Ahh, the logic of the McDLT, which never was really embraced. I figure even if it would have taken hold, McDonalads would have had some issues in keeping it around when they got rid of the styrofoam boxes in favor of the wrappers. I imagine they would have had to create some kind of recycled heavy cardboard container.

I actually just had lunch in Minneapolis and they had taken tomatoes off the menu.

What used to go on my char grilled burgers was a tomato paste type of salsa, sour pickle slices and chopped peanuts. Ate them from the time I was maybe 5 until 50 a few years ago when they closed the last Woody's Smorgesburger.

I miss that place!

My burger logic has nothing at all to do with anything from McDonald's.

That would be no logic.

I'm in Houston, and the Texas standard seems to be lots of mustard. And often jalapenos.

Myself, I'm terribly open about burgers. I generally prefer American cheese (but it depends on the burger), and I usually add lettuce, onions, tomatoes, mayonnaise, mustard, and ketchup (although I can live without one or the other when it comes to tomatoes and ketchup, which makes sense). I don't bother with pickles, but I like them on burgers, too (if that makes sense, and it probably doesn't). I also like bacon sometimes (it depends on my mood or hunger level).

As for all the other varieties, that's another story, and it often depends on the restaurant, etc. I'm learning (too slowly) that I'm really not into barbecue sauce and onion rings on burgers (especially from BK--yech).

Vegetables must go on the top. Cheese can go on the meat or bun. Ideally, the bun is toasted or at least warmed.

When my mother makes burgers, by the way, she puts the cheese on the bottom bun and the meat on the top bun to serve it. It drives me nuts. I always have to pick the meat up and put it on top of the cheese.

my city doesn't offer a terribly exciting standard for burger toppings. as far as i know, burgers generally include lettuce, tomato, raw onion, american/cheddar cheese, with condiments and pickle spears on the side.

however, my dad's special burger was pretty exciting. my dad would go all out when he was allowed to make burgers. This meant a pretty thick (maybe an inch) patty done to med/med well, slice of pan-fried spam (fried hard and crispy), couple slices of bacon, american cheese, and an oozy fried egg, all dressed with mayo and ketchup. there might have been some red leaf lettuce involved as well. they were incredible, and my mom would be sorely pissed that he fed us such amazing crap.

edited to correct tense

A burger I put together for a friendly pizza burger throwdown we did this past summer:

http://wildbillsfoodthoughts.blogspot.com/2008/10/pizza-burger-throwdown-results.html

Sauteed mushrooms
Pepperoni
Roasted garlic marinara sauce
Ground sausage in the burger
Fresh mozzarella
Red onion
Tomato
Basil
on a Whole Wheat pizza round.

Ketchup, mustard, sharp cheddar or swiss, dill pickle, tomato, raw onion, a dash of A1... Heinz chili sauce in lieu of the ketchup if I have any.

If this is a repeat of an earlier post, sorry about the duplication.

My ideal Burger will be set-up as follows----Toasted Bun, Burger (or two , if relatively thin) Usually the 1/2 lb patty is as large as I want.  Burger on the bottom, mild cheddar or American cheese (optional), Onion- grilled or raw...I like lots of Onion. Several slices of medium crispy Bacon. The Maple-flavored Costco thick cut works the best for me. Slices of red tomato. Thick & sweet BBQ sauce KC Masterpiece or similiar.

I am very particular about my hamburgers, especially the ones I fix at home.
1st- the bun, large sesame bun, lightly toasted.
2nd- the order of the condiements is very important.  Bottom bun, brown mustartd, sweet onion, dill pickle slices.  Burger topped with swiss cheese, large slice of tomato, leaf lettuce, mayo.

OMG, what a mess of a burger Mar had when Woody's was open.  Her burger looked right down nasty!  I might have to stock up on chopped peanuts just so she won't miss the place too much.

My burger is built from the bottom up.....
Bun... mustard, meat patty, cheese, (in no particular order for the veggies) lettuce, onions, pickles, tomato... bun.

At work on Fridays we always order burgers for lunch and it's  amusing to see who wants what on theirs.  It ranges anywhere from naked to with everything.  I like just about anything on a burger as long as it's not drenched in any kind of condiment.  I just can't do one oozing and dripping with stuff running out of it all over the place.

I watched Food Wars on the Travel Channel and one of their segments was on the Jucy and Juicy Lucy in the Twin Cities.  Sure did look good to me except I would have added lettuce, tomato, onion and mayo.

I am a bit of a purist when I make burgers at home. The only toppings on mine are salt, pepper, American cheese, and bacon. I pan fry the party and then finish it with Worcestershire sauce. Let it rest a bit then assemble as above.

Assuming I control the arrangment and sequence of the additions to my sandwich, then I would build it as follows

Bottom half Bun toasted & buttered- One 1/4 lb beef patty -one slice Swiss cheese- thick slice grilled red onion- Second 1/4 lb beef patty- second slice of cheese-3 long thick slices applewood smoked Bacon cut to fit the size of the Burger (@6crossStrips) either A1 sauce/Tabasco Chipotle sauce on the toasted top half of the Bun.

Second choice- Bottom half Onion Roll Toasted and buttered-- 8 oz ribeye Medium-, grilled onions carmelized spread to cover meat, 4 oz Pastrami, hot but well-drained on the Beef, Swiss cheese on top then Brown Mustard on toasted Onion Roll Top.

(Sweet Tea + double Lemon = Arnold Palmer, please)
