Martinson's is now owned by Canadian firm Mother Parker's Tea & Coffee Inc. The Martinson's brand was bought and sold a number of times. I have to take a look and see if that coffee roasting plant just off Route 46 is Palisades Park, NJ is still operational. You could always smell coffee passing through there. You can get Martinson's coffee in NY/NJ supermarket chains such as ShopRite.

Yep, it's still there...but I doubt it's the same coffee I remember from 40+ years ago...and since I got on this Gevalia kick,I'm not going to experiment.

Cafe du Monde Chicory

French Market is good, too.

I love the taste of Chicory in my coffee.
People up here look at me like I'm crazy. Oh, well...they don't know what they're missing!

Eight O' Clock makes some reasonably priced whole bean flavored coffees. With recent price increases, I've downshifted to the local blend in the S-central US--Cains, pre-ground. It's not too awful if you keep it in the freezer after opening it.
Cafe du Monde once in a while makes a nice break from "standard" coffee. Vietnamese markets often sell it for less than other grocery stores.

Whole Foods Organic Pacific Rim Blend--whole beans that I grind just before drip-brewing it. Strong, dark, rich, with a slight "chocolatey" finish. My favorite, by far.

Got to have my Starbucks. Buy the beans (the dark roast) and grind for each pot. But, I discovered the greatness of Trader Vics ground beans in Glen Ellyn, IL several years ago. Was comparatively inexpensive and tasted as rich as Starbucks.

Currently, working on A&P 8 O'Clock beans and grinding. I use Gevalia beans when my shipment comes in and switch between Starbucks Breakfast Blend and whatever I come across in between! Love some hot java in the early am. Judy

I orderedthis coffee bean roaster the other day and am looking forward to taking the next step in my quest to making the perfect cup. It comes with 1/2 pound each of eight different green coffee beans. I suspect it won't be long before I'm reporting a new "brand" to this thread. pb

Currently, we're drinking a breakfast blend from a vendor of fair trade / certified organic coffee. We've been going this route for a year now. The coffee is exceptionally good, and more money goes to the actual coffee grower instead of the corporation.

I usually rotate between Starbuck's Espresso Roast Blend, Community Coffee with Chicory, and a Peruvian whole bean coffee that I buy in Bulk at HEB. Don't know what I'd do without my morning java!

Flying Goat Coffee Roasters is within walking distance of my front door (Healdsburg CA) They roast mostly shade grown free trade from all over the globe every day. I buy it whole bean and grind it "to order" in my Kitchen Aid burr grinder set to grind for my French Press. Its pretty freaking heavenly.

So many old brands mentioned here...Martnson's Folger..etc...old timers like me out there...are these old brands, still the same coffee..the same blend over the decades? Is Maxwell House today, the Maxwell House of 40-50 years ago??..or like so many products, have they been cheapend?? Anyone taste a difference, or have any info?

I don't think anyone from a coffee company is going to post the straight scoop here. I do remember that when the Hoboken, NJ plant of Maxwell House was supplying this area back in the day, my mother noticed (negative) product changes at a time when there was a steep runup of coffee prices. I passed the old Martinson's plant in Palisades Park, NJ the other day. The Savarin sign is still on the building, but the space is occupied by warehouses and other types of businesses. People's tastes and pocket books also change. Honestly, I don't have any long term memory of the taste of a particular coffee.

I seem to remember growing up with Maxwell House...and liking it as a young adult...not today. So maybe you're right, David...maybe my tastes have matured...but still I wonder, if the blend has changed.

Hey Lee, just a side note, I've had Gevalia coffee several times (I order it when I need a new pot, then discontinue it), and it's not bad - but the Martinson is equally as good a cup, and much less expensive. In fact, it regularly goes on sale at Shop Rite and some other local markets for as little as $1.99 per can, if you belong to their 'valued shopper' program

If I could only buy one brand for the rest of my life, it would Louisiana's Community brand. It's better than Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, or Chock full o'Nuts.

I only occasionally drink coffee at home but my 18 year old daughter(who has been drinking coffee since she was 2)loves either A&P 8 o'clock coffee or Dunkin Donuts. I buy both in whole bean and she grinds it fresh each time.

8 O'Clock is a great coffee! It's what my parents grew up drinking. It's what I buy if I can't find Community.

I remember all 3 of the A & P brands. I didn't drink coffee in my youth but I could have stood next to the grinding machine all day, it smelled so good.

I mentioned that I roast my own beans with Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe or Harrar my favorite beans but I got a great deal for my work coffee. Senseo has/had a great deal offering a machine, 18 pods, a container and a bunch of coupons all for the $15 shipping and handling charge. I believe the web link is/was www.sharesenseo.com The coffee that came with is excellent imho and I'm pretty fussy. So far I found the best deal on pods at Amazon.com but I'm still searching. Delivered, they come out to 29 cents a cup which seems very reasonable for a great cup that even has a crema on top.

Been using Gevalia Breakfast Blend and Cafe Greco for the last 18 months or so. Just switched to their Signature Blend and Dark Roast, all whole bean. I let the coffee experts describe the flavors and just enjoy it. We only sweeten with raw honey.
