Growing up a short bus ride from Venice Beach...  I was right between Beatniks and Hippies.

That is the exact response I was going to make when I saw the question.

Ha! You should have seen me in my US Navy dress blues in my monthly sojourn to the Harvard University Faculty Club in the middle of the campus. I definitely was not a hippie and really stood out in 1969.

The Coffee and Confusion, a Beatnick place in downtown DC, a place me and my gang would venture into to listen to the gibberish poerty the Beatnicks came out with was a hoot, we'd only stay for a half hour or so, they seemed like space aliens, snapping their fingers and yes Mar, Bongo drums, I think this was 62 or 63!

We all have to start somewhere!

And I thought I'd gotten off to a good start - after all, we were the only two National Merit Scholars in our high school class.  My first true indication of trouble was her voting for McGovern.  This was especially maddening as I, then, wasn't old enough to cancel her vote.  Then there was the matter of her pot-smoking & day-drinking ...  long story short, I got the house and the kids.

I have a theory about the male casualties caused by WWII and the effect it had on the Gene Pool that influenced the development of the Hippie Generation.

I spent the summer of 1969 learning to be a Marine. I was only there (Quantico, Va) for 6 weeks, but it changed my life. Even though I was going back to college, I was made aware that I would be subject to random drug tests, so I stayed straight.

I've heard that theory, but then how can we explain the success of Germany and Japan after WW2, or S. Korea after the Korean War?

When I was in high school and college I either had my head buried in a textbook or I was in the practice room at the piano (music major).  I had no interest in that hippie nonsense.

I remember our grade school teacher letting us look out the window at the hippies when the high school bus would make a drop off.

My favorite recollection of hippies is the hippie couple who attended our church and had a sweet little girl that they actually named " Love Child".  I often wonder how old that girl was before she changed her name!

Me, no way, I didn't like true Hippies, many of my friends were weekend Hippies, only one was hardcore, he moved to a cabin in Montana, no plumbing, electricity, etc. He was a fitness freak, although after a Bike ride, as in Bicycle, from Montana to my Beach place in Oxnard, Ca. he drank a case of Beer and smoked copious weed. This was in 1976. Funny how so many former Hippies turned into successful Businessmen/Women.

Couldn't agree with you more about many former hippies tuning out to be successful business people, happen to know a few.

Those were ECONOMIC gains fueled by the Billions & Billions of US Dollars. The hippie thing was a SOCIAL thing. Apples & Oranges.
