My mom just about lost her mind when she discovered See's had stopped putting California Brickle in their Nuts and Chews assortment. So the next year I waited in line and had them make up a huge box of just California Brickle. She started opening the box, saying, "I don't know why you bothered. They don't even have..." she was struck speechless mid-grumble. She put that box away in her "stash" cupboard and we never saw it again.

Elise, Maybe our Mother's were related?? My Mom wasn't a grumbler, but she would stash her Christmas Sees Box, and proudly announce to me on our frequent phone exchanges that she was "being good and rationing herself ONE piece per day" The box would usually last until the Easter Box Arrived !!

When I was younger "Santa" used to give me the book of Lifesavers. I always loved getting them and on occasion my mom will get me a box of them at Christmas. Oh the memories.

I used to get the Lifesavers book for Christmas too! And I always felt gypped because I didn't consider Lifesavers "real" candy, like the Turtles or Almond Roca I'd often get in my stocking. And I can vouch for Ethel M's too..quality stuff! but you pay a quality price.

Peanut Butter Fudge 6 cups sugar 3 TBS cocoa powder 1 TBS Karo syrup 11/2 sticks butter or margarine 1 1/2 cans (12 oz?) evaporated milk 1 18 oz. jar of crunchy peanut butter 1 7oz. jar of marshmallow cream Using a rubber spatula, scoop peanut butter and marhsmallow from their jars into the same bowl, and set aside. In a large sauce pan, add butter, milk, sugar, cocoa, and Karo, mix well and stir over medium heat until mixture registers soft ball stage on candy thermometer. Working quickly, use an electric mixer on high, and blend marshmallow cream and peanut butter into fudge mixture. Pour onto a cookie sheet that has a 1 - 2" inch lip. When cool, cut in squares.

In California it aint Christmas if you don't have two or three boxes of See's under the tree. Sure today you can get See's just about anywhere but here in the Bay Area we know our See's Candy is coming from the original South San Francisco plant. Some how we feel it makes a difference and we locals never buy a pre-boxed assortment .... we will wait in line at one of their shops to have a cute senior gal dressed in white custom pack our Holiday candy Ohhh and by the way Dungeness Crab season opened 3 days ago so we Northern California folk are happier then a pig in mud ..left over turkey .... crab.and See's candy, if life gets any better I'll suspect a frame-up ................ Frank crab picture is from A. Sabella's Restaurant 2766 Taylor Street at Jefferson 3rd Floor San Francisco, CA 94133

Not to sound too Scrooge-like, but I was enjoying reading this post until I came across the word "gypped." This is an ethnic slur which should not go unchallenged.

Somewhere far far away in a cold Romanian forest a band of gypsies are sitting around there meager camp fire as the snows of Christmas winter begin to fall. Boris, the bands lead violinist picks up his instrument and plays the hunting melodies of Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody. Boris's violin music carries throughout the forest and out into the near Transylvanian villages, The villagers hear the violin music and are in fear that the gipsies are near, and that there stash of Lifesavers are in danger of falling into the hands of the nomads. So to hide there lifesavers from the gypsies they hurry down to the town library and begin to hollow out books into which they can hide there lifesavers. Hence to this day at Christmas time many a child will receive in their stocking a silver book filled with lifesavers and these children will ........ yes you guessed it, ....to honor this Gypsy folk tail, they all will feel GYPPED .....................

Those fancy-shmancy chocolate covered almonds that companies send out to people who they'll be doing business with. Pharmaceutical reps drop those off at our clinic. I also like those Belgian chocolates that are shaped like shells. You can get them at a reasonable price at HomeGoods. Homemade peanut brittle and peanut butter and chocolate fudge are lovely to receive. I have to finish all of it before the January diet begins.

I love See's too,but my personal favorite candy comes from a small place near Muncie,IN called Lowry's--still family owned. They only take orders from Easter to just after Thankgiving (too late for this year) I love their maple creams so much that I order a 1 lb. box just for moi! I really like it that there seems to be very little "wax" in their chocolate--just creamy chocolaty goodness. My Mom,Grandmothers,Aunts and Great Aunts spent the month between Thanksgiving and Xmas making all kinds of candies and fudge. Theirs was a labor of love and we all appreciated the hours spent at the stove. What great memories...

The two culinary items that I miss the most from my brief period living in California before returning to the East Coast are See's chocolates, and Peet's coffee. I am not the biggest fan in general of chocolate, but going into a See's store was a great experience; the scent was unbelievable, and the taste was even better! Same thing with Peet's Coffee; both scent and taste made Starbuck's and company seem inconsequential. I know that I can order both over the internet, yet the experience of going to their retail outlets was truly a experience for the senses. I envy people still in the Bay Area!

Hello All, I want to thank all who suggested See' Candy, I am going to order them for my 3 brothers for Christmas. If it is a great gift, I will be a hero. If not, well, I can blame Roadfood.com, lol. Seriously, thank you for giving me the gift of discovering See's candy. Take Care, Fieldthistle

Of course, to cool it down, all I have to do it set it out in my front room, which isnt heated for about 5 minutes to get it to set.. Ha Ha.. The cold temps here in Maine is good for something besides chilling wine and beer!
