What outside force has kept you from going out for a meal. Fri, 11/5/10 6:40 PM (permalink)
I just tried to leave my store for my lunch hour.  I couldn't get out on to the main boulevard because the cars were backed up and no one would let me in.

That's when I noticed the helicopters.

I can't buy my lunch because of a bomb threat.

No salad today.

Well, I was unable to go anywhere for lunch today because of birds. Pheasants, I believe they are called. And that's the trouble will allowing illegal immigrants to be sneaked into the country, especially ones from China, such as the ringnecked pheasants that some judge from Oregon slipped in in the 19th century.

There I was, stuck eating a Kosher salami and Swiss on rye with Batampte mustard, when what I really wanted was a Happy Meal.

Illegal immegrant birds!  You should shoot them!

So what are you having for dinner?

Also, is your Kosher salami sliced off of the (what is that thing called.. a chub?)  or deli sliced at the grocery store.

Leaving now to go look up Batampte.  Gadempte I know, Batampte I don't.

I missed out on tacos today because Churchill Downs had the Breeders Cup. I was forced to eat 2 gas station hot dogs.

Gee, and I'm sitting here thinking about a half dozen or so Egyptian Monitor lizards surrounding the front and back yard doors steps with a few patrolling the yard in the case of a window breakout. Jaws that can crush bone I can understand as a reason to abstain from a burger, fries, and a toy. But Chinese Pheasants? Are you sure you're not sequestering yourself from Chinese Peasants Michael?

All the pheasants in North America came originally from China. So, no, I'm not sequestering myself in any way.

Tasty!  Why didn't I know that?  The logo looks quite familiar.

Snow. I have gone to places where the snow or dumpsters take the few available handicapped spots.

I'd like a salami sandwich too, please. At this hour I'd like anything I don't have to cook!

Last night I missed out on dinner because the lines at the concession stand were too long (I forgot it was dollar beer/dollar dog night at the arena), and once I was on the clock there is no such thing as a break until after the hockey game.  I managed some M&Ms, but it wasn't the same as the pizza and bread sticks I really wanted.

There is still a Restaurant on Washington Blvd. in a small shopping center right on the north side at Pacific Ave. that made a fantastic Ceasar years ago...at least it was there last year, has outdoor seating, can't remember the name!

I'm not a fan of pheasant under glass. I like them , I like them grilled, I like them smoked and I liked them fried. But I especially like them baked in a cream sauce.

Parking in that neighborhood is expensive and almost impossible to find.

We go to Nichols for salads.  It's in the Von's --  Sav-On Shopping Center which is now the Pavillons --  CVS Shopping Center.  They make their own salad dressings (and soups) which are really quite good.

Remember the Marina del Rey Golf Course?  I live on top of it behind the hospital and Marina Toyota just east of Lincoln.

My lunches occur when I'm at work which takes place in Sherman Oaks, otherwise known as The Valley.   Yesterday I was just going to go to the neighborhood salad bar in the grocery store.  OH!  I should be there now!

Illegal immigrant birds!  You should shoot them!

So what are you having for dinner?

Also, is your Kosher salami sliced off of the (what is that thing called.. a chub?)  or deli sliced at the grocery store.

Leaving now to go look up Batampte.  Gadempte I know, Batampte I don't.

I would shoot them, if they were cockbirds. But hens are illegal to shoot.

My dinner tonight is going to be a leftover half of a salami sandwich. Oh, and I buy whole salamis and slice as I go.

Batampte means tasty, and it's the brand name of a mustard.

Herr Hoffman, batampte is spelled Ba-Tempte and it's a brand of Kosher Deli Products produced in Brooklyn, NY. (I'll bet that neighborhood smells great!). They're more famous for their line of Pickles than their mustard. They make many different varieties of pickles and only one Mustard product. They also make Horseradish, Sauerkraut, Pickled Peppers & Tomatoes. Their products are world-class as you know

MAR 52 - You can find them in speciality grocery stores and deli's. They're in the refrigerated sections.

Mar52, from posts on other food sites, it appears Ba-Tampte pickles and mustard are available in the greater Los Angeles area. Likely sources are kosher food markets. The mustard formula seems to be exclusive to Ba-Tampte. It is a spicy brown mustard and complements corned beef, pastrami, kosher salami and bolonga, hot dogs, and other meats seasoned with garlic.

I sent an email to Ba-Tampte last night asking them where you could find their products in the LA area. Should have a reply early next week & I'll post it. Their pickles WILL taste different than any other you've had. They use no artificial preservatives in the brining process.

Ess gezunterhait! (Translation, "eat in good health")

Batampte mustard is usually found on the shelf with the other mustards, not in the refrigerated cases. By the way, I've been buying it for more than 30 years. Oh, and I don't care much for their other products.

Mr.Hoffman-what type of Kosher salami do you buy? I cant seem to find a decent slicing chub anywhere...

What I have right now is just plain old Hebrew National. I bought a six-pound salami. I used to like Best, but Sara Lee shut down Best, so that's no longer available. A dry salami I like, but can't find very often is Able & Hyman.

By "Done" do you mean the Liquid was cloudy? They tend to get that way because I don't think they put any additives or chemical perservatives in the brine.  The Half Sours tend to be the cloudiest. They should also be refrigerated.
