I am still waiting to purchase this fine Hi-Talian beauty!

Hey Joe, you get bugs in your teeth when you drive that with your head out the sunroof? The new Fiat 500 will be available here very soon sold by everyone's favorite Italian car company...Chrysler.

Hello all,
I love Joe Rogos car , think it would be a big hit in Northwest PA.
My favorites were my first a 72 Ford LTD Station Wagon I had in High School . We  regularly put 10 or 11 teenagers in it to party around town .
Think it got 9 miles to the gallon
Presently my favorite is my 2000 Chevy Impala LS that I still own and it has about 208000 miles on it

My first car was a turquoise circa 1960.  My dad's bank had repossessed it, and I loved that little thing.  My brother destroyed it when I was away at college by running over a curb and breaking the front axle.  My husband and I bought a '65 silver blue Mustang 2+2...very cool.  Sold it when it became impractical for 2 babies.  We drove pretty pedestrian cars for many many years until I got my first red Miata in 1990.  I had 2 more and then moved up to a BMW Z4.  I had 3 of those, and then retirement set in and I know they were no longer affordable.  Don't know how practical they were, but I really miss the cool factor.  Back to a red Miata and I do love it...so impractical...it will no doubt be in the garage 2 months this winter, but man, on those wonderful spring and summer days, there's nothing like a iittle convertible.

Did it have the genuine woodgrain applique on the sides?

My wife's parents also had a '72 Ford wagon and apparently my mother-in-law would use it as a battering ram if the streets hadn't been sufficiently cleared of snow.

My parents had a '67 Country Sedan wagon but it was gone 5 years before I got my license, replaced by a 1976 Plymouth Volare wagon (one of the more recalled vehicles in history IIRC).  Speaking of being useful in high school, it had lockable storage compartments that extended down into the quarter panels behind each rear wheel and it just so happened each compartment could neatly hold a plastic bag filled with ice and...cartons of milk.  Yeah, that's it.  Milk.

When I graduated from high school in 1977, I bought a 1975 Chevy Monte Carlo.  Cream color with a burgundy half vinyl roof, burgundy interior and rally wheels.  AM/FM with a factory 8-Track tape player  Nothing special under the hood, just a 350, but this car was sweet.

Not sure which one I'd call my favorite, but I have no problem picking the worst. It was the '77 Dodge Aspen, the first new car that I ever owned. The Aspen was the "twin sister" to the Plymouth Volare that Brad mentioned, and both cars were among the worst pieces of crap ever to come off of an American assembly line. Mine was three years old when I traded it in, and I got next to nothing for it.

Wow, to pick a favorite is like picking a favorite child

My first 1978 Datsun 210, that car ran until the floor fell out of it.
My first truck 2005 Chevy Silverado Extended Cab, still looks great and handles well and has 389,000 miles.

My favorites to own over time

1938 Chevrolet Master Special
or
1946 Hudson Pick Up Truck

There have been many others but those 4 are my tops.

The last three cars I have purchased have all been Mazda 3's. My daughter is driving the '05, I am currently driving the '10 and I love it...just big enough, quick and agile, funky looks...Drove the '04 in a 2 day performance drivers school at Watkins Glen...way too much fun.

Well, since you ask: a '69 Dodge Charger. Drove it from around '75 to '87. They're basically unfindable now. As unusable junk they go for 20 grand. Do I wish I still had it? Is this forum about food?

Holy Crap! I earlier posted about my favorite cars I owned (3 VW Beetles in the 70's). Then in 1979 I inherited a 1977 Aspen (Brown yet) when my uncle died and left me his car in his will.

It was only 2 yrs old with only about 10,000 miles on it, so I gave up my 6 year old VW with 75,000 miles on it. Worst mistake ever! Worst car ever! Plus, as a still single 30 year old, it had zero, I repeat, ZERO, sex appeal.

Somehow my girlfriend at the time tolerated this change of cars (jokingly nicknaming it "The Car" after a movie that was out at the time).  Two years later I married her, at least in a little part because she was the type of girl  who would  take in stride the fact that her boyfriend traded a VW Beetle for an Aspen. First thing I did was get rid of that godawful Aspen for her sporty Datsun (we were in Brooklyn, we didn't need two cars).

Thanks for the memory!

Boy, Chrysler wins the prize in the "What were they thinking" contest. They had the Dart/Valiant that was dowdy but unbreakable, and didn't listen to the old maxim "If it ain't broke don't fix it".
Years ago I saw an old guy with a 1st generation Valiant station wagon - I asked him if he'd like to sell it and he just laughed and said 'No way!' - that's the attachment I'm looking for with a car.
Back in the mid-80s I bought a clapped-out '61 Bug with a folding sunroof - it was a massive pain to keep running (parts are not as universal as they'd have you believe) but I did enjoy it when the weather was nice and the roof was open. Helped that I lived on a hill and could do a rolling jump-start.

I really don't know much about cars---put gas in the tank and make sure the tires aren't flat and away we go. Anything important that isn't working will light up an icon on the dashboard.  Love this new stuff.

Under the hood are things I don't recognize since the Model A of my "yuth" was sold for $75.00----

But, I know when I like something, even things I don't understand----
Women for instance------so I have decided my 1988 Ford Victoria Station Wagon with all the bells and whistles was my favorite of all time.  150,000 miles with no problems.

1986 Jeep CJ-7... lift kit, big tires, hardcover with tinted windows. Total chick magnet. The whole drivetrain went and I couldn't afford to replace it, so I sold it for what I owed on the loan. Had some great times in that thing.

Hey Mayor, good taste in a car. My 1st Toyota was a '96 Avalon. I've since had an 05 and currently drive an 08 Avalon. I really like the Avalon. When I drove to Nashville in Sept. I averaged 30.5 mpg on the freeway. This in a car big enough for me to sit in the back seat.

1971 "British Racing Green" Kharmann-Ghia convertible:  First car I ever bought new.  Kept it 10 years and sold it for exactly what I paid for it:  $3000.

When I was living at home my Mom had a 1959 Plymouth Sport Fury (white) and my Dad had a 1966 Pontiac Grand Prix (maroon).  Both were fine automobiles but they weren't mine.

My favorite was a 1961 Mercedes 220 SEb coupe I purchased while in grad school for $795.

Only changing the oil, I drove it another 100,000 miles and sold it five years later for $2,000!

Loved my '67 candy apple red Mustang....Also had a '63 Plymouth Valiant..loved that fake continental wheel!!!

leethebard,
Our 1st new car was a candy apple red Mustang.  Alas, in 1968, I was rear-ended & our Mustang was totaled.  Our next car was a Plymouth Roadrunner(the horn actually went beep-beep!), maroon with black top, 383 engine, 4 speed Hurst shifter with mag wheels, black leather interior.  Beautiful muscle car & I shudder to think how fast my husband actually drove it when I wasn't in it !!
Then in 1970, my husband got a sales job,we became parents for the 1st time & we traded in the Roadrunner for the 1st of 2 Plymouth Dusters. , the 2nd a Gold Duster, both with slant six engines.  What workhorses the Dusters' were,my husband put 200,000+ miles on both & I then drove them as my mom cars for several years.  Love those Dusters!!

Re:What car you owned was your favorite? 2010/12/05 15:03:12 (permalink)
It's a toss up on this one. The '65 Mustang was ok but not the thrill I thought it would be. My two choices on favorite were my first car, a 1962 Dodge Dart. I got it when my aunt passed away in 1971. At that point it had 18,000 original miles on it. As a "little old lady's" car, I didn't think much of it when I got it. I took it over to a friend's who was a Mustang Club of Van Nuys member (I was an honorary member---the only one without a Mustang). When we looked under the hood, we saw it had a 318 engine with a Holley 4-barrel carburetor. We were impressed, but still laughed at the push-button transmission. Then we took the car out for a test. It was fast and powerful. Eventually we were talking with another friend who had a hopped up Mercury Comet, 4 on the floor and a huge hood scoop on a 289. He said my car could not possibly beat his. A few days later, a group of us went to a back straightaway road that was marked for a quarter mile. He revved his engine and I revved mine. When the starter's arm dropped, he did his thing with the clutch and shifter. I had my engine revved up in neutral and just pushed the button into gear. It immediately took off and I punched the next button into drive. The only way I saw him was through my rear mirror, finishing 3 car lengths ahead. No more comments about a "little old lady's" car!
My other favorite was my '94 Mercury Capri. It was my first "little red sports car", a neat body on a Mazda Miata chassis. I had a lot of fun with that car. I'd keep the top down for weeks at a time. It was especially nice driving on PCH or Topanga Canyon, nice windy roads. With the retractable headlamps and the tonneau cover that folded down over the top when it was down, it looked like a smaller version of a Corvette. Ah, what fun it was!

I may have a new favorite. I just bought this 2003 Subaru Baja yesterday. This model was only sold for four years from 2003 to 2006 and they are getting harder to find in good condition. It is basically an Outback with a truck bed instead of a station wagon back. This was a want, not a need. At the time when they were sold I actually needed a full-size pickup. Now I don't, but I don't want to give up a long string of always owning a pickup truck. I also don't need it for trips. It will just be my run around town retirement vehicle that I will put on 5-6,000 miles per year on it and I can still haul landscaping purchases.

PS. I will always need AWD vehicles. See that uphill driveway in the background? It now has a foot of new snow on it.

I am bringing an old thread back to add my latest Truck to the List. Photos will be added when I take delivery in a couple of days--

Just a small item, but a big deal for Janet and I. Today we signed for a new Mayor-Mobile ! Yep, The Dark Red Ford Supercrew is at the 99,000 mile post, and would take a $3k drop in book value if it crossed 100k, so Jan and I decided to get another of these wonderful trucks to continue the tradition. Our new Truck is Dark Blue over a Silver base color. It is another Supercrew, and a 4x4 also.
I was suprised to find that I have to move the driver's seat a bit forward to comfortably sit behind the wheel...They have added several inches of 'belly-clearance" and also additional headroom to make this the roomiest truck I have ever driven. BTW, this is my 5th (in a row) Ford truck, and the 3rd Supercrew. We have been very pleased with our previous vehicles and hope this one will continue the tradition.
No Topper in store for the back of this one. We may do a flat-top but not until we see how much use we make of the bed. The new rear seat arrangement allows flat storage on the floor in the back seat area, making a very large dog resting area and grocery hauling space...The rear seat fold totally out of the way making the space very useable.
Now if I can learn how to use "SYNC" properly to make my cell-phone a useable tool on the road !!!
We take delivery Wed evening. Photos to follow.

Congrat to the Mayor with his new ride.  I am certainly envious.  His is huge with a four door.

I guess my favorite is a 1975 Red Vette that I bought new.  I wish I still had it.  I now have a smaller sports car which is a black power retracable hardtop Miata.  Great fuel mileage and runs like a rabbit but does not give the thrill of the 1975 Vette.

Mayor, I cannot wait to see the pics of the new ride.
