What DOES Michael Hoffman like? Sun, 01/30/11 12:04 PM (permalink)
The Waffel House...not fried chicken, not bacon, to eat at least, the smell, yes. I'm going to guess coffee, deep fried pork tenderloin sandwiches, not celery, maybe scrambeled eggs. Hunting.  Oh yeah, he likes Greymo, and The Ancient One! What else?
I posted this in the wrong forum, sorry! Mods please move, thanks!

Sour mash whiskey, dark ales, wine, apizza, pasta, cheeseburgers, steak, pot roast, corned beef, corned beef and cabbage, pastrami, lox, mish mosh soup, sweet and hot Italian sausage, sausage, egg and cheese sandwiches, split-grilled hot dogs, kielbasa, moussaka, things like that -- even you CTF. Oh, and fishing.

Definitely not deep fried pork tenderloin sandwiches.

I thought Mr. Hoffman also likes hot lobster rolls.  He's provided some good recommendations for places in Connecticut that sell them, in any event!

Mish Mosh Soup can have Kreplach in it. Had heard the word for many years but never really knew what it was so I looked it up. Wonderful thing, the Internet. Found this recipe. If I make them, I'll use Wonton Skins:
              Kreplach
by Sharon Lebewohl and Rena Bulkin
              The Second Avenue Deli Cookbook
Called Jewish wontons or raviolis, kreplach are pasta dumplings, usually triangular in shape, filled with minced meat, onion-spiced potatoes, or cheese. Kreplach carries a lot of lofty symbolism; its triangular shape represents Judaism's three patriarchs: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Equally lofty: the Jewish momma who can roll her kreplach dough to optimum thinness (so that, according to Sam Levenson, "a tempting bit of their buried treasure should show through"). If the wrappers are not paper-thin, your kreplach will taste like "craplach." However, though we've included wrappers in this recipe, there's really no reason to knock yourself out making them. Just purchase wonton wrappers in a Chinese food store or supermarket, and making kreplach becomes a cinch. There's even a kosher brand called Nasoya, available in many supermarkets; look for it near the tofu.
              Yield: Makes about 30

              Wrappers
              3 cups flour
              1 teaspoon salt
              3 eggs, beaten
              3 tablespoons cold water
1 egg, beaten, for binding kreplach
              1 tablespoon salt

              Meat filling
              2 tablespoons corn oil
              3/4 cup finely chopped onion
              1/2 pound chopmeat
              1 egg yolk
2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley
              1 teaspoon salt
              1/4 teaspoon pepper

              Potato filling
              2 tablespoons corn oil
              3/4 cup finely chopped onion
1 teaspoon finely chopped or crushed fresh garlic
              1 egg yolk
              1 cup cooked, mashed potato
              2 tablespoons minced fresh parsley
              1 tablespoon minced scallions
              1 teaspoon salt
              1/4 teaspoon pepper

              Cheese filling
              1 cup farmer cheese
              1/4 cup sugar
              1 egg, beaten

Prepare 1 of the 3 fillings and refrigerate before you begin preparing dough:

              Meat Filling
              1. Heat corn oil in a skillet; sauté onions until nicely browned, remove with a slotted spoon, and set aside. Add meat to the pan and sauté on high heat, stirring frequently until all meat is browned. Put the onions back in, and sauté with meat, stirring constantly for 1 minute. Let cool.
              2. In a bowl, thoroughly mix meat-onion mixture with all remaining ingredients.

              Potato Filling
              1. Heat corn oil in a skillet, and sauté onions until nicely browned. At the last minute, add garlic, which browns quickly.
              2. In a large bowl, combine onion-garlic mixture with all other ingredients, and blend thoroughly.
              Cheese Filling
              1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl, and blend thoroughly.
              Make wrappers and cook:
              1. Sift flour and 1 teaspoon salt into a large bowl, and create a well in the center.
              2. Pour eggs into the well, and, wetting your hands, knead into a dough. Add water, and continue kneading until dough is smooth. Roll dough into a ball, place it in a bowl, cover the bowl with a damp cloth, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
              3. On a well-floured board, roll dough as close as possible to paper-thinness with a floured rolling pin. Cut into 2-inch squares. You can roll each individual square a bit thinner before you fill it. Have bowl with beaten egg, a teaspoon, and filling at hand.
              4. Place a flatware teaspoon of filling in the center of the square and fold diagonally to create a triangle. Seal sides with egg mixture.
              5. Bring a pot of water to a vigorous boil, add 1 tablespoon salt, drop in the kreplach, and cook for 20 minutes. Serve in chicken soup or, for dairy fillings, with sour cream and fried onions.
              .

What do you call the fifth thing listed, between apizza and cheeseburgers?

I sorta like that but I would add Canadian whiskey and perhaps some weird chips and perhaps a perch sandwich.?

Our friend Michael is a clever fellow---he covered a lot of bases with his list of eclectic likes----but he overlooked the stuff he grew up on.  The Fruits Of Long Island Sound.  Lobster, clams, oysters, bluefish (all fish).  Ah but he snuck corned beef and cabbage into the list, along side kielbasa. moussaka, Pastrami, lox, mish mosh soup, and pasta.

A fine list Michael Me Boy-o, but where is the egg foo yung, the egg rolls and chow mein.

I also noticed you started right off with the cocktail hour.  Good lad.

                          Chewy, an excellent post.
Joe since when do you talk baby talk---"My Bad".   Who have you been hanging out with?

Ah, ancient one, I didn't bother listing the obvious stuff. As to chow mein, just the saddwiches at Nickel Charlies, thank you. Now, I'm not a fan of egg rolls, but egg foo yong is something I used to really like, but haven't had in probably 30 years.

I'm sorry.  You had me up until that.  That is entirely un-midwestern.  Thusly, un-American.

Russ, I love Crabill's, and I've never owned a firearm I didn't like. And I'll readily admit to coveting many of those I don't own. But I've never had Bay corn (although I have enjoyed corn grown near Milford Harbor). As to catsup on hot dogs, you have to be kidding.

Catsup or Ketchup it makes no difference-----either is awful on a hot dog.  In fact, other than a touch lightly applied to French Fries,  it is gross on anything.  Used to hide the fact a piece of meat is tasteless is about the only purpose catsup or ketchup has in this world.

As it happens, I like catsup on my corned beef hash, and mixed with horseradish for dipping beer-steamed shrimp. I can't think of any other use I make of the stuff.

While I did enjoy a number of MacDonald's Travis McGee novels I don't consider myself a real fan -- I just haven't read enough of them to qualify. As for Louis L'Amour, well, I did like many of his books, but I thought he became formulaic.
