I'm from Trenton, New Jersey originally, which lots of people (from North Jersey) consider South Jersey (I always thought it was Central, myself). My family calls it "spaghetti sauce," but I know lots of people who call it "tomato gravy."

I grew up calling moms sauce she served over spagetti "spagetti sauce" but gravy to me is what you serve on thanksgiving with turkey and mashed potatoes.
but then i discovered marinara.
and bolognese .
Which one of these is " spagetti sauce?" both, i guess....
Well... it doesn't really matter, all are good no matter what they're called!
Hey by the way where is it that they serve chili on spagetti instead of "spagetti sauce"? ( and do they call it spagetti sauce(!) not chili....???????)

i grew up around enogh italians that i think i know the difference between gravy and sauce. gravy was made on sundays and and has meat in it pork beef and veal cooked for hours. sauce is a marinara. cooked quickly for a lunch or snack. here are some of the other foods i learn to pronounce corectly. muzz(mozzarella)sausee`ge sausage) isagne(lasagne) kalamarrr (calamari) mana gutt(manacotti)
i beleive it is two words. pra-shoot (proscutto)
