Wendy's is bought out by...

...Arby's, believe it or not. DUBLIN, Ohio - The owner of Arby's said Thursday it is buying Wendy's International Inc. in an all-stock deal worth $2.34 billion that comes after the burger chain's board rejected at least two earlier offers by the company. Triarc Companies Inc., which is owned by billionaire investor Nelson Peltz, will pay about $26.78 per share for the company, which has about 87 million shares outstanding. The price is a premium of 6 percent from the company's closing price of $25.32 Wednesday. Under the terms of the deal, shareholders at Wendy's, the nation's No. 3 hamburger chain, will receive 4.25 shares of Triarc Class A stock for each share of Wendy's stock they own. Atlanta-based Triarc said its shareholders will have to approve a charter amendment in which each share of its Class B stock will be converted into Class A stock. Triarc said it will also change its name to include the Wendy's name. The Wendy's board has been studying strategic alternatives since early last year. Sales have slid despite a struggling economy that should benefit the chain. Wendy's shares fell 32 cents to $25 in electronic premarket trading.

another article I read says wendy's will expand into breakfast. Now will the more choices make it better or worse? Not so sure, but it can't compete with mcdonald's breakfast.

That's odd fattybomatty, because going back at least 15 years for sure, every Wendy's I've seen had a full breakfast menu.

Until fairly recently, Wendy's opened up at lunchtime here.

I eat lunch at Wendy’s at least once a week. They just started doing breakfast by us a couple of months ago. I've tried the biscuit & gravy and a sausage biscuit, both off the dollar menu, to me neither are worth repeating due to the poor quality biscuits. It looks as if the flagship item is a Frescuit, IIRC it’s pushing $3.00. I’ve not tried it as it’s more then I care to eat at 6:00am. I agree, MD’s has no need for concern.

Wendy's had a breakfast menu in the early to mid eighties. It was pretty good. Their made to order omelets were my favorite. The breakfast sandwiches (served on a biscuit with a egg-mcmuffin style egg with sausage and/or bacon with cheese) was a very good seller at the drive thru in the stores that I managed. Their biscuit recipe was very good. Better than the current Hardee's recipe for sure. We made them fresh every day.

Wendy's also tried selling fried chicken for a while. They made a big deal, at least here in Maryland, that they were selling Perdue Chicken. I was pretty young at the time, so I don't remember how it tasted.

Wendys actually had the Best Fast Food Breakfasts of all. I remember back in 1986-87 getting breakfast there ALOT. Their Hashbrowns Rocked!! Nobody was more surprised than I was when they just dropped it like a hot potato. Now Wendy's "Superbar" that was something I remember with great dread. EVERY SINGLE TIME, I got the superbar, I asked myself "WHY OH WHY, Did I NOT get a sandwich?" I was NEVER Happy with a Superbar purchase. Thank God that went away....

No. Actually their Taco fixings were quite good. I remember a 5-6 average when I had them. The salsa was a bit on the mild side.

It's a moot point in St. Louis. The main local franchisee went bankrupt several years ago and almost all of the Wendy's are still boarded up. There are only one or two open in the metro area. I'm surprised Wendy's Corp hasn't found another franchisee by now.

Looks like Wendy's is testing their new breakfast menu in select locations, and plan to offer it in all restaurants by late 2008 or early 2009. I'm not so sure how well it's going to go over nationwide. But I'm not a huge Wendy's fan - and I do not eat Arby's, period - so neither the merger nor the new breakfast is going to affect me much. LOL

Is there anyone else out there who believes that Wendy's has a better burger than McDonalds or BurgerKing?? I don't indulge in fast food very much but on rare occasions when I do it's always a burger at Wendy's.......once in a blue moon it's a Culver's butterburger. Wonder what this does to Tim Horton's as well.........

A few Wendy's by me(Daytona Beach area) just started serving breakfast. The one closest to me is alway's empty at breakfast. My mom and I tried their breakfast once and it was ok, nothing to rave about. It was a small menu and they were extremely slow. I guess the staff was still learning. Hardee's, to me has the best breakfast. With the exception of a steak, egg and cheese bagel from McDonalds, which I rarely get because McDonalds isn't my first choice for breakfast. I had Arby's last week because I had coupons. I haven't had Arby's in a while and I ordered a beef and cheddar. Is it just me or did they change their quality of meat? It was terrible. Maybe it was just a fluke. I'll try it again, because I used to love Arby's. Now, Roy Rogers on the other hand was leaps and bounds, taste wise, ahead of Arby's. It was so good! I used to live on Long Island and they used to be all over the place. They all closed up except for 1, about an hour from where I lived. We would have to wait until we went on vacation to get one on the jersey turnpike. It was something to look foward to on a really long, boring trip to wherever my father decided to go.

Put some A-1 sauce on them with some fries and a shake. Now that was a good meal. Sadly the Roy Rogers by me turned into an IHOP

I recently noticed signs at Wendy's locations here in the Chicago area announcing Italian beef. Not sure why they would even bother trying to offer this Chicago specialty when you can swing a cat in almost any direction and hit local chains and mom-and-pops doing beef the way it ought to be done. It might fly at Wendy's locations far away from here, to serve Chi-town expatriates who have no other choice or the uninitiated looking for something different. Admittedly, I haven't tried Wendy's Italian beef, but I don't see the need. Seems to me anyone in the Chicago area would write off this offering sight unseen (and untasted).

McDonalds has lobster rolls in NE during the summer months. Same idea. Although, admittedly I tried a lobster roll from McDonalds. so, maybe, it's for the tourists, who say, "hey, what the heck - I haven't the time to stop at a real place while passing by chicago at 70MPH." They had NY pizza in NYC, too. Serioulsy, though, I think it's just another way the local FF joint can appear to be linked to the local flavor.

I had the crab cake at McD's in Salisbury, Md and at a Royal Farms in Westminster, Md. I knew it would be sad, and it was, but I still tried it. I'm sure I'd try the Wendy Italian beef. Maybe it's like when you tell someone the plate is very hot. They HAVE to touch it At least I was able to stop at The Narrows on Kent Island for a crab cake after the Salisbury debacle. Kevin

When I was a student at THE Ohio State University, my apartment was about 10 feet from the Wendy's drive-thru menuboard. I can confirm that they sold breakfast - for a while. Ever morning I woke up to the 'wahh wahh wahh - cash or visa?' coming out of the speaker/megaphone. Also, the Superbar was a great way to gorge oneself for only a few bucks. And Biggie Diet Cokes and Jr Bacon Cheeseburgers also fit well into the college students budget.

Darn it. My local Arby's closed last October and there's still no Wendy's within 50 miles of me (although oddly, there IS a Tim Hortons 15 miles away). I'm not big on Wendy's mainly because their fries suck (absolutely NO salt whatsoever, it seems), but they have a few good menu items. My next question is, will they start dual branding á la the Yum! brands? Imagine an Arby's/Wendy's/Tim Hortons.
