Ellen, you need to be a lot more specific.  Links?  Steps to reproduce the issue, etc.

Sorry if I don't respond immediately.  It is the holidays, and as much as I like you guys, I would like to spend most of Christmas with my family.

Sorry, I'm just a little cranky today...
(was up too late messing around on Roadfood.com)

The links I meant was that I was trying to get rid of the 2 empty big white boxes on page 1 of my Tampa report.
(the pics came off already, but now I want the white space out of there) Thanks, Stephen...       understandable! You like us, but you've got  a life, too .
 P.S.
after one gets the big yellow box with the "message successfully edited" notice, it seems to take too many extra seconds to get back to the main page.

P.P.S.  happy holidays, guys!!

Try going to the bottom, and deleting.. maybe its like an email, where you have to go to the bottom and delete up to get rid of dead space.
Not sure, but maybe just a thought, Ellen..
I dunno.....

It  WORKED, Tara ! All that dead "white space" is gone now.   Thanks for the "Tara tip"!        I'm gonna sleep GOOD tonight! It may be only 9:30, but I'm exhausted; too many 3 am nights lately...

Happy Holidays once again!!

Hey, there you go folks. If you do not like the scoring feature just make your profile unavailable, that defeats it. Of course, that being the case why have it? " />

What part of my initial question was unclear?

I can get parts and support for my 25 year old Porsche all day long..and online to boot.
Do software folks now deem themselves as the "doctors" aka "god" of the virtual world.

Yet another indiviual with a tone and attitude but no help.
Stephen , LMK.

jjjrfoodie

All I was saying is that web pages are made to work with the browsers that the majority will be using. It is not a matter of software people playing god, it is that to have features people want and that will make their online experience safe and productive things have to be current. Do you complain that your anti-virus software is too current? To use your car analogy, making a web site that works for IE5 is like expecting a highway to reserve a lane for cars from the 1930's that can't go over 40. It would be a nice gesture, but not very practical.

The help that anyone would recommend is to update your computer and software. IE5 is full of bugs and security flaws. There hasn't been support for it in many years. If you don't or can't update or upgrade the unfortunate reality is you will find yourself encountering software and web pages that won't work well for you.

Sorry if the cold slap of reality is too much "attitude" for you.

Since I have no answer, I assume what I use is not supported.

Having help purchase and install/upgrade a few forums, I know taht often during installation, not all OS and browser options are enabled in the bse software download.purchse.  That is all I was asking.

It puts the weight on me to deal with it. Fine.  But oddly, VBulletin 2008 , IPBoard 2008 and the 6 other forum software programs I encouter daily have no issues whatsover.

Reminds me of the old"It's not you, it's me" line when I used to date.

Yep, trade that old 69 Camaro for a 2008 Dodge Caliber.  Newer is ALWAYS better.

See ya in April or when I can score some online time with a loaner.

I did this out of curiosity. I tried Mac Internet Explorer 5.2.3 which I believe was the last upgrade for the Mac. With it I can read the forums but Log In seems totally disabled. If I click on it nothing happens. Other than that it does not appear to be any other problems in the message boards.

Any guesses as to the large spike and subsequent record number of guests the other day?  That was reall a large increase.

ChiTownDiner - That was caused by a database change (TSQL Trigger, to be exact) that ran out of control.  It was my fault and shouldn't happen again.

I noticed the same.  When I saw about 30K folks on line, I knew there was an issue.  Stephen sent me a email indicating that there was some issues.

John, the "new posts" thing works almost like the active topic thing did. The only diff is that it is not sorted by topic heading. I do miss that.

I don't know, but buttons, things that show when a topic has a new post and some pictures weren't showing up properly or at all when I was using IE and Foxfire.

I downloaded Opera and everything is running smoothly and I can see everything.

However, the print is still too small to read it without straining.

Using the Opera operating system has fixed most of my issues.

Stephen,

When I click on all forums and go to , let's say trip reports.  There is an icon showing that I participated in the thread or stars showing that the thread has been rated.

Any chance of having those icons show when I go to "Posts since last vist"?

Is there anyway we can "active topics" back?
Also it would be really nice to have an events forum where meet and greets or other events could be posted rather than having them buried inside the various forums where they are easily missed?
Thanks

I have this page bookmarked am happy with the sort I get as a result:
http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/search.aspx?searchfor=today

I wish every time you click on something it didn't always open in a new tab.  The old protocol in that area was better IMO.

If you go to Forum Navigation > Forum Menu > Posts since last visit...

http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/search.aspx?searchfor=lastvisit

You get threads with new messages only and you don't open new tabs. When you repeat the above any new posts while you were occupied in a thread continue to show up. Also, click on the colored page icon next to the thread title to go directly to the first unread post in that thread. That also will not add tabs. If you click on the thread title it will create a new tab. After you read a thread and repeat the Posts since last visit procedure any thread titles that you have completely read will go from bold type to regular and the color page icon next to it will disappear. Those are nice visual clues.

Re:We Are Listening! 2009/01/11 14:37:17 (permalink)
I understand the compelling reasons for the change to the new forum software, but become really worried when prolific posters who I have enjoyed so much start saying that they feel unappreciated and start talking about posting elsewhere.

Frankly, let's learn from this experience.

Major software changes need to be thoroughly tested in a beta edition that people can volunteer to use at their own risk. In other words, if possible, keep the old running at the same time until the inevitable problems with a new version stabilize.

I enjoy using beta’s and giving feedback, but the problem here during the last few weeks is that everyone was forced to serve as a guinea pig, whether they wanted to or not.

Stephen, I also worry about you making a shared log in to the regular site and this forum a lower priority. If you factor out that large spike due to a technical error, it seems like postings, especially by new visitors, are very significantly down. That profoundly impacts the value of a forum like Where Should I Eat.

Of course, forum visits could be down this time every year because of the holidays. I don’t have the access you have to comparable stats.

I agree,  The "rate-a-poster" idea stinks (well that'll get me a bunch more negative points) This site is about food...not judging our feloow posters...and I see on other threads how some old timers are hurt...I have a thick skin...but I beg the moderators to stop this system which pits friendly poster against friendly poster.

I find it extremely un-American to allow people to anonymously rate posts. It will just lead to an escalation of insults, such as "..and to the person who gave me a lousy rating on my last post in this thread, you can go #^*% my *%@$."

??

Pretty much everything we do and say on the internet is being done anonymously. There are precious few here who have disclosed their real name...in fact there was a furor when the software originally made this info viewable to others.

Why would it bother you more of less if a poster with some random name says your post stinks or that same person does so without giving you their fake name? Is it the lack of an opportunity for retribution? No chance at revenge? No opportunity for a flame war?

As Stephen said some time ago, The forum software originally came with the scores shown next to every post.  I felt that added little value so I removed it.  Scores are part of the package, and as you can see from the presentation, I have drawn very little attention to it.  So, ignore and move along..

Mind if I chime in here.  Now remember this in MY opinion.

Yes the opportunity is there for the childish few to abuse the intent of the "Rate Post" system.  Already we have "The One Star Wonder Boy/Girl" who gives a one star rating to the mear mention of a chain restaurant.  We also have Leethebard being singled out by the childish one or few.

But remember that most of the people who use the system are basically saying that a post was (to a certain degree, 1 thru5) funny, helpful, informative, etc.

Personally, I like to keep positive, like most Roadfooders.
