These Internet "Best of" contests for a prize always wind up with stuffed ballot boxes. What often happens is that the owner of the Tomaine Diner is computer saavy and knows how to get people to vote for his diner early and often.  They use those software tools spammers use to pass bogus IP addresses and computer info to the contest site.

Budd Lake Diner in Budd Lake. Once drove down from Milford CT at 3AM just for some cheese/gravy fries and a taylor ham, egg and cheese. And I'd do it again!

I think these polls, because they, by their very nature, ask open ended questions, become more of a "name a so-and-so" ... that's why McDonalds winds up winning the burger category.  It is the very syndrome that keeps me from asking, say the hotel front desk clerk, for advice.

Meanwhile, good luck on your survey.

Unfortunately, most of my favorite New Jersey diners have changed, and I have still not found a replacement. Tom Sawyer (near the Fashion Square Mall) burned down, and was rebuilt a bit more upscale, Coach House (near Riverside Square Mall) has dropped quality and have apparently replaced their competent staff with people with the level of competence of the Three Stooges, Route 17's Suburban Diner makes too many mistakes, and Route 17's Tiffany was taken over a few years back by people from a country where things like basic cleanliness are considered to be a strange affectation. The Chit Chat Diner on Essex Avenue in Hackensack (near Route 17) shows some promise, although somebody should inform them that, for most people, the recipe for French Toast calls for eggs and that if dinner comes with dessert, they should not bring the bill and wait for the customer to inquire about it.

I agree with other posters about the 'iffy' credentials/results that come with Best Of polls.  But that doesn't stop me from putting in my two cents worth about NJ diners on Roadfood!
My local favorite will always be the Colonial Diner in Lyndhurst - they've recently completed a renovation that maintained the classic diner look, and the food has stayed basically the same.  However, now the diner is attracting large families, and people who previously would have never  stepped foot in a 'greasy spoon'.  I miss the small diner feel, but I am happy for the owners success - they deserve it.
I also love the Blairstown Diner - the food was iffy for many years, but has really improved in the past 5 years or so.

Rt 22 east lebannon/whitehouse nj "The Spinning Wheel" a Great New Jersey diner with Great Food Friendly staff and Always clean as well as some beautiful scenery from the outside, The Favorite spot for most of the Bedminster NJ area residents for years now. Closer to us is Loukas last american diner on rt 22 east in Branchburg which is the last place you will ever see any of us, terrible food, inexperienced unfriendly staff and rude manager/owners not even a Thank You when you pay the bill.
What happend to pride in pleasing your customers and making sure they are happy with their entire dining experience including saying thank you !

Great first post. Welcome to Roadfood.
As an ex-New Yawker, I miss NJ diners real bad. Nothing like them exists in Dallas. Nothing, dammit!

One place never mentioned (very close to Brownstone in Jersey CIty)...Flamingo.

Never much pretty place atmosphere to it ( re-opening as City Diner) and many peeps would be afraid of the vibe. Oh well.

    As far as food...

I always liked The Lexington Diner in Clifton or the Pompton Diner in Cedar Grove. My all-time favorite is closed The Kless Diner in Irvington, I miss that place.

Mustache Bill's Diner in Barnegat Light, NJ.  Winner of a James Beard Award and also featured on DDD, it's the real thing.  Only open for breakfast and lunch and it's cash only.

Used to love Country Club Diner in Voorhees on 561.  Was back last month and it is closed.  The cashier at ACME across the street told me it closed down several months ago, she used to go there too.  The chain restraints seem to be taking their toll on South Jersey Diners.
