Nice work Rabkin, excellent list.

I've never seen Rome, but am familiar with all the other shows save for a season here and there of a few of them.

The Sopranos would probably top my best of list. I haven't watched it since it went off the air but certain memorable scenes will still occasionally randomly pop into my head and I think of how great the show was.

Freaks and Geeks is another favorite, the burnout characters in it were so spot on and reminded me of people I went to school with.

Out of the two AMC powerhouses I think I prefer Breaking Bad to Mad Men. I recently finished season two, which contained some of the most intense riveting TV I've ever seen.

I'm a big Curb Your Enthusiasm fan too. My favorite thing about the show is how angry the main characters can get and how it seems that they're constantly shouting at each other. I love Cheryl Hines and Susie Essman is a riot.

As far as Community goes, I'm a regular viewer but I don't think it's a great show. I guess it's the characters. I can't stand Ken Jeong. Danny Pudi is seriously overrated IMO. The plots are hit or miss too. Something keeps me watching. Alison Brie maybe.

I'd throw Seinfeld and the Honeymooners on my list too. Arrested Development was great. Six Feet Under maybe. And I still love me some Saved by the Bell.

And I also have never seen The Wire, but I plan to Netflix it soon.

CTF----Saw Redd Foxx as a stand up comedian long before Sanford and Son.
Brer Foxx was pretty rauchy------But as Sanford he was terrific, even with a bad heart.

I'm a fan of Community (and Alison Brie) as well, although it seems like it's changed a fair amount this year.  Some of the episodes have been rather bizarre.

I like the entire current block of NBC's Thursday night comedies, especially '30 Rock' (though I haven't watched 'SNL' in ages) - they're all a good fit. They briefly ran some thing set in a dating service agency, with an easily-amused laugh track - I couldn't sit through a minute of it.
Glad to hear 'Parks and Recreation' is coming back; wonder how it will affect the schedule...

I thought '30 Rock' was fairly weak last season and I'm delighted that they seem to be mounting a resurgence; there have been three or four so far this year that have just been hilarious.  My understanding that 'Parks and Rec' will take 'Outsourced's spot but I'm not positive about the order.  'Community' is just riffing on TV and movie tropes, but they do it horribly well, i.e. the paintball episode from last season and the bottle episode and the conspiracy episode that was just on.  Those were friggin' brilliant, and I find myself wishing that 'Troy and Abed in the Morning' was actually a show.

Speaking to a friend over the Thanksgiving weekend and he said "Get Smart" and "Gilligan's Island" were the two best of all time---
I countered with "Bonanza" he threw in "Gunsmoke" and he closed off the conversation with "The Gong Show"  ----  now you know how the older guys spend their weekends.

The paintball war episode was my favorite by far on that show.  I do like Community but of the current 30 min sitcoms, Modern Family and the Big Bang Theory are at the top of my list.  Though I don't think either one makes the list of all time top shows.

Big Bang Theory is a favorite of mine. Of course, I used to BE one of those guys (well, a cross between Sheldon and Tom Collins from "Rent". Luckily, some of those early 80's Lower East Side chicks confused my mild autism for cool).

How'd you old timers get this far without mentioning Red Skelton. Good wholesome comedy.
Probably because of puberty I was glued to the TV when "I Dream of Jeannie" and "Bewitched" were on.
SNL with the original cast Dan Akroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase , Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman, Gilda Radner, George Coe, and Michael O'Donoghue was awesome!

Yes. In the very beginning.
"One of the original cast members on the first three episodes of "Saturday Night Live" (1975) in 1975. After that, he made several more uncredited appearances on the show during the first season, including the prison warden in the classic Lifer Follies sketch."

Thanks!  Guess I'm losing my memory.  Now I'm too old to stay up to watch what they've done with SNL.

You're not missing anything by not watching SNL. What used to be a "must-see" series for me is now so bad that it's almost unwatchable; the current cast is mediocre at best and the writing is simply abominable. NBC really needs to give Lorne Michaels and Co. the boot and get some people in there who know what they're doing.

Chris----I see you like all that high brow stuff !  me too.

When SNL started I was too old to stay up that late.  That was an impressive list of stars that got a start or a leg up on that show.

318's #1 is The Andy Griffith Show---is that the one where he is a lawyer with a lot of gray hair?  Or the one with the young boy with the funny name (what ever happened to him, I wonder) also a nutty deputy?

I had an appointment with a famous (really) surgeon at his home.  He was a little late getting home and said he and I would have to watch Perry Mason and have a martini before we discussed his new house---
He had to unwind before he could concentrate.  He never missed Perry and Della.  After 2 martinis each neither of us could concentrate so I went home.

Opie ws the little boy. Ron Howard, who played Opie, is a well esstablished director. Actually, he is one of the few child stars that turned out OK.

You know how nice Red Skelton seemed on the screen? Well, I met the guy in person (walking down the street in a music store area). He was every bit as nice in person; even put on an impromptu performance for the people who happened to be there at the time.

I suppose MASH was my favorite.  I used to schedule college classes around reruns.

Life would not have been the same without DALLAS, though.  From college through early years of marriage, my Friday nights were planned to watch Dallas.  When the show ended its run, I kind of lost interest in watching TV.

Perhaps a little sick, but true...

I used to catch 'I Married Joan' on the old Christian Broadcasting Network late on weekend nights when I got home from babysitting.  It was pretty cute.

Nancy-----I Married Joan can not be considered as the greatest TV show of all time.  Christian Broadcasting, or otherwise.  Is that your final answer.  Yes Regis that's my final answer.

I'll throw in another Brit product that may or may not have been mentioned in the previous page: Keeping Up Appearances.  Patricia Routledge's Hyacinth is one of my favorite sitcom characters of all time.
