Not new, but every year I listen to We Three Kings by The Roches (sisters Maggie, Terre & Suzzy Roche). A collection of classic & modern carols in three part harmonies that only sisters (or brothers) can do. My favorite is their version of Winter Wonderland done in Brooklyn accents.

I've always been proud to say I'm all over the place musically - for Carlton Pierre: you say Sara Watkins was formerly of Nickel Creek - did they break up (or did she leave)? I saw them at what used to be called WXPN's Singer/Songwriter Festival and they were phenomenal! Richard Thompson headlined that...

As of a few days ago, for me it's Carolina Chocolate Drops.

I've been trying to copy some pictures on here, and where I never had a problem before, I'm having one now. Sorry. Please look them up - they are truly unique and very traditional.

Massive Attack is newly-acquired, though they've been around for over 20 years.

Lots of Tony Bennett, June Christy, and Jeanie Bryson (Dizzy Gillespie's daughter). As much Sinatra as we can.

And, as always, as much Cumbia as possible!

My wife and I give gifts to our service industry friends because she being Jahmaican likes the tradition of Boxing Day so we bought our plumber who saved us a few thousand dolars a cupla months ago by preventing a major repair when he noticed the very beginning of what could've been a disaster and nipped it in the bud, anyhow he and his dad are huge Frank Sinatra fans so we bought him the newly released Sinatra NY box set of 4 CDs and a DVD, Sinatra NY. While we were having lunch they immediately began to listen to it and it was better than I thought it would be, The Chairman in the 60s and 70s was still peaking and although he was never a jazz singer he was a master of space-phrasing-inflection and making a song his

OK, now this will be fun. I gave my 18yo daughter some CDs for Christmas... but I have no ear at all for the stuff that's coming out today. Really, the music industry has become so fragmented over the last 25 years, so decentralized, it's hard to find what's worthwhile... but also I've turned into my parents, and it all sounds the same to me.

What I did, I looked at a dozen "Best of 2009" lists and picked 5 from the lists:

Dirty Projectors Bitte Orca
Phoenix Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
The Thermals Now We Can See
St Vincent Actor
Bill Callahan Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle

And you know what? Some of it is not bad. Phoenix is really danceable. Bitte Orca is like "informed psychedelic"; after acid's novelty had worn off, but before it was revealed as a cheap parlor trick, before Altamont. St Vincent and Bill Callahan are pretty good, and The Thermals will take some getting used to.

The other day I watched the documentary "Desperate Man Blues" which describes the life of legendary 78 RPM record collector Joe Bussard. View Promo here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xI0T11s4VY4

In it he played a record called Bugle Call Rag by Red Allen and Billy Banks from the early 30's. It's fun to see the enthusiasm Joe has for his music and this particular track absolutely knocked me out. It's been #1 on my playlist for 2 days now:

i love finding new music!  i enjoy almost anything.  my recent CD is the Almighty Fischermen.  i have a MySpace full of band friends and am always getting friend requests from unsigned, excellent bands i would never find elsewise.  These guys are Greek and some of their lyrics can be a tad vulgar, but you can't get away from the big guitar they have.  i bought the CD directly from them, i don't know if it's available at the store.  here is a link to experience their melodious rapture.  my favorite is "Out of Beers." it's great music to clean house by.  lol

You would probably enjoy a group that I like very much called The Red Elvises.  You can probably locate them on YouTube, etc.  Thry call themselves "The best rock and roll band from Siberia."

"Home" by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. My youngest daughter found it on some site that suggests new music based on other music that she likes.

One reviewer calls it "the love song of the decade" (the decade just finished). It is too long at over 5 min to get any airplay, but my other daughter hears it on Sirius/XM.

If you like some of the old Cash/Carter, or Sonny/Cher (esp Caesar&Cleo) duets, or even certain Dead tunes, you should check them out.

thanks to you both!  i listened to the Megnetic Zeros and now it's Red Evises...but shouldn't that be "Red Elvi?"

LOVE new music...and old too.  yesterday when i was home being cold and broke i checked out some old time country music.  Hank Williams, Johnny Cash and Jim Reeves...no i'm not very good and yes it was partially alcohol induced...lol

There are tons of great duet "groups" out these.  One that has grabbed my ear recently is Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer.  Phenomenal duo.
Sadly, Dave Carter passed away tragically in '02 and Tracy has been recording solo and with another great singer and guitar player, Jim Henry.
There are some excellent vids of them on youtube.

"Never Forget You" by the Noisetts. It is sort of Motown meets punk, meets Nancy Sinatra. I had heard it on a local college station, but forgot to look it up. I then heard it in the movie "Leapyear" and did some research.  They are a British 3 person punk band, with the training to know how to add lots of backup to the studio recording. (3 violins for example). They have made it big in Europe, but not so much in the USA. Ellen's instincts to have them on her show makes me rethink her qualifications for the Idol gig.  You can find a bunch of videos on Youtube. The studio version is great (love that Porche and the Doc Martins), but if you dig, you can find some live versions done in clubs by just the 3 of them too.

If I could find it, I'd be playing "I ought to Know" by Jack Hardy. I seem to have misplaced the cd. My family hates it, so I don't play it when they are home, and my low end truck has no cd player.

We're blessed in Knoxville to have the likes of Ashley Capps who is one of tghe country's biggest and best music promoters.  www.acentertainment.com

He puts on Bonarroo and other festivals and has enrgized the music scene in Knoxville.  Things are happening here.

Coming up in March is a phenomenal festival called Big Ears and it is collection of musicians who are on the pulse of the music scene.  Quite a lineup, and you can check it out at www.bigearsfestival.com
