Wendy's new sandwich line

If you have seen the TV ads for the Wendy's "Freshcotta (sp?)" line, you may understand why I stopped by for a test today. I bought the Ham and Swiss. It was not bad, but much smaller than it looks in the TV ads. At $3.59, it is not expensive, but IMO, not a very good deal for what you get. The local sub shops don't need to worry.

Smaller than it looks on TV? It already looks "slider" sized.

This will most assuredly go the way that their "pita" sandwiches did. Wendy's is scraping the bottom of the barrel now, just like Hardee's has been doing for several years. Too bad neither of them just can't go back to the basics that put them on the map, etc.

I'd be happy if Wendy's came back with the salad bar, we used to go there for that because so few places offer a salad bar. Almost all of their prepared salads include meat, we're mostly veggieheads and it's not the same ordering a salad and "picking" the meat off.

A fast food chain describing their bread as "artisan" is like fingernails on a blackboard to me. I guess the marketing people think that term means "baked" or "edible?" I suppose they can lie all they want in their ads but, it is such an insult to real artisan bakers and artisan bread lovers.

They aren't bad for Wendy's - I had one of the club ones last week (there's a Wendy's a block from my office), and it was pretty good for a quick sandwich at lunch. Not worth a special trip there, though.

That's the main reason I wrote Wendy's off (i.e. no salad bar). They could have raised their prices but they just ignored us veggie lovers.
Nothing wrong with higher prices considering limited sales life of salad ingredients, IMO.

Have you tried Sweet Tomatoes? I think you mentioned living in the Western Suburbs. There is a St. Charles location.

More upscale and pricier than Wendy's. They have soups, breads, pasta, a baked potato bar and desserts also.

I tried Arby's gyro, more out of curiosity than hope.
It is their same meat product drenched in a white sauce, with a dusting of spices, and mysteriously parsimonious with the onion.
    Not a gyro

I think they just look gross. I think the bread would be good toasted & then with some eggs & cheese, or breakfast meat too if you eat meat. But cold cuts? If I want cold cuts, I am not going to go to Wendy's. I am going to go to Subway or Cousins.

    Not a gyro

    I had one today.
    Mine was surprising decent.
OF course, I was NOT expecting Gyro meat, but just the regular RB.. and got what I expected.
Cucumber sauce could have been better, but hey.. Its Arbys...
Didnt expect it to be great, yanno.
    I would buy another one.
Maybe the franchise by me is a bit better than yours.

Too lazy to log in to edit.
There were 3 slices/rings of red onion, a nice piece of leaf lettuce, 3 tomato slices and a a decent amount of the RB dusted with seasonings.
It was not drenched in sauce. It had just a right amount.
They did a good job with mine.
Like I said above, it must be whoever is making them and the franchise.

We go to Sweet Tomatoes every few months, it's not real convienient for us and we usually have no other reason to go to that part of St. Charles. Every now and then we need a salad fix and I must say, ST has a great variety and is always kept very clean and fresh.

To get back on topic, I was forced in to a late lunch today, didn't have a lot of time so Wendy's was nearby and and I tried the Black Forest Ham and Swiss Freshchetta. I thought it was pretty good and that it had a good amount of ham on it, very generous amount actually and it is definetly bigger than slider size. I doubt if I'd go back for one though, I thought it pretty expenive considering the little local Italian deli one town over makes a really good Italian sub for $3.50, plenty of hot peppers and dressing to boot!

Tried Arby's again, based on your posts, at a different location.
My experience was more like yours..less sauce, more, and better onions and tomatos.
not a gyro, but a better sandwich.

It seems to me that Arby's could build the gyro to order to one's preferences. I cannot see this item being anything less than freshly prepared. Correct me if I am in error. No, I haven't tried one. No, I do not intend to try one.

Had the Arby's Gyro for lunch today and quite enjoyed it. The tomatoes were decent, the lettuce crisp, ample beef. It could have had more sause, but overall good. Am sure when I order another it won't be the same.

Isn't that what they call "extra value?"
