What about truck graphics? Thu, 02/17/11 4:17 PM (permalink)
OK, so we are going to be driving from New Berlin, NY across this great land, then turning north through the Yukon, then home to Alaska with our mobile rig...

Along the way, where can we get a good deal on graphics wraps? Up here everything is about 20% to 50% more expensive than what you folks (except the Canadians) are used to paying so we are hoping to do a wrap while in the 48.

As you can see, we have a lot of real estate to cover - so price is an issue. Where do we wanna get this done?

Well friend...I figure if you brought the goodies from Alaska and kept the "New York Pizzeria & Restaurant" on for a few days...we could have some fundraiser!! Roll outta Staten Island fully wrapped with platinum spinners.

What is a ballpark quote from Alaska?

Quote on a truck wrap? I don't remember, I just recall my wife having this stunned look on her face...something like 2,000 per side, per vehicle? All I know is the conversation ended abruptly...
I'd love to come out to the city, I used to work for a fancy advertising agency down on Washington Square. Depends on where we need to go to buy all the cooking stuff that's going inside the trailer - right now it only has pipes, wires, lights and a fancy commercial hood...oh, and FRP walls, 4" of insulation, and diamond-plate floor.  Thank god for insulation - it has been -50 BELOW ZERO here lately...

I know a very good company that does an awesome job. Every kind of wrap. But it does not get cold like that...here. I know with race car wraps  it is about heat. I have a racing expert who would know (also a member of Roadfood) but he is sleeping. If you saw the battles we had a few years ago....you would know why I will not be that girl...to call right now. He was just about set to come get me...and told me so.

Gladly we moved on from that. I thought it was funny.

By tomorrow morning you should have quotes up the gazoo from new members of Roadfood....with a deal for you!!

Can't be like a credit card to a fat head. That I know.

a wrap on a 20ft step van would cost roughly 4-5k in my parts. Wraps are VERY expensive, detailed, and concider that you are wrapping your entire vehicle in vinyl or whatever. Its gonna cost alot of money.

CC is TWD's estimate of 4-5K about the same as in the NY Metro area?  Plugging number into my business plan.

                    Cheers,

PS- Would have PM'd this to TWD, but since under 30 posts can't yet.    Thanks so much for all the great info and photos on your build.  It moved me from buying a rig to building one.

Somewhat like a tattoo (I do not know this personally) you can always find one for like $40...but you have to live with it. You hope it does not bleed fade  look like a hot mess or get infected. You save some bucks by being in the neighborhood...as opposed to having expert service come to you.

There are struggling starving artists at many garages working on motorcycles...and you can find other creative options in a new developing market.

There is always business charm & business barter. First quote should never be the last number written in stone. Never. Unless it is a company that does not need your business or want to cement itself as THE place for food trucks to get the wrap...so they can be off to the races.

It's a big job and plenty of work. It's also a big billboard that would look mighty fine in a showcase to promote and attract  expert quality workmanship to  soooo many other food trucks. Two hands one face....wash.

Any idea how well the material holds up in extreme cold? Winter months are average 20 to 30 below zero, with occasional 50 to 70 below...I'm guessing the adhesive would be the critical factor, more than the material itself?

That certainly is a considered factor in your case. I believe SW gives a 5 year full warranty....but no idea as far as fine print dealing with extreme temperature conditions. It must be excellent to take the heat of race cars...but with race cars there is not a 5 year factor.

I have had logo's that are 3' square on a trailer made from the wrap material for 2 years + now and no fadeing or peeling issues so far. Its good stuff. I know some of the old wraps were not UV stable in the beginning but I think they are getting smarter. It gets pretty cold here in CT so temp swings should not be an issue. They do recommend staying away from automatic car washes in the summer because of the whipping action of the brushes. I have been through auto washes with my truck and no troubles.

Just our two cents. If you stop along the way to have graphics installed then get home and have some kind of problem with the graphics what are you going to do?

Good point...we just discussed it a bit, and figured it's more a matter of the price differential. If it's 30% more in Alaska, I'd rather buy it in the 48 and take my chances.

Yep make sure it will stay on with the temps we have up here ,I know I have to replace most of out lettering and decals on our tour vans every spring with the 5 yr vinyl they use because they just fall off at -30
