Ralph-
Thanks for the fine trip report.  You have a gift for food description.  Did you try any of the sides at Doe's Eat Place, like the shrimp or the tamales?

In all the times I have eaten at Young's Jersey Dairy, I never did eat at Golden Jersey Inn, though I was curious.  Those chicken and dumplings sound terrific!

The Stern's wrote up the General Butler S P Inn in one of the earlier Roadfood Books.
Al, is the restaurant there still open?

      Cliff,
Here is the website. The food service sounds like it may have changed since the Sterns visited. We may try it when we go to the Ribberfest at Madison,IN next month.

I wanted to try the tamales, but I didn't feel I had the appetite for them. For sides at Doe's Eat Place, we had a starter salad, and french fries and steamed vegetables. The fries were sturdy and greasy. The salad was basically just a salad, though the lemon vinaigrette dressing was nice. The vegetables had completely escaped my memory until I looked back at my pictures; I don't think they were distinctive.

Promise me that if you come to Paducah, KY again in your travels, you will try something other than Doe's Eat Place. Just a few doors down on either side, there was Whaler's Catch - a wonderful fish restaurant and market with a crow's nest view of the river and Max's Brick Oven - a beautiful restaurant with a courtyard - some of the best food you'll find. One street over on the other side of the Market House, was Cynthia's as well as Tribeca Mexican - you'll never go hungry in Paducah....for Lunch, there is Kirchhoff's bakery and restaurant.
