin with. Too trashy with a large selection of adult magazines next to the check-out stand...

This is a large chain, right? If Sheetz gets put down in the FFF Forum,, then certainly WaWa's should be in the same boat.

well, apparently, the mods agreed with me. So apparently, the two can be compared, and it wasn't off topic. And, for the record, the Sheetz I've been to, blow the top off the Wawas I've been to.

sorry doggydaddy, Wawa's do NOT make milkshakes... (although it would be hard to beat those chocolate malts we had at the Island Burger in NYC, right?!?)

but you can get a nice little pint of ice cream in some interesting flavors like the "kitchen sink".

That must have created quite a traffic obstruction. Was it in the right lane or the left lane?

Yes they do have milkshakes-at least they did in September. They are "premade" already in a cup and in this little refrigerator. I had one in Mt Laurel Wawa and it was not too bad.

I agree the Wawa's by me do have premade Milkshakes (Choc, Van, Strw, Coffee) and a whipping/blender type machine to whip them up to a nice thick shake. I have never seen eggrolls at WaWa so I'm curious about what those posts were about. The one thing I should say is that the WaWa's vary by location quite a bit. The one where I live is rather small, with an OK deli counter, no bathrooms, a small isles. The one in Princeton is massive, clean bathrooms, huge deli selection and a huge to-go sandwich/salad selection. Very different experiances.

They've been divesting themselves of the smaller older locations that do not have gas pumps. It seems they may hold on to a select few that have strong sales they can't ignore though. I go to one time to time because it's near my office and in this area you can't go a half mile without running into one. But I don't ever prefer to go there if I have a choice. It's just sandwiches, etc, that are just ok, nothing to rave about.

Wawa, not great, not bad, but always open. They are a lifesaver for those of us who sometimes work the night shift or during bad weather.

Checked out the one in West Haven and there was a deli counter with someone behind it. You give the order directly to her. They had many hand printed specials posted on the wall. One of them leads to another topic around here as they had a 'Rubin' sandwich.
No ice cream, except for frozen novelties in a small freezer like any other convenience store.
When I asked about the eggrolls, I was told they don't sell them.
Between the one down the street and this place, it seems that I am batting 0-2. I suspect the one in Derby will be no improvement.

Wawa's is one of my favorites. Their hoagies and rolls are always fresh. Their prices on other goods are a little high, but the stores are kept clean and bright. They do a very good business in my neck of the woods.

Not all of the newer stores have gas pumps. There is one down the street from my office on 291 in Essington, PA that was recently (within last year) renovated and a large new parking lot was added. Gas pumps were not added (sadly, for me, because their gas is almost always somewhat less expensive than the competitors around here) because the township would not permit the zoning to be approved - I believe they thought it was too close to area schools. However, there has recently been news locally that a group of people were adding "skimmers" to Wawa's gas pumps in my metro area to latch onto folks' credit card info, so I will be paying by cash from now on. I don't think this is exclusive to Wawa, but better safe than sorry.
