What do you like on top of ice cream?

As I sit here eating a Nutty Buddy and thinking how much I like the flavor of peanuts and vanilla ice cream, I was wondering what toppungs the Roadfooders like to garnish their ice cream with?

Happy Summer!

Only one out of two toppings. I'm not a big sundae guy and do not like piles of stuff on my ice cream. Hot fudge, and if that is not an option HErsheys syrup. ONLY.

I like whipped cream on occasion, and if the ice cream is the right flavor, malted milk powder. Hot fudge I sometimes get into, but mostly I can take it or leave it. No butterscotch. Sometimes a few chopped nuts. I've been wondering what almond butter would taste like in cream, whether it might be suited to some particular flavor combination, though this is more of a "mix-in" idea.

For me, nothing beats whole roasted cashews or roasted pecan halves sprinkled over vanilla ice cream.

Hot fudge, or Heath Toffee topping. Or U-bet. Or...

A few weeks ago, I made a pan of chocolate brownies. The ones that went uneaten (can you imagine that?) got crumbled up and put into a plastic container. They then became the topping for plain vanilla ice cream. Absolutely yummy, and a million times better than ordinary "cookies and cream" flavor.

I usually end up buying plain vanilla and experimenting with peanut butter, bananas, etc. ...sometimes, even coffee beans!

    More ice cream!

I'm also partial to Kahlua. Hot fudge is good, too, if it's high quality and really hot. So are cashews and even peanuts. Marshmallow. Pineapple. Caramel. Fresh, crushed strawberries. Hmmmm, wait a minute. What ISN'T good on ice cream?

Oh I forgot one really good one for vanilla (or vanilla-based) ice cream: dry expresso grounds (Medaglia D'Oro was always our choice.) Unused, of course. A little crunchy, great flavor, really works beautifully. Good on coffee ice cream, too, naturally. Probably chocolate as well, though the taste might get a little muddled (I don't usually eat chocolate ice cream, though...)

One of my favorites has always been, a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream with just a bit of cinnamon .

Another taste treat is to mix some vanilla ice cream with orange soda in a blender. It's a 50/50 bar you can drink.

Hot fudge on vanilla or butter pecan ice cream. Maple syrup on vanilla and FRESH strawberries on vanilla would run a verrrry close second.

I worked at a Baskin Robbins for most of the eighties, and made more than my share of sodas. The best way I can find to duplicate them at home is as follows.

First you need a club soda. Try to find one that’s low or no sodium.
Next you will need a syrup. Chocolate is the easiest to find if you want another flavor mix equal part sugar and water with a touch of artificial flavoring.
And finally you’ll need some ice cream, I recommend using Vanilla.

In a 16 oz glass mix 1oz of syrup with 1 teaspoon of ice cream and ½ oz to 1 oz of soda, until blended.
Add approx 12 oz of soda to mixture, stirring gently.
The float one or two scoops of Ice Cream into the soda.
    Enjoy

Wow...........reading this reminded me of one of my favorite desserts in a restaurant! It is called Dark Brazilian Snow and is ice cream mixed with freshly ground coffee beans. It is served at Bern's Steakhouse in Tampa, Fl and is so good that it is the only dessert that I have ever ordered there as I cannot resist it.

When I was younger we would go to Friendly's Ice Cream shop and I would have a Swiss Chocolate Almond Sundae, it had vanilla, chocolate and coffee ice cream topped with swiss chocolate syrup and whipped cream and almonds. I don't think they make them any more, to bad beacuse they were so good.
I also like to have a good rich vanilla ice cream and hot fudge. Some time I will take marshmallow fluff and add a LITTLE water to it and add that on top of the hot fudge. I rather have whipped cream but I don't alway have it in the frig.

The Jigger Shop in Mt Gretna, PA (near Lancaster) serves a sundae called the Sawdust Sundae - ice cream w/ hot fudge nuts and malt powder - along with the whipped cream and cherry. Outstanding and a neat summer road food place.

They still make the swiss almond sundaw at my local friendly's! I love the reese's pieces sundae as well.

But I really love cake with my ice cream. The mixing of the two textures is awesome. Most ice cream cakes are all ice cream. I would love to find a places that actually uses real cake in their ice cream cakes.
