What kind of sausage do you use?

Every day I have a customers or two asking for sausage. I'm trying to figure a brand to get that I can sell for pretty cheap. I don't eat sausage myself so I don't know what's a popular or good one. I do all my supply shopping at costco and walmart. Can you guys recommend sausages that you get from one of those two shops? The only ones I've seen at costco are the long tubes that curls up into a spiral. Do you guys use that kind and cut them to size? I also need something that can be boiled as that's all I'm able to do on my cart...if you have a link to the brand or type that would be even better.

Are you talk about a traditional type sausage dog? If so, the Hillshire Farms varieties are great. I use the all beef sausage dog that I buy from Walmart. They come 6 to a pack and sell for $2.99. They have all sorts of flavors, chedder, spicy, brats, etc. all pre cooked. The all beef ones hold up well to water cooking. Just dont over cook them to hot because the casing will split open. I get them right to the boiling point then put them in a simmer type water temp to hold them. I charge .75 to a dollar more for these than I do the hot dogs I sell.

Yes the regular traditional type sausage dogs. I need something that will fit in the costco mayfair buns. I'm trying to avoid two types of buns. Thanks for the info. I've seen that kind. I wasn't sure if thats the sort people were talking about.

I've tried all the Hillshire sausages(pre-cooked) and like the Bratwurst the best. The most flavorful and works good with onions and peppers.

Their is all kinds of "sausages" (Italian, hot, polish, brats, white, smoked, etc) so no telling what any one person was talking about or asking for. The plain ol all beef sausage I carry fits the bill for most everyone that ask for a "sausage". The Hillshire ones fit in a regular style hot dog bun just great. I prefer that so I dont have to buy two different buns.

We ended up using the Hillshire farm and Johnsonville, as you mentioned the smoked beef seems to cover all the bases. I wish my costco sold them. I buy them from the grocery store now in packs of 6. We charge 3.50 for them so it's worthwhile. I just like buying everything in bulk and getting that discount. My local costco only carrys chicken sausage and a jalapeno cheddar beef sausage.

My Restaurant Depot has started carrying Maxwell Street Polish for about $20 for 5 lbs. I have gotten very good reviews about them as I top them with grilled onions. Might be a little more impressive than some of the other brands. They are a more course ground sausage. I used to love those finely ground sausages until I found a 1/8 inch vein in one. Grossed me out so bad I quit eating them.

Yea, my customers love them. I wish I could find them in bulk, but no go. I get them at Walmart for $2.89 for the 6 pack. Grill some onions to put on them and people get addicted to em...... :) I think I am going to try the stadium brat or the beer brat they offer also.....

Why not talk to the grocery store manager and try to get a discount if you buy a case at a time? We did this with some items for our concession business, and it worked out great.

Vienna Beef has a very good Classic Polish Sausage and a Hot Classic Polish Sausage. They also have a premium brats. They have less fat than Hillshire or Johnsville. The cost s a little more also.

Do any of you use a poppy seed bun. I currently use a poppy seed bun;however, I can not find any where in town to buy them. I have to drive 45 miles to a larger town to get them. I could also drive a little over 100 miles and get them at Restaurant Depot. Do any of you have a suggestions for a vendor/soource?
