If you are a big fan on TV westerns and have it available a friend told me the Encore Western channel has all the old favorites.

What show did Andy Devine play Jingles on?

It was Wild Bill Hickok, which starred Guy Madison in the title role.

I recall hearing that Andy Devine got that funny raspy voice from bouncing on a bed with a popsicle stick in his mouth, which promptly stuck in his throat, damaging his vocal cords. Anyone else recall that?

It could be true CTF-----I made a game saving tackle, we lost by 3 TDs
so it didn't make any difference, but in the process took a cleat to the larynx.
Couldn't talk for a few days without pain and then had a raspy voice.  Not
nearly as bad as Devine's but raspy non the less.

Could no longer sing soprano in the choir, also.

The Avengers  - the early ones with Diana Rigg

I hope you mean the early Diana Rigg ones; she was one of the later assistants for John Steed. Heard that she quit when she found out that even the camera operators were getting paid more than she was.

Diana Rigg was the first female costar on The Avengers appearing in 51 episodes between 1965 and 1968:

Diana Rigg went on to be knighted or something.  She now has a title of
LADY or DAME or something.  All I can say is that as a young man watching her in her skin tight outfits she was always a dame playing a lady. and Steed never seemed to notice.  My screen would be steamed
up and Steed would be walking around with his bowler and cane and not paying her any attention.

Just to be accurate, Ms. Rigg was the 2nd of Steed's partners...the first was Honor Blackman.

And she was also a tempting Pussy Galore vs. James Bond ----

But, I still take Diana Rigg, she had a certain something, or many things,  that appealed to me---and probably a few other discriminating GENTLEMEN.

Yes indeed to me there was only one female costar on The Avengers and it was Diana Rigg.

I remember Soap. It was really funny and somewhat daring for the time. A gay primary character.

Monday Night Football with Gifford, Kosel and Danny Dan was a masterpiece----after that it was just another NFL game.

I certainly remember Soap, it was one of my favorites. Wasn't Billy Crystal  the gay character ?
I would like to see some reruns to see if I still like it. Unfortunately I find that if I revisit some of these shows I enjoyed from years past I found myself saying "why did I like this show so much?" Good example "The Jeffersons"

John Steed's first partner was Dr. David Keel (Keel's wife was murdered, and Steed helped him find the killers, hence the name of the series). He was followed by Dr. Martin King, Venus Smith, and, most famously, Cathy Gale (played by Honor Blackman; she and Patrick MacNee released a hit novelty record called "Kinky Boots"). When Honor Blackman left to co-star in Goldfinger, the story is that the producers were looking for a partner who would appeal to males, or, in adspeak, "m-appeal". Hence the name of the character.

My major problem with the Jeffersons (note I say, "major", not "only" is that they insisted on explaining all their jokes to the audience. If you don't recall this, just watch any rerun. Typical dialogue:
George: Do you have any cash, Weezy? I'm a little short!
Louise: Yes, you are (laughter)! And I don't mean cash (more laughter)! I mean height (now the people who didn't get it the first two times laugh)!

One show that I liked when it first came out, and then, when I saw the video, I winced at how bad it was: When Things Were Rotten. And I was in my 20's when it was first on, so I don't have "I was just a kid" as an excuse.

Sitting in the hot tub with 2 other elder gentlemen I brought up this topic----two good responses showed what high class people I hang out with----

Bat Man was one guys favorite----loved it and the great cast of characters---Burgess Meredith, Cesar Romero, The Riddler (forgot his name---great impressionist), Cat Woman or whoever-----etc, etc.

And the other Old Fart never missed an edition of ____Get Smart.
I didn't know that.  Ok Chief lets get under the cone and talk this over.
99 please hand me my shoe it might be an important call.

Rabkin, when I put the question to my partner, 'Deadwood' was one of her two as well.  I watched most of the whole series with her this summer and I have to say it's not what I thought it was going to be.  It was very engrossing.  Also, I have decided that I think 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' is a better show than 'Seinfeld' was.

The best show you're not watching on TV right now is 'Community.'  And when 'Parks and Recreation' comes back in January, there will be two.

now y'all had me interested in looking up dates on the Avengers:  The series ran from 1961-1969

Honor Blackman (Cathy Gale)  1962-64
Diana Rigg (Emma Peel) 1965-68
Linda Thornton (Tara King)  1968-69

I don't remember Honor Blackman, but after Diana Rigg left the show, it just wasn't as good.

Much as I do so adore The Sopranos (check out the screen name, yo), I just have never seen a (massive) set of characters, a whole world so incisively drawn, so inexorably etched as those and that of Deadwood (again, bearing in mind that I've still yet to view most discerning television fans' all-time favorite series, The Wire).

I've seen a bit of Parks and Recreation, and I like what I saw.  About Community I'm mildly curious, but I have to say I'm very anxious to purchase and get to watchin' Justified when it comes out on DVD the first of the year.

Magnum PI would have been okay except for those shorts that he wore.  They negated anything redeeming.

There was a nice little meta-joke in an early Emma Peel episode: Steed is looking over Christmas cards from lady friends and sees one from Mrs. Gale - he muses "What can she be doing in Fort Knox?"
