Contains Cool Whip, coconut, pineapple and mini-marshmallows? Maybe more stuff. I had some at work yesterday and it was really good.

              Hi All,
long time lurker, first time poster.
Yes, that is the recipe for ambrosia salad. Additional add-ins can include maraschino cherries and bananas and mandarin oranges.. My family likes this version.

Usually this is the only salad that I will try in a Pot Luck situation. It is one of my favorites. I never saw nuts in the recipe til I saw this post. I put walnuts in Waldorf salad but not any other salads.

I have listened to the hot dog wars, the barbeque purists, the mayo debates... now it is my turn.

THAT IS NOT AMBROSIA Clasic ambrosia is oranges, coconut and sugar. No creamy type or crunchy ingredients,

There. Now I feel better. (I hope y'all can see me smiling. This is not a true rant!)

Whew. Now I can answer MikeS. That sounds like 5 cup salad:
                          1c coconut
                          1 c tiny marshmellows
                          1 c fruit cocktail
1 c mandarin oranges or pineapple chunks
                          1 c sour cream

This is really good and quick, but it does need about an hour in the refrigerator before serving.

With the pistacio pudding mix, we always called it Martian Salad.

                            5 cup salad (maybe 6 or 7...)
the main thing about these salads is the fruit has to be drained VERY WELL.  I used to drain the fruit overnight in a colander in the fridge, then next day make the salad and let that chill 4 or 5 hours more.

I did try pearliewog5's recipe sans nuts and it was very good.

I'll try it again in a couple weeks with sour cream and see how I like that.

My Georgia grandmother added sour cream. It was vomitacious. Every time she made it, she would tell me it was made with whipped cream, then say "Go ahead and just try some, dahlin." For some reason, she thought if I just tried some I'd magically begin to like sour cream. She was wrong, bless her heart.
Still don't like the stuff, lo these many years since her passing.

my brother's mother-in-law calls it "pineapple fluff" which also has choppped pecans, cream cheese in it.   She brings it some years for my brother's Thanksgiving dinner.

Something else she does with pineappple is a "pineapple casserole" served hot, cracker crumbs, and grated sharp cheddar, are some of the ingredients, which I think is also very good.

mbrookes you are of course correct.  Old Southern ambrosia doesn't have anything creamy in it, but I think the name probably got borrowed for the church-lady-basement version that has Cool Whip in it.
