My latest obsession is a band called Hypnogaja. Their new album (Truth Decay) came out a couple of weeks ago, and it's better than the last one, which I would not have imagined. Kind of hard rock, kind of mainstream, kind of melodic...hard to pin down. Everything else is not really newly acquired, so I'll skip it. Oh, wait! I did finally find my copy of Marillion - Misplaced Childhood. So while it's not technically newly acquired it's newly found after being missing for over two years. That counts, right?

jeepguy They still sell cd's? Get with it, they still sell LPs, in fact the last 2-3 years has seen a spike in LP sales, new and used while CD sales are declining. A CD or an LP on a good system sound better than a MP3, I Pod or I Tune because of their compression factor distoring the music especially the highs and lows

I'm listening to Slim Bryant and his Wildcats, a New England-based country music group from the 1930s and 1940s. This set of 2-CDs (vol.1 & vol. 2) was produced in Britain, and consists of cuts from radio transcriptions and air checks during the late 1940s. Slim Bryant, as of this writing, is still alive and in his mid-90s. Interesting are the instruments used, some of which are not heard today; mainly the cuts consist of an accordion, which is used as the lead instrument, backed with guitar and bass, and occasionally a fiddle. Smooth vocals, too. If they had used different instruments, they could have been mistaken for pop singers of the day.

I've been listening to The Bran Flakes' "Stumble Out of Bed," a track that heavily samples Dolly Parton's "9 to 5." I really like this. The last CD I bought was Neko Case's new album, "Middle Cyclone." It's great. I love her voice.

And have collected vinyl since i was a kid. Howvere, you can now set a prefernce in an IPOD to record things as .wav files which will be virtually the same as a cd. Not that cds sound all that great in fact. I teach sound and what is stunning is how many of my students have never heard a cd or a great album and only listen to MP3s

It is also stunning how many kids have grown up eating Domino's and other chain pizzas and have no idea what good pizza is. Unless someone takes them in hand and teaches them otherwise they will follow the pack and listen to and eat crap their entire lives.

My father was a former pro trumpet player in L A 's Central Avenue corridor pre and post WW2 but left that behind to obtain a "regular gig" when he wed my mother although he would play on ocassion on the weekends, at house parties, weddings birthdays etc the rest of his life. In 1966 for my 16th birthday he took me to see Miles Davis play with some then young cats making some noise, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Tony Williams and Wayne Shorter They played material from E S P and Miles Smiles wow, after this period Miles went funky-rockish-fusion with Bitches Brew, On the Corner, Jack Johnson Tribute and IMO began losing his chops although I kinda liked his final album the Doo Bop. Miles, mid-1950s to mid-60s recordings with Cannonball, Coltrane, Bill Evans, Phillie Joe Jones etc are masterpieces

Recently I purchased, on CD, a number of albums that I had on 8-track cartridges ( remember those? ) back in the 1970s, and that I hadn't heard in almost thirty years. I'm really glad that I decided to do this, as I have rediscovered some favorite songs from my misspent youth: Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts and Tangled Up In Blue ( both Bob Dylan ), Rock Around the Symbol and Broken-Down Man ( both Jo Jo Gunne ), Race Among the Ruins ( Gordon Lightfoot ), Dance Hall Girl and Stoney River ( both Mason Proffit ), Golden Country and Let Me Ride ( both R.E.O. Speedwagon ), Fallin' In Love and Believe Me ( both Souther-Hillman-Furay Band ), Diamonds and Rust ( Joan Baez ), I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band ( Moody Blues ), and Durham Town ( Roger Whittaker. ) Also a classic from the mid '80s, Vive Le Rock by Adam Ant. Great, great stuff.

I am a sound engineer and a professor of sound recording. While I agree that MP3s and the like sound absolutely dreadful and are not very musical, an IPOD will allow you to set a preference and record from any source ( cd, etc) as .wav files. These are absolutely identical to the original cd recording and suffer no compression degradation. They do take up lots more space on an IPOD but you get cd quality. Not the same as analog but the equivalent of any digital format. jonjax71 jeepguy They still sell cd's? Haven't bought any CDs in a while, but I can't stop listening to The Isley Brother's cover of Summer Breeze. It's so freaking great.

Knoxville is fast becoming a music haven. Every month we have a concert called Tennessee Shines and hosted by Jim Lauderdale. Couple of nights ago I saw Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women, Sara Watkins ( formerly of Nickel Creek), Tyler Ramsey ( a phenomenal guitarist and songwriter with a voice like Neil Young, and also in the group Band of Horses),and Samantha Crain a rising artist quickly getting attention.
