I will be traveling from LA, thru San Fran, Portland and Seattle.
Any good hot dog places along the way?

Many thanks.

Celery Salt, posted this on another thread, but may be of interest to you. BTW welcome to the great community of RF-ers!

If you get down toward Olympia (well worth a stop on its own) don''t miss The Spar. A wonderful old "time warp" of a restaurant right in the heart of downtown-and a short walk from the state Capitol. It''s a store-front cafe that feels like you''ve just stepped back into the 1930''s. Wonderful breakfasts (sit at the counter if you want to get the real atmosphere), huge cinnamon rolls, great omelets and homeade bread. Always crowded with workers from the nearby state govt plus many Olympians in-the-know. Lunches and dinners are big and a great value, everything made from scratch, good RF-type burgers w/home fries and lots of other home-style comfort food.
And OBTW they have live jazz and a very mellow atmosphere in the evenings after 9:00 (I think it may just be on the weekends) when the place fills up w/ jazz lovers and students from nearby Evergreen College. This place is the real deal so don''t miss it if you are in the vicinity. Olympia is not a very big town so it''s also easy to get to from I-5.

In the SF bay area you have a few decent choices, but the ones I know best are in the east bay (Oakland, Berkeley, Concord). Of course if you have read here a while, my favorite place is Top Dog. IMHO the best grilled dog in the nation (and I do mean that), hell the BEST dog period. Get 2 and before adding any condiments take a bite. You'll never go back! The have a website and several locations:

      http://www.topdoghotdogs.com/

Another old time favorite is Original Kasper's on Telegraph in Oakland. Very old time feel and good steamed dogs. The staff can be a bit surly, but it actually adds to the ambience. Been in the same spot since 1929 too!

      http://www.originalkaspers.com/home.html

Just up the street a bit is Casper's Hot dogs. While there are several Casper's joints around the area, this was always my favorite.
I always got mine with just cheddar cheese. Man was it good! Only drawback is they have no "all beef" dogs. Just beef and pork franks. But according to a lot of foody reviews, this place is the definitive California dog. They even manufacture there own.

      http://www.sparsausage.com/

Next door to the Grand Lake theater in Oakland on Grand Ave. is Col. Mustards, serving a pretty fair imitation of a Chicago dog. The red hots are delicious and the presentation is very good. The only reasoin I say imitation, is that they have a fair array of dogs for you to sample, rather than just a Vienna Beef with the trimmings. It's a tad pricey, but definatley worth a look.

Another place serving a Chicago style dog, is in Concord. The place is called Hot Dog Palace. It's on Grant St, and if you really want to make a fun time of it eat luch there look around and get dinner at Spaghetti Factory across the park. Back the last time I was there (2 years ago) they served the best fries in the bay area. And for a few bucks you get an order of "all the fries you can eat" I use to order a pair of Vienna beef dogs, one full Chi style, one with just cheddar and a an order of all yo can eat fries. I was usually uncomfortable with heartburn for a while but it's worth it.

Now it would be real easy to make a trip and hit these joints all at once. Depending on where you are coming from, it's probably best to start at Col. Mustard's, then take Lakeshore west to Telegraph and head north and hit Original Kasper's (on your left about 2/3 mile up), head north again for about 3 or four blocks and hit Casper's, continue north on Telegraph into Bezerkeley, it'll turn one way and then start looking for Durant, make a right 1/2 block and you're at Top Dog. Grab a few and then get back into the car and ask for directions to highway 24 towards Concord. Take it to where it splits to 24/680 and take 680. Exit immediately at Willow Pass Rd. and head east (away from the Sun Valley mall). Go up about a mile until Todos Santos Plaza (a nice park) is on your left, make a left at the light onto Grant and it's at the next corner. While you're in Concord, you can hit Casper's and Top Dog again if you and your stomachs are so inclined. Bring a lot of tums!

Now if you really want to bring some of your fun home, you should hit Miller's Meat packing and buy a 5 pound box of thier beef dogs. Some of the best available (good grilled or steamed, doesn't do as well boiled though), and they are food service so pretty damn reasonably priced too!

You really should give Oki Dog a try. I'll link you read Steve's writeup on it, and you can draw your own conclusions about whether you should give it a try. I rather like it.

Everyone should try Pink's at least once. Don't let the Hot Dog Spot review scare you away. Order the 10 inch strech dog without chilli(it's better on the fries). Or for something spicier, the foot long jalepeno dog without chilli.

If you get over to Santa Monica, you can go to the Oribinal Hot Dog on a Stick stand.

I agree. Everyone should try Pink's once, just to say they tried it. There'll be no second time for me.

The original stand is on the beach near the pier. It's a groovy little red shack. I think it's been there since the forties. Huell Howser did a show on it. Haven't been there in years, so I can't comment on the quality. I agree that the mall stores have gone way downhill.

Oh, I agree that Pink's is not as great as some make it out to be. There are a lot of things I don't like about the place. But, through much trial and error, I've found that the 10 inch strech WITHOUT CHILLI is a dog I really enjoy(I get mustard and relish on it). One might assume that it's just a longer version of their standard dog, but I don't think that's the case. It has more of a tasty "all beef" flavor. And whether or not you like their chilli, it just overwhelms the flavor of the dog, so I stay away from it.

Pink's mild Polish is too bland and the spicy Polish is too hot, but the jalepeno dog WITHOUT CHILLI works for me.

The hot polish at Pinks is so hot it's inedible (..,and I like spicy food). The mild polish tastes great, but it's full of veins and tendons. Hoffy Dogs, like the ones at Pinks, are cheap. (You can put cheap in bold upper case too.)

My problem with HDOAS, and most corn dogs for that matter, is that they use turkey dogs. Birds and dogs don't mix.

                    See ya

Any dog-related trip through LA should include a visit to Jody Maroni's in Venice Beach (there are other locations, but that's the original). Their website is:

                      http://www.jodymaroni.com/locations.html

I think most of their sausages are fabulous , and the fries are pretty good, too !

If you get down to San Diego try a place called Chicago on a Bun - they are in the La Jolla area and it's the best I've had on the west coast -- very authentic and very good.

In San Francisco, the Rosamunde Sausage Grill in the Lower Haight has recieved some excellent reviews. They grill the dogs in front of you and serve it on a toasted bun. Lots of good toppings also. And you can take them next door to the Toronado for a beer to wash them down.

In the East Bay, Top Dog seems to be alot of peoples favorite dog. I probably walked past the store on Durant Ave.in Berkeley a hundred times and never stopped to try. Wish I would have stopped for one.

The burgers and dogs are decent but the experience is unbeatable at The java House, a great spot just along the bayside from SBC Park

A bit away from anything tourist but worth the trip is Joe's Cable Car Restaurant:

And here's one I haven't tried, but it's in a 'hood where I'd expect it to be good: Annie's Hot Dogs and Pretzels

Hello mar52 and welcome! Tito's is good......and one of the few late-night places available in that area. That, the Empanada place on Sawtelle and of course Johnny's were my hangouts when I worked in Culver City. Well, an occasional lunch at Nathalee Thai, the Cuban place (forget it's name now) on Sepulveda or Versailles too!
Occasionally I pass thru the area these days and just want a decent quick meal close to the 405-----something like a good burger or hot dog. Any suggestions?

                                      Hi!

I grew up basically at the corner of Venice and Sepulveda... grew up for 20 years+++

Howard's Famous Burger on the Northeast corner (kind of) of Venice and Sepulveda is good. Famous for their bacon avocado burger, but I like mine without. 7-11 is on the actual corner and Howard's is in the tiny strip mall just to the East of it.

I love Versailles! That's a good idea for tomorrow's dinner. I can have 3 meals from one of their chicken dinners.

I even eat occasionally at what used to be called Lucy's in the original Tito's location. Interesting burritos and pupusas.

I also like the Empanada place but I wish there was more filling and less dough.

A bit away from anything tourist but worth the trip is Joe's Cable Car Restaurant:

And here's one I haven't tried, but it's in a 'hood where I'd expect it to be good: Annie's Hot Dogs and Pretzels

In the Seattle area, the following local small chain serves a pretty good variety of dogs, including "bocks" and "brats"

How long's it been? You might not recognize that area now. South Beach, the whole Embarcadero, Mission Bay--they are all coming alive and getting built up. But both the Java House and Red's Java House have enough outspoken followers to survive the redevelopment, I think.

I don't live anywhere near there (I live in Civic Center) but it's a short ride on the N-Judah and I love just walking around that area. Hardly ever go to baseball games but I enjoy just walking around SBC Park and having lunch at Java House. I think SBC Park is beautiful.

                                                  That's too bad.

I know that most businesses close due to a lack of sales but is that what brought them down?
