Weenie Beenie

Despite my dislike of yellow mustard, I'd sure love to get my mouth around those two dogs on the home page today from Weenie Beenie. My, but they look good!

And they were as good as they look, especially the chili smoke.

Good job anyway, buffetbuster.  The other month, I believe in Michael Hoffman's  someone's thread about half-smokes, Weenie Beenie came up as "the other half-smoke place."

I love Weenie Beenie.  They do a pretty good breakfast, too. An all day good place to stop for a tasty cheap meal. I've been to the one in Shirlington. Their half smokes are great, and cheaper than Ben's Chili Bowl. Unfortunately, it's not metro friendly - a long walk to nearest metro stop.

The parking lot, in the morning, is also a popular spot for day laborers to get picked up - however, Arlington County goes through periods of time where they crack down on this.

The Weenie Beanie looks a lot like a Coney Island, an everpresent staple in the state of Michigan.  I wonder how they compare in taste?

Not my thread. I've never had a half smoke.

I have a history with Weenie Beenie from the 60's and 70's as they were owned by my good friend's dad, Carl, and uncle, Bill - aka Beenie, Staton. The Weenie Beenie of today is a throwback to the time when this type of place was common throughout DC and it's suburbs. A shame most have fallen by the wayside.

There is still a surviving sister place, Burger Delite, with the same menu, located in western Alexandria at the corner of Edsall Rd and Pickett St.  Burger Delite was owned by Jack McGwinn who bought Weenie Beenie from Bill and Carl sometime in the mid 70's.

As pointed out by MiamiDon, the only place to get the 'real' halfsmoke from that era is Ben's. WB's halfsmoke, while very good - especially with chili, is more akin to a Polish sausage.

Both the WB and Burger Delite are also among the last remaining places in NOVA to get real Carolina BBQ.  Apparently, when the Pentagon was being built, many of the laborers were from North Carolina, and local restaurants catered to them by offering North Carolina specialties, particularly BBQ.

I went back to the Weenie Beenie for the first time in some twenty years recently, and am pleased to report the half smoke was as good as ever.

    i95,

I have so many fond memories of the 'Pig', thanks for the great pic.

Here's a nice piece which covers the history of the Dixie Pig  and the Griffins: http://gwhsaa.com/st-dixie-pig.html
