A friend recently loaned me a copy of Monsters of Folk.  The more I listen, the more awesome I think it is.

Maybe I'll give them another shot.  I heard some of it, butonly once.

I saw Robt Earl Keen at the Ryman over the weekend.  He put on a good show and did a collection of songs from the earfly days tol recent stuff.

Neil Young & Bert Jansch playing there June 1 & 2.

They may not be suited to everyone's taste, but like I said, the more I listened, the better I liked.

Neil Young resides on Mt. Olympus, as far as I'm concerned...

I agree with you Bushie.  I'd love to see them both but not at $100 a ticket.  Oh, and as far as Mt Olympus, Neil lives in a neighborhood, and Bert Jansch is his neighbor there.  I like the analogy, Bushie.

I understand Mary Gauthier has a new album out soon.  Are you familiar with her?

Gill Landry, now a member of Old crow Medicine Show, also has a solo album coming out that I am really looking forward to hearing.  His first album was my album of the year in 2008.

I just bought the new Peter Wolf album, Midnight Reflections.  Peter was a member of the J Geils Band, lead singer.  This new album is all original songs which he wrote or co-wrote and tends to have a country flavor with.  He does duets with Shelby Lynne, Merle Haggard, and a few others.
Midnight Reflections, checkit out.

I've been really enjoying The Cricket's Orchestra by Meaghan Smith. It's from 2008, but it puts me in mind of songs from Tin Pan Alley.

Just downloaded Jeff Beck's Emotion and Commotion. Beck keeps getting better and better. This is a very tasty set of recordings with some guest singers (Joss Stone sings 'I put a spell on you', the old Screaming J-Hawkins tune).

I just picked up a couple of Adam and The Ants CDs from the 80's.  It's fun music!

Andrea, aren't you about 25 years late for Adam and the Ants.  I remember an interview with him where he said he could write a song in less than 10 minutes.

Yah carlton pierre - it's just a fun blast from the past and makes good workout music!  I still like many 80's bands.

I've not heard Emotion & Commotion, but my hunch is the song you're referring to is one of Beck's trademark instrumentals that just evoke tears and sadness.  he's one of the best at that.

Knoxville has a really great music scene.  We are blessed with a plethora of venues and festivals, etc.  Music of all types.  Last night I went to a monthly concert series we have called Tennessee Shines.  www.tennesseeshines.com

Concert is always hosted by Jim Lauderdale and last night he played 2 songs, and next month he is featured as he has a wonderful new album coming out in about 2 weeks.
First group was an interesting blend of banjo, drums, guitar, bass, and a guy who played everything from trumpet, to french horn, to recorder, to even playing a saw with a violin bow.  They were called Frontier Ruckus.
Next, a singer songwriter with an interesting voice named Matt Urmy.  Followed by my favorite, Mary Gauthier.  Her new album, The Foundling, is amazing.  It'll be out in 2 weeks.
2nd half of the show was a duo called Paleface.  A guy onacoustic guitar and his girlfriend who sang and played drums.  Last act was rockabilly greats Southern Culture on the Skids.
A great show and a fun evening.

I've been exploring the world of acapella choruses.  Ben Folds just put out an album of college a capella groups but there are lots of these that do everything from barbershop style to pop music to church music.  I love hearing how all the groups make the bass and drum sounds.,

I got this from the library and didn't know how wondefful it was til I got home.  4 cd set titles "Love Is The Song We Sing"- Sanfrancisco Nuggets  1965-1970.  Tons of great music some of which has not been played before and it's more like an encyclopedia.  Lots of great photos, song by song descriptions, etc.  I wish I owned it.
Music is mostly psychadelic, Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger service, but also Sons of Champlin,Moby Grape, Youngbloods, and a host of others.

O.K., you said recently acquired not recently recorded.  I just acquired the CD Bing Crosby - The Definitive Collection.  While I enjoyed it, it did remind me of something I once read.  It was that Bing Crosby was the world's best selling singer, but he mostly retired when Frank Sinatra hit it big with his more natural style of singing.

When we think of Bing Crosby we think of White Christmas or a sort of Perry Como easy style of singing.  It's not easy singing, he's all over the place.  It's not bad, it does show of his ability, but it sounds a little strange by modern standards.

Beauty is in the eyes (or ears) of the beholder.  Some like crooners, some like country, some like rap, some love drums (moi).  We all like something different and I love it all (well, most of it).

I'm always on the watch for new music to discover.   This is a great thread.

I think it certainly enhances one's experience if you get to see performers perform live.  It does for me.  Bushie, looks like an outstanding up and coming duo.

"Home" by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. My youngest daughter found it on some site that suggests new music based on other music that she likes.

One reviewer calls it "the love song of the decade" (the decade just finished). It is too long at over 5 min to get any airplay, but my other daughter hears it on Sirius/XM.

If you like some of the old Cash/Carter, or Sonny/Cher (esp Caesar&Cleo) duets, or even certain Dead tunes, you should check them out.

Still not much airplay for "Home" (as I've said......it is too long), but another of their songs is doing well as the soundtrack for the new Ford Fiesta ads.  Update.....and now "Home" is being used for the new Palm ad.

I've been interested in new music lately and have come across 2 groups you might want to check out.  Bushie, I think you especially might like a guy named Rana Santacruz.  Album is "Chicavasco" named after a small town in South America which he likes.  He's Mexican, plays the accordian and moved to NYC a few years ago and has blended his musical influences into an interesting sound a little hard to describe, but good to listen to.
The other group is one from England, called The Treetop Flyers.  They're heavily influenced by Stephen Stills, named themselves after one of his songs.  Kind of a mellow rock group.  Check'em out.

I saw a wonderful country band, almost a honky-tonk, country from the 50's sound, this past weekend at the Biscuit festival in Knoxville..  They were called Black Bottom Biscuits, they have 3 -4 albums out, hail from Columbia, SC.  All their songs were original and very clever.  I really liked them.

www.blackbottombiscuits.com

Albums are available on iTunes

Jeff Beck's version of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow':

http://www.youtube.com/wa...s4&feature=related

From the CD. I'll be seeing him perform it live Friday night in Rochester..Its a difficult song to do live because it relies in one section of sustained plucked false harmonics...miss the the harmonic and a good piece of the song is in jeopardy...can't wait to see if he pulls it off..
