RE: What Is Going On?

Most young people today have an interesting notion that they are entitled to "top money" from day one. No one should have to "pay their dues" or "work their way up". I'm not exactly sure where this idea took root and got encouraged, but it seems to be quite prevalent whereever you go. Since most fast food businesses are staffed by young people, who truly do not seem to care about what they are doing, it's not surprising that orders are mixed up and service is poor. Many young people will tell you right out.."they're not paying me enough to give good service!" There are certainly those who do work hard and try their best, but I think they get lost in the sea of "who cares" and eventually get discouraged themselves. So the business owner has little to choose from when they go to staff their restaurant, and I think no matter how good a product they might try to put out, if the people putting it together don't care, then you've lost from the start. Problem is, if you replace that staff with others, you'll just get more of the same, and you're right back to square one. I think the bigger question is..as adults what did we do, to give young people ideals like these? We are their parents..where did WE go wrong??

Can't recall the last time anyone has messed up my order at a drive through. All the places i have gone to here in Schertz and Universal City have been fine.I try to avoid eating fast food though I sometimes do like if I get off at 10:30 or 11:00 PM from TJMAXX and don't feel like making something. Then I go to Jack in the Box. They had an article in Sunday's paper about culinary schools and young people wanting to be chefs.Same thing Mack 184 said. The three chefs they interviewed said it is very hard work and yoy don't make these fabulous salaries like say Emeril unless you are very good and have been doing it for a long time. Guess in our family we were raised different than the young people of today.I'm 50 and my brother and sister are in their early 40s.We were taught the world didn't owe you anything, you want it,you have to get it yourself. You have to work hard to get anywhere in life.

quote:Originally posted by Easydog Why can't these idiots make change??/ Young high school girl yesterday @ McD'd---bill is $5.18, I give her a twenty and two dimes. Her pretty little head filled with a mindfull of mush, starts sighing and counting with her fingers and breathing through her mouth. Then after 30 seconds hands me 14$ and a handful of change. I'm thinking "It's not worth it" After driving away, I count out 87 cents. Interesting Math they teach in the Socialist Schools today huh? The only problem with that thought is that children in the Russian & Chinese schools have better math skills than american kids! Last year our youngest boy graduated from high school. He had excellent grades the entire time he was in school. But, when carefully asked about things any 18 year old ought to know, he has no clue. Books that were standard reading just 10 years ago are no longer read. One thing that I truly believe was a critical mistake, was allowing computers and calculators into the school room. You need to be able to find answers and do the work yourself. Not merely be smart enough to dump in the numbers and let a machine come up with an answer for you. I grew up in the kind of schools where the teaches smacked you on the knuckles with a ruler for counting on your fingers..you HAD to learn to do the work in your head. Of course these kids can't make change. They've never had to figure it out. Remember the grocery store before scanners? The checkers had to be able to calculate the single price of a can of beans priced at 3 for 87 cents! And they did it quickly and correctly. Do this with a teen-ager today and they would have a complete melt-down. Most simply couldn't do it. My 19 year old spent 3 years in high school and got good grades, unfortunately he did not receive an education.

Well now folks, I have to agree with Mack184. A part of my job is dealing with juveniles. I am appalled at the fact that so many of them can't read or write. These kids are graduating from high school this way! And heaven forbid that they work at menial jobs! Mom & Dad give them a good care, money, & whatever they want, they don't NEED to work. My youngest son could have gone to college on a football scholarship, but chose not to. As he once told me, the football players in his coaching class could usually kick a ball farther than he could, but they couldn't read! People used to have pride in their jobs. Not so now. And the language problem is disgusting. One gets tired of dealing with people who don't speak English!! They probably don't know what some of these foods are. OK I am off my soapbox Thank you for letting me vent!! Judge Lady

Hence why I never order from the drive-thru window. I always go inside and get my order "to go" if I don't want to eat in the restaurant. And about cashiers not being able to make change -- kids these days can't add in their heads anymore, calculators and cell phones (yes, cell phones) do it for them. ~Jessica

Well, it happend again. Good God, don't I ever learn. Went to KFC yesterday to pick up some honey bbq wings for my son. I ordered them at the drive-thru and the girl ask me to repeat my order as she didn't hear me the first time. I said "I want a large order of honey bbq wings". Well after waiting for about 10 minutes (I forgot to check the order (being the fool that I am). Drove home about 10 miles and sure enough the order consisted of honey bbq boneless wings. Will this really @*##&! me off so I drive back and tell the same girl at the window that my order was wrong. She argued with me that I had asked for boneless wing (which I have never ordered these from KFC). She then yanked the box from my hand and said that the next order would take about 10 minutes and I need to pull thru the drive thru and wait. Well, after waiting for 20 minutes someone brought the winds to my car and after opening the box and checking there was a large order of wings but with no sauce. My daughter-in-law took them back in side and they just took the same wings and dipped them in sauce and handed them back to her without an apology or anything. Up until then I was having a great day and this really ruined it for me.
