Earl of Sandwich

I think 2009 was one of the best years in a musical sense in some time.  I'm overwhelmed by the number of good albums that were released.

You are not kidding.......I'm getting old and out of it. I didn't even know of half the Grammy nominations last night.

Nothing wrong with that.

I'm listening to Leonard Bernstein's "Mass", conducted by Kristjan Jaarvi; Mozart's Requiem, with Cecelia Bartoli singing mezzo; and an old Pablo Jazz album from the '70s reissued on CD -- Ella Fitzgerald's "Fine and Mellow."

I've discovered 2 artists who are new to me, Harry Manx and Gina Sicilia.
Both of these are great and both have a number of great videos on youtube.
Harry is a great blues singer, does some wonderful covers of songs, writes his own music and also does some Indian music as well.  Plays some funky homemade instruments.  This guy is just awersome.

Gina's only 25 buy an incredible voice and some excellent song renditions.
Check 'em out.

Hey, Niagara there's a website ( I do not have access to it right now) where you can listen to every Grateful Dead concert they ever did.  It's quite amazing.  Some have better quality than others.

I've really gotten into a band called Balance Problems lately.  Nothing fancy here, and tend to be mellow but they have a sound I really like.

-You'll need to dub in the "www." due to the anti-spam parameters setup by the admin.

Kind of a fun band, and a favorite of mine is:
Antsy McClain and the Trailer Park Troubadours ( unhitched.com )
A true folk-a-billy  Americana band. Lots of fun stuff.

I also like:
Lavay Smith and her Hot Skillet Lickers -The Queen of classic jazz and blues ( lavaysmith.com )

Deryl Dodd is a good Texas country singer: ( deryldodd.com )

I rediscovered Chuck Maultsby from the '70s, you'll remember him for the song "Disco Sucks". Ol' Chuck Wagon and the Wheels are alive and well, in Tucson, AZ. Although they are now Chuck Wagon and the Wheelchairs".
( chuckmaultsby.net/ )

Cadillac Sky is a bunch of fine musicians, too. Blue Grass and such.
( cadillacsky.net/ )

Abney Park is a "Steampunk" Band. You just have to listen to it. It's almost a gypsy type of music.
(abneypark.com/ )

I've an eclectic sense of music. I like most kinds, but rap. Rap is simply limericks with background noise. (sorry, but that's my humble opinion).

Hey Lost,

nice to hear from a music lover with electic tastes.  The only other dislike I have in addition to rap is opera.

Some people you might like, and maybe already know of, with similar styles to who you mentioned would be  Pokey LaFarge, Janiva Magness, Old Crow Mwdicine Show, to name just a few.  Danny Okeefe, who lives in Seattle is probably my second favorite singer songwriter.

Yes, I do indeed like Old Crow Medicine Show.
The only opera I like is spelled 'Opry' as in Grand Ol' !!
I must say though, the Four Tenors were pretty good. I just couldn't listen to a lot of it.

I enjoy western music, too.  Wylie and the Wild West, Sons of Oregon, etc.

Really like Asleep at the Wheel and Junior Brown.

bands always "friend request" me on Myspace.  it's a weekly surprise to go see!  the really fun part is that i have enough bands that they come find me and it's amazing how much great unsigned music of every klind is out there.  look through the friend list on any of the bands there and you can find some pretty wild stuff

...a recent favorite...

I've seen Dave Alvin several times, with and without The Guilty Women, and he is quite mesmerizing I must say.
I've seen Dave Rawlings as well, and I have not been as impressed with this new album like many others have.

Bushie,  you live in music heaven in Texas.  Just when I think about the number of singer/songwriters from Tennessee I'm overwhelmed by the number of people from Texas.

I can't disagree with you, Carlton.  Austin is a magical place.

Another one I forgot to mention:

I and Love and You by the Avett Brothers.

I recently acquired the ten-disc "Golden Age of Country" box set from Time-Life. It contains roughly 150 country classics, primarily from the 1940s and '50s, and there's many long-time favorites of mine among them. Lots of useless stuff gets sold on infomercials, but this purchase was definitely worth the money.

Another "new" band I've come across recently that  I like a lot, and darned if they ain't from Texas as well ( I think they started while at UT) is Midlake.  Kind of a mellow band with good harmonies I really like them a lot.

I just emailed my best friend who knows just about everything there is to know about music, and I inquired about Midlake.  I've never heard of them, but he probably has.  Thanks.

Carlton, since you know Texas music, I hope you own the Robert Earl Keen tribute, Undone.  Certainly not "new", since it came out last year, but it is wonderful in its own right, and it epitomizes Central Texas music.

Bushie,  Midlake is not what you think of as a Texas sound.  It's an excellent group though and you'll like them if you give them a listen.

Shawn Phillips, was one f my fave singer/songwriters from the 70's who also did not have a classic Texas sound.  When he was asked why he did not play roots music he replied, "Because there's a whole tree above the ground."

Wow,  in that case I may have to at least give it a listen to find out what makes it so unique.
