What Is Your Favorite Western Movie?

Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. (Wish they would edit out the stupid bicycle scene) I have seen Shane more than any other. How the West was Won. Any western with the Duke or Jimmy Stewart. Wife likes Two Mules for Sister Sara and Hang Em High. Can't pass up Josey Wales...Russ

I watched a Rex Allen movie for the first time last night on TCM since I was a kid in the 50s. It was The Last Musketeer. Interesting to say the least. Rex Allen was from Arizona, was a singing cowboy, had a horse (forget the name) and evidently a dog, General, who was given to him in this movie. Needless to say there were several opportune singing scenes and Rex did ride off into the sunset with his horse and dog.

Wow. I love westerns, but I don't think I could name any one as a favorite. It would depend on my mood, I think.

For old westerns, The Ox Bow Incident.

My favorite classic western is The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. That was a hard one for me over Shane and The Searchers.

Revisionist, it's hard to beat Little Big Man.

Recent, two of my favorites are Tombstone and Unforgiven, very different films but both classic westerns nonetheless.

Best TV western? Lonesome Dove, hands down. Matter of fact I just watched it a couple weeks ago.

My favorite modern western is No Country for Old Men.

Tombstone is my all time favorite movie. I loved the way Val Kilmer portrayed Doc Holiday. I agree with Mosca that Lonesome Dove is hands down the best TV western. I also watched it a couple of weeks ago! As far as recent westerns that I've seen, I really liked the remake of True Grit.

Saw Cowboy and Aliens tonight. Don't think it willmake my all time favorite list of westerns. However Daniel Craig does have the "stuff" to do great westerns. Shane and 3:10 to Yuma both are at the top of my list As do both of the True Grit flicks, 2nd one was much closer to the book then the first one

I'm not much of a Western fan but I'll watch anything with JW in it. I really liked True Grit and resisted watching the remake. Somehow my GD talked me into taking her to see it. It too is a good movie, it has become a toss up of which version I prefer.

I love Westerns and I'm not sure I can name an overall favorite.  However, some that quickly come to mind are High Noon, The Fastest Gun Alive, Hombre, and Pale Rider.  I'm not much of a John Wayne fan, though I don't know why, and I hated spaghetti Westerns.  But I could endlessly watch movies with William Boyd, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, and my personal favorite, Allen "Rocky" Lane.  Westerns made after about 1985 leave me cold.

Don't know how many times I've seen them, but I still enjoy the John Ford-John Wayne cavalry trilogy of Fort Apache, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon & Rio Grande...the great scenery & supporting players a great bonus.

Jeremiah Johnson - I don't know why, I'm usually not a big western fan.
I never saw the original True Grit, but knew the story, and thought the remake was excellent.  Everything from the cinematography, plot, and not only just the star parts, but whoever did the casting for the movie, did a fantastic job of choosing actors for the smaller supporting or character roles.

MellowRoast, Pale Rider, definitely a great one!

TooPhat, Tombstone is also my favorite movie. But that's a moving target. It's more fair to say that it's the answer I give most often when asked that question!

Re:What Is Your Favorite Western Movie? 2011/08/01 13:36:09 (permalink)
"The Shootist".  It features John Wayne in a very Un-John Wayne-like role--a retired gunfighter dying of cancer, out to settle his last score.  Directed by Don Siegel who also directed the original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", "Dirty Harry", and "Escape From Alcatraz", among may others.

The film also features Lauren Bacall as the boarding house owner where Wayne shacks up while he plots his revenge, and a young adult Ron Howard as Bacall's son who mistakenly hero worships Wayne's character.

It's a very atypical Western, both for Wayne in particular, and as Western's go, in general.

    In no particular order:
    The Searchers
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence
Rio Bravo (Not the greatest movie, but I love Dean Martin in this one)
    Unforgiven
    Red River
    The Gunfighter
    High Noon
    Treasure of the Sierra Madre
True Grit (I'll take the remake over the original).

Thanks to all that have responded to this thread. You have been able to jog my memory of great westerns that would be able to be #1 on any list of best westerns. I set up a western movie night for this weekend for my kids, grand kids, employees, plus friends, and their kids and grand kids. Our local library had many of them available. Picked up Unforgiven, High Noon, Pale Rider and my copy of the newest True Grit, which I watched tonight. I decided I liked it more then the John Wayne version. But then, and I know that this is heresy, but John Wayne is not one of my favorite actors, except for the Quiet Man. On the food side, I am doing a pig and a quarter beef cooked in a pit. The sides will be provided by the attendees. So who know what they will show up with. Anyway thanks again for the the movie mentions.

Unforgiven (the Clint Eastwood movie, not The Unforgiven from 1960, with Burt Lancaster and directed by John Huston) may not be suitable for all ages. The Unforgiven is pretty good in its own right, though, and is suitable for all ages.

I'll second the thought that Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven" is not suitable for all ages.  It's an outstanding film--one of his best works--but unless those grandchildren are in their mid-teens, you might want to reconsider including it in your film fest.

The Searchers would definitely be my number one.  Hey, what other Western inspired a Buddy Holly song?  Close behind would be the previously mentioned Red River and Rio Bravo.  Not mentioned above and worthy of inclusion is My Darling Clementine and Stagecoach.

I would put almost all of the above nominee's on my list, with the John Wayne centered 'comedy' westerns--Mclintock, North to Alaska, etc near the top.
Same for the Eastwood Italian westerns... AND  Blazing Saddles !!   But I would put "Dances with Wolves" at the top of my list.
